Kaede

Kaede (楓) is one of the main characters in Fena: Pirate Princess. He is the younger twin brother of Enju and a member of the Seven Samurai. Alongside his brother and their comrades, Kaede joins Fena Houtman on her journey, serving as both a swordsman and a source of comic relief within the group dynamic.

Twin Brothers Enju and Kaede

As Enju’s younger twin brother, Kaede closely resembles him in appearance. Both share the same height, brown eyes, and dirty blonde hair, making them nearly indistinguishable at first glance. However, their attire and armor help to differentiate them.

Kaede wears a black samurai helmet featuring a large flat ring and a striking blue plume extending from the back. His face mask, like Enju’s, lacks a mustache and instead includes distinct V-shaped markings beneath the eyeholes, adding a unique flair to his otherwise mirrored appearance.

Personality

Kaede shares a friendly and mischievous nature with his twin brother, Enju. While both are known for their playful behavior, Kaede is portrayed as slightly more composed and traditionally masculine in contrast to Enju’s more flamboyant traits.

According to his voice actor in an interview on the official Japanese website, Kaede serves as a “mood maker” within the Seven Samurai, often lightening the atmosphere with his presence and energy during tense or serious moments.

Relationships

Enju
As his twin brother, Enju shares a close bond with Kaede. The two are often seen together, exhibiting similar mischievous and playful behavior. Kaede enjoys his brother’s company and frequently engages in lighthearted banter with him during their travels.

Tsubaki
Tsubaki is presumed to act as a caretaker for Kaede and Enju, often managing their antics with patience albeit with occasional frustration. As the eldest member of the group, he provides structure and guidance, and the twins appear to respect his authority while still challenging his composure with their behavior.

Makaba
While direct interactions are limited, Kaede appears to respect Makaba as a fellow samurai and comrade. Like the rest of the crew, he likely relies on Makaba’s strength and leadership in battle.

Salman
In the first episode, Kaede and Enju witness Salman being restrained by two soldiers. Instead of intervening immediately, Kaede jokes with his brother about waiting to see if Salman’s teeth would be pulled out, showcasing the twins’ mischievous and teasing nature, even in tense situations.

Etymology

The name Kaede (楓) means “maple” in Japanese. The maple tree is often associated with beauty, change, and the passing of seasons in Japanese culture.

Trivia

    • Kaede’s helmet design bears a resemblance to that of the real-life samurai Tachibana Muneshige, known for his distinctive circular crest.
      • He is the younger twin of Enju, though their identical appearances often make them difficult to distinguish at first glance.
