Nagisa Momoe

Nagisa Momoe (百江なぎさ, Momoe Nagisa) is a magical girl introduced in Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica: The Rebellion Story. Initially appearing as a supporting character, she is later revealed to be the human form of the witch Charlotte, who debuted in the original anime series. In The Rebellion Story, Nagisa plays a crucial role in assisting Homura Akemi and Mami Tomoe during their investigation into the nature of the false Mitakihara world, while gradually revealing her own mysterious origins and motives.

Appearance

Nagisa Momoe is a petite girl with long, wavy white hair that extends to her knees. Her hair is styled into two small pigtails, secured with orange ruffled bands. She has bright, dual-toned eyes that blend shades of orange and yellow, giving her a lively and whimsical expression.

In her civilian attire, Nagisa wears a pink sailor-style dress adorned with polka dots, featuring a white collar and cuffs with brown trim. The sleeves are short and puffy, layered over long brown undersleeves. A brown bow sits at the center of her collar, and the hem of her dress is accented with a brown stripe and delicate white ruffles. The inside flap of her sailor collar is wine red, trimmed with white lace and another brown stripe. She completes the outfit with wine-colored tights and brown shoes topped with pink bows, adding to her youthful and slightly eccentric aesthetic.

As a magical girl, Nagisa dons an outfit that reflects her playful and confectionery-themed design. She wears a brown hat shaped like cat ears, with strings ending in fluffy pom-poms. Around her neck is a fuzzy choker, and she sports brown suspenders adorned with two small red bows. These suspenders are connected to a jellyfish-like skirt with a candy-shaped button in the center, which houses her lilac-colored Soul Gem.

Her top consists of a short brown shirt worn beneath a salmon-colored cape jacket, trimmed with white fur and fastened with two red buttons. She also wears brown polka-dotted tights and orange flats, completing a whimsical ensemble that emphasizes both her innocence and her connection to sweets reflecting her witch form, Charlotte.

Personality

Nagisa Momoe is characterized by her cheerful and whimsical personality. Often serving as the comic relief within the group, she displays a playful, childlike nature and a tendency toward lightheartedness. Despite her youthful behavior, Nagisa is more perceptive and thoughtful than she initially appears, occasionally offering insights that suggest a deeper understanding of the situations around her.

She tends to speak in an eloquent and formal manner, which contrasts amusingly with her otherwise scattered and impulsive behavior. In her transformed state as Bebe, Nagisa becomes even more exuberant and animated, frequently jumping around and showing exaggerated emotional reactions. Notably, she panics at the mere suggestion of turning into cheese, a humorous nod to her connection with the witch Charlotte.

Both as Nagisa and Bebe, she is energetic, talkative, and somewhat ditzy, often appearing airheaded or scatterbrained. However, beneath her eccentric personality lies a kind-hearted and loyal character, especially when it comes to her friends. Her quirks serve as both comedic contrast and emotional balance within the darker themes of The Rebellion Story.

Powers & Abilities

Nagisa Momoe possesses unique magical abilities that reflect her whimsical theme and her origin as the human form of the witch Charlotte. After becoming part of the Law of Cycles, her powers expanded significantly, granting her access to abilities that bridge both magical girl and witch traits.

Form Switching
As a member of the Law of Cycles, Nagisa has the rare ability to freely shift between her magical girl form and her witch form, Charlotte. This transformation allows her to harness powers normally lost to despair, while retaining her consciousness and will. It is a unique trait not shared by other magical girls, highlighting her special status.

Trumpet-Based Attacks
Nagisa wields a trumpet as her primary magical weapon. She can use it to emit powerful sound-based attacks, including bubbles capable of damaging and even cracking the barriers of a witch’s labyrinth, an otherwise difficult feat for standard magical girl abilities.

Summoning Familiars
Nagisa can summon her witch form’s familiars, Pyotr and Polina, as allies in combat. These companions aid her in various ways, often providing additional offensive support or acting as distractions during battle.

Her powers combine visual whimsy with significant magical force, making her a deceptively strong fighter despite her playful and childlike personality.

Etymology

The name Nagisa (なぎさ) is written in hiragana, which does not carry an inherent meaning. However, it can also be written using the kanji 渚, which means “shore”. According to her mother in the event Nagisa’s Wish Was Granted, the name was chosen because the shore was the place where she first met Nagisa’s father, making it a sentimental and symbolic choice.

Her surname, Momoe (百江), consists of the kanji 百 (momo), which typically means “hundred”, though in alternate readings it may be associated with “river”, and 江 (e), which translates to “bay”. Together, the name evokes natural imagery such as rivers and bays that subtly complements the peaceful, innocent side of Nagisa’s character.
