The Courier (運び屋, Hakobiya) is one of the main characters in the anime series Akudama Drive. A highly skilled and stoic criminal, he is known for his exceptional delivery capabilities and combat expertise. Despite his minimal speech and detached attitude, Courier becomes a key figure in the central heist and later plays a pivotal role in protecting the children and supporting the Swindler’s evolving mission. Appearance in Anime

Courier is a tall, fair-skinned man with a lean build. He has neck-length purple hair, with his bangs swept to the right side of his face, partially obscuring one eye. His purple eyes typically carry a serious or nonchalant expression, reflecting his reserved and emotionally detached personality. He rarely displays strong emotions, which adds to his calm and enigmatic presence.

His attire consists of a gray hoodie worn beneath a black biker jacket, paired with black biker jeans and black boots with gray soles giving him a rugged, utilitarian appearance suited to his role as a delivery specialist. He wears light gray earrings and carries a small light gray pouch strapped to his leg for practical use. Notably, his right arm appears to be robotic, suggesting cybernetic enhancement that likely aids his precision and combat efficiency.

Personality

Courier is a highly reserved individual known for his stoic and professional nature. He rarely engages in conversation and is considered a man of few words, speaking only when necessary and choosing his statements carefully to match the situation. His quiet, calculated presence contributes to his intimidating reputation and reinforces his reliability as a skilled Akudama.

He maintains a strict professional distance from others, treating interactions purely as part of the job. Courier prefers solitude and avoids forming emotional connections, often seen working independently and keeping to himself. One of his most consistent habits is smoking in silence, further emphasizing his preference for being alone.

Despite his antisocial tendencies, Courier holds a clear sense of pride and confidence in his work. He takes his assignments seriously, executing them with precision and commitment. While he rarely shows emotion, his actions reveal a deeper loyalty and sense of responsibility particularly later in the series, as he chooses to protect the children and support Swindler’s efforts without hesitation

Background

Courier works as an underground transporter, taking on delivery jobs in exchange for payment. His tasks frequently involve the transport of illicit and contraband items, such as weapons, explosives, and drugs, often for clients associated with criminal organizations. Because of his involvement in these high-risk operations, he is considered a wanted criminal by the Kansai government, earning him his classification as an Akudama.

Over time, it is implied that Courier has been involved in this line of work since a very young age. In a flashback, it is revealed that he was once taken in by an older woman who may have served as a caretaker or guardian. However, their time together ended in tragedy when a mysterious man broke into their residence, and the woman was presumably killed. During the incident, Courier attempted to defend her, resulting in a serious injury that caused the loss of his right hand. This moment is believed to be the origin of his robotic arm, which now enhances his physical capabilities.

The man responsible for the incident was seen riding the same motorcycle that Courier would later use as his signature vehicle implying that he either inherited or reclaimed it as part of his path forward. This traumatic event likely shaped Courier’s isolated personality and unwavering focus on work, setting him on the path to becoming one of Kansai’s most efficient and notorious delivery specialists.

Abilities and Equipment

Courier is best known for his exceptional driving abilities and unmatched precision as a transporter. His true strength lies in the use of his heavily modified motorcycle, which is equipped with advanced technology and weaponry. The bike features a concentrated beam laser capable of piercing reinforced armor and even cutting an entire train in half, showcasing its destructive power. Additionally, it is equipped with grappling hooks that allow him to scale buildings and navigate complex terrain urban or mountainous with remarkable ease. With his masterful driving skills and the capabilities of his vehicle, Courier can arrive at nearly any destination with speed and efficiency.

In combat, Courier primarily relies on ranged weaponry. He carries a futuristic revolver with a barrel shroud concealed in his jacket, which he uses with great precision. Although he can defend himself in close quarters, he generally avoids direct confrontation, preferring to fight from a distance. He is agile enough to evade attacks from skilled opponents such as the Execution Division Apprentice, but he struggles against more powerful enemies like the Execution Division Master, indicating that while capable, hand-to-hand combat is not his strongest suit.

Courier’s left arm is a full metal prosthetic, which grants him enhanced strength and durability in close combat. This arm enables him to block heavy blows and even withstand attacks from energy weapons that would otherwise cause severe harm. In the final episode, he uses the prosthetic to manually aim and fire his damaged bike’s laser cannon, successfully landing a decisive blow, though the effort causes the arm to break.

More than any physical ability, Courier’s defining trait is his unwavering sense of duty. He is intensely committed to his work and refuses to abandon a mission once it has been accepted. Even when faced with overwhelming danger, he pushes forward without hesitation. Under the influence of the Decontamination Zone, he recalls having this mindset since childhood. His immense willpower and work ethic have earned him a reputation as one of the most reliable Akudama someone who, by his own assertion, has never failed a job.

Legacy

Courier’s final act solidifies his transformation from a detached professional into a selfless protector. As the Shinkansen was destroyed by the Executioners during its entry into Kansai, Courier and Swindler both injured in the attack hid beneath the rubble along with Brother and Sister. When a scanning drone approached, Swindler shielded Courier by pinning him down and used the moment to convince him to take on one last job. She gave him the ¥500 coin, claiming it had the power to “change everything.” Though initially reluctant, Courier accepted the coin and her plea, agreeing to transport the children safely to Shikoku.

Leaving Swindler behind to distract the Executioners, Courier led the children out of Kansai, pursued relentlessly. At one point, they were intercepted at a police checkpoint, but Courier fought back and escaped with the children, showing a rare sense of urgency and resolve far beyond professional obligation. With drones still in pursuit, he continued the journey toward Shikoku, sustaining further injuries along the way.

Near their destination, realizing that he could no longer go on, Courier ordered the children to continue without him. Before they parted ways, he gave Brother the ¥500 coin, honoring Swindler’s belief in its symbolic power and passing on her legacy. Staying behind, Courier made a final stand against the drone, which initially proved too strong to overcome. However, thanks to the Hacker’s posthumous “Gift of the Afterlife,” the power across Kansai and the drone was shut down. In that brief window, Courier used the last of his strength, and his prosthetic arm, to deliver a successful shot. Fatally wounded, he died with a smile, knowing that he had completed his final delivery and ensured the children’s escape.
