Sami was a character in the anime and manga series Children of the Whales. She was the younger sister of Suou and a close childhood friend of Chakuro. Unlike her brother, Sami was one of the Marked individuals capable of using thymia, a power that draws from emotion and shortens the user’s lifespan. Her kind and gentle nature made her a comforting presence aboard the Mud Whale.
Plot
Appearance in Anime
Sami first appears attending the funeral of her former teacher, Benihi. When Chakuro later encounters her, she advises him to forget about Benihi, believing that dwelling on death would rob them of peace. She later joins an expedition to the battleship where Lykos is discovered. Mistaking a label on Lykos’ shirt as her name, Sami inadvertently gives Lykos her name. Alongside Chakuro, she brings Lykos back to the Mud Whale and helps escort her to the infirmary.
Sami later joins Chakuro, Lykos, Nezu, and Ro on a trip to witness the Great Flying. However, after Chakuro refuses to carry her and jokingly calls her heavy, Sami runs off, hurt by the comment. The next day, while working in the fields with Chakuro, they witness mysterious shapes emerging from the Sea of Sand. These turn out to be battleships from the Empire’s vessel, Skylos, which open fire on the Mud Whale. In a moment of instinct and sacrifice, Sami shields Chakuro with her body and is fatally wounded.
Following her death, Chakuro sees Sami in a vision presented by Neri. In this vision, Sami kisses him and reveals that her dream was to one day become his wife. When Chakuro pleads to join her, she gently refuses, explaining that he still has something important to accomplish in the world of the living.
Appearance
Sami had short blonde hair with bangs and wore two ribbons tied on either side of her head. Her usual outfit consisted of a yellow dress layered beneath a white shirt, paired with long white socks held up by ribbons. She had warm amber eyes and was often seen with a gentle smile, reflecting her kind and cheerful personality.
Personality
Sami was a kind-hearted, friendly, and innocent girl with a gentle nature. She was somewhat naive, often viewing the world with childlike optimism. Deeply caring, she frequently worried about Chakuro’s well-being and supported him emotionally throughout their time together on the Mud Whale. Her warmth and concern for others made her a comforting presence among her peers.
Relationships
Chakuro
Sami and Chakuro were close childhood friends who shared a deep emotional bond. Over time, it became clear that their feelings for each other extended beyond friendship. Before her death, Sami expressed her dream of one day becoming Chakuro’s wife, a sentiment he quietly reciprocated.
Lykos
Sami was part of the expedition team that discovered Lykos aboard the ship inhabited by Nous Lykos. She played a role in bringing Lykos to the Mud Whale and was the one who gave her the name “Lykos” after misinterpreting a label on her clothing.
