Orca

Orca is a key antagonist in the anime and manga series Children of the Whales. He serves as the Commander of the Falaina Extermination Forces and is the older brother of Lykos. A member of the ápostasía (άοστασία) those who have partially rejected the Empire’s emotionless doctrine, Orca retains some of his emotions through the consumption of sarka, a privilege granted to him after attaining the high military rank of pràsino.

His true name is unknown, as citizens of the Empire are not given personal names. “Orca” is a surname assigned to him during his time in the military. He is also a descendant of a bloodline known for producing daimonas, giving him a unique and dangerous legacy within the world of the series.

Personality

Appearance in Anime

Orca is a highly intelligent, calculating, and morally complex individual, known for his calm and composed exterior. As a former commander in the Allied Empire and a designated ápostasía, he retains the ability to feel emotion, though he often suppresses it in favor of logic and strategy. His behavior often mirrors the emotionless affect of those controlled by the Nous, but beneath the surface lies an intense and conflicted personality.

He exhibits dominance and defiance, frequently challenging authority even that of the Council. Though outwardly cold-blooded and unshaken by violence or pain, he possesses a strong will and adapts quickly to unforeseen events, relying on his powerful thymia (saimia) and sharpened instincts from years of warfare. He often manipulates both allies and enemies alike with his eloquence, weaving persuasive arguments, analogies, or outright deceit. Orca himself claims he has never lost a verbal exchange.

Despite his ruthlessness often sacrificing others to advance his goals Orca shows signs of emotional depth and vulnerability, especially in private or when interacting with those he deeply cares for. He is known for his mockery and sarcasm, which often reflect his true opinions of others. Outwardly sociable and confident, Orca easily adjusts his tone and approach depending on whom he is speaking with, probing for weaknesses or opportunities to persuade.

While many within the Empire see him as an eccentric and dangerous figure, Orca’s motivations are more nuanced. Publicly, he appears power-hungry and disruptive, stealing Nous and moving toward secession. However, he repeatedly states he has no desire for power. His true objective is the creation of Kitrino, a paradise where the people he cares about, such as his sister Lykos (formerly known as Kannavi), Leodari, the children he’s taken under his wing, and Itia, can live in peace, free from the control of the Nous. This goal is both selfless and selfish: while it offers potential liberation for humanity, it also comes at the cost of countless lives and forced upheaval.

Orca suffers from deep psychological trauma, which has led to a split in his personality. As a child, he was sensitive and introverted. Following the massacre in Kitrino, he created a stronger, more resolute persona to carry out the burden of his vision. This internal divide explains the contradictions in his behavior compassionate and grief stricken at times, yet methodical and ruthless at others. While his “stronger” alter drives his mission forward, his “weaker” self surfaces in moments of vulnerability, such as grieving for children or flinching at the mention of his sister.

He often operates under the belief that if he dies, it would mean his ideals were flawed and unworthy. Conversely, if he survives, it reaffirms that his dream is necessary for the world. This existential gamble manifests in his reckless and self-destructive behavior, including his indifference to serious injuries. His suicidal tendencies are deeply rooted in guilt especially over the Kitrino massacre and his desire for redemption through his idealized vision.

In the end, Orca demonstrates a sense of justice that transcends ideology. He eventually chooses to abandon his plan, realizing that the destruction and loss it would cause outweigh any potential salvation. He redirects his efforts toward his sister’s happiness, setting aside his pride and despair to seek a more compassionate resolution.

Appearance

Orca has long white hair, striking raspberry-red eyes, and tan skin. A prominent scar runs diagonally across his face, serving as a distinguishing feature. His standard attire includes a long black coat with red trimmings, fastened at the waist with a purple-red sash.

In the manga, his clothing varies slightly. He is initially depicted wearing a dark robe either black or deep blue with an eye motif pattern. Later in the story, he replaces this with a black robe featuring white designs. After receiving a letter from his parents containing a necklace tied to his ancestral lineage, he begins wearing the necklace over his coat, symbolizing his connection to his origins and the legacy of the daimonas.

Plot

Orca serves as the commander of the Falaina Extermination Forces, tasked with eradicating the inhabitants of the Mud Whale. He is believed to have orchestrated the ambush against the Skylos Infiltration Force, further cementing his reputation as a strategic and manipulative figure within the Empire.

Following the destruction of the Nous Skylos, Orca is arrested and brought before the Empire’s council, where he is sentenced to death. However, he narrowly escapes execution by shifting the blame for the incident onto a daimonas, claiming that its intervention led to the mission’s failure. He warns the council that capturing the daimonas is essential to preparing for an impending second apocalypse. Orca further deflects responsibility by placing the failure squarely on Arachni, another commander, criticizing his emotional instability during the mission.

Tensions escalate when Arachni, believing Orca is about to retaliate, draws a weapon and shoots off the tips of two of Orca’s fingers. Orca uses the incident to further discredit Arachni, convincing the council that Arachni’s emotional volatility rendered him unfit for command. As a result, Orca is cleared of blame and allowed to continue his operations.

Afterward, Orca returns to his quarters with Itia. There, Itia discovers that Liontari is still alive, suggesting that Orca has further plans yet to unfold.

Relationships

Lykos
Orca is the older brother of Lykos. Initially, he appears emotionally detached from her, even referring to her as a potential “research sample” to observe the effects of the Mud Whale (Falaina). However, as the story progresses, it becomes clear that Lykos is the person Orca cares about most. His ultimate goal to create a peaceful world for Lykos, Kannavi, and the people of Kitrino stems from his deep desire to ensure her happiness. Despite this, his love is conflicted; he frequently endangers her and struggles to express affection, even during moments of reconciliation. Mentions of Lykos often trigger Orca’s more vulnerable “weaker alter,” revealing the emotional depth he hides.

Kannavi
Kannavi is Orca’s closest and most trusted companion, and arguably the only person Orca has ever considered a true friend. They met in the military around age 17 and developed a close bond, even in the emotionless structure of the Empire. After Kannavi was dismissed from the army due to poor medical performance, Orca having attained the high rank of pràsino recruited him to his side. While their relationship following the tragedy at Kitrino is left somewhat ambiguous, they remain deeply connected. Kannavi supports Orca’s goals even after his secession from the Empire and is one of the few people who can challenge Orca directly. Their relationship, grounded in mutual trust, loyalty, and emotional intimacy, eventually surpasses the boundaries of traditional friendship, suggesting a profound, if unspoken, bond.

Itia
Orca proposes to Itia shortly after meeting Atsalí, initially as a political and strategic arrangement. While the marriage begins as one of convenience, Orca gradually develops genuine affection for her though whether it is romantic remains ambiguous. Itia suspects his interest may stem from her resemblance to Lykos, but this is never confirmed. She accepts his proposal, seeing it as a means to improve her circumstances. Over time, she comes to understand Orca’s true nature and grows to care for him deeply, developing sympathy and companionship. Their relationship, while not explicitly romantic, is marked by mutual respect, emotional support, and loyalty. Itia also forms a strong bond with Kannavi, and the trio develops a uniquely close dynamic. Though the exact nature of their affection remains open to interpretation, it is clear that all three share a deep and enduring connection.

Trivia

    • Orca’s name is derived from the Greek word ὄρκα (Orca), meaning “killer whale.”
      • Several characters throughout the series remark on Orca’s unusual sense of humor.
