Ouni is a prominent character in the anime and manga series Children of the Whales. He is the leader of the Moles, a rebellious group known for frequently breaking the Mud Whale’s rules and challenging authority. Despite his defiant nature, Ouni possesses the most powerful thymia among the Marked inhabitants of the Mud Whale.
He is later revealed to be a daimonas, a being fused with the essence of a Nous. His aura is identical to that of Midén, another daimonas, confirming his extraordinary origins and deep connection to the ship’s hidden past.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Ouni is driven by a deep desire to explore the world beyond the confines of the Mud Whale. While he often comes across as aloof and emotionally distant, those close to him such as Chakuro recognize that he genuinely cares for his friends and seeks to protect them, even if he struggles to express those feelings clearly. His rebellious nature masks a sensitive and vulnerable core.
Beneath his defiant exterior, Ouni longs for connection and acceptance. As a daimonas, he harbors a profound fear of being rejected by the very people he wishes to protect, especially his closest companions. This fear is highlighted when he is shown a hallucination by a Nous in which his best friend, Nibi, claims he would never have befriended Ouni had he known about his true nature. The experience devastates Ouni and underscores his insecurity about being different.
Interestingly, Ouni also has a creative side and an eye for style he is credited with sparking a fashion trend among the residents of the Mud Whale, revealing an often overlooked aspect of his personality.
Appearance
Ouni has long, dark purple hair typically tied back in a messy ponytail, and purplish navy blue eyes. He is often seen wearing a necklace with a rectangular pendant. A notable detail in his presence is the frequent appearance of Mud Moths small, white, puffball-like creatures that glow blue in the dark often seen floating near him.
His usual attire consists of a blue shirt with black markings, a grey sash tied around his waist, dark pants, and sandals. Ouni is widely regarded as the most beautiful and stylish person on the Mud Whale, having unintentionally sparked fashion trends among its residents.
History
Ouni mysteriously appeared on the Mud Whale one day, with no known parents or affiliations to any of the island’s established groups. His origins were unknown, and he remained an outsider among the community.
During a fight with Nibi, both boys were thrown into the belly of the ship as punishment. It was there that Nibi extended a hand of friendship, offering to help Ouni achieve his dream of seeing the world beyond the Mud Whale. This moment sparked a sense of purpose in Ouni, and he joined Nibi’s circle of friends. The group later became known as the Moles, a rebellious faction known for challenging authority and seeking freedom beyond the island’s borders.
Relationships
Nibi
Nibi was Ouni’s best friend and the person closest to his heart. They had known each other since childhood, and it was Nibi who inspired Ouni to pursue his dream of seeing the world beyond the Mud Whale. Nibi’s influence gave Ouni a sense of purpose and belonging. After Nibi’s death, Ouni cried for the first time and expressed that without him, he never would have found a reason to live.
Suou
Initially distant, Ouni and Suou begin to work together in the fight against the Allied Empire. Over time, mutual respect grows between them, and their relationship evolves into one of friendship.
Shuan
Ouni initially resents Shuan, viewing him as intrusive and critical particularly when Shuan draws attention to Ouni’s identity as a daimonas. Despite their rocky start, the two gradually form a bond rooted in their shared experience as daimonas, developing a deeper understanding of each other.
Kicha
Kicha is one of Ouni’s childhood friends and harbors a one-sided crush on him. She cares deeply for Ouni and simply wishes he would let others in and express his emotions more openly.
Taisha
Ouni was created from Taisha’s emotions and her deep love for the Mud Whale. This connection ties his existence directly to the island and its spiritual essence.
Orca
Ouni holds a deep hatred for Orca, who inflicted devastating harm on the Mud Whale and manipulated Ouni’s daimonas nature to defeat and abduct him. Orca’s actions are a source of intense trauma and anger for Ouni.
