Tsubaki

Tsubaki (椿) is one of the main characters in Fena: Pirate Princess. He is a member of the Seven Samurai and serves as one of the key allies who joins Fena Houtman on her journey. As a senior figure within the group, Tsubaki often acts as a stabilizing force, guiding the younger members while supporting their shared mission.

Personality

Appearance in Anime

As the eldest and most mature member of the Seven Samurai, Tsubaki takes on the role of the group’s peacemaker and informal leader. He is responsible for maintaining order among his often unruly comrades, ensuring that they cooperate and behave appropriately during their mission. His grounded presence balances the group’s chaotic energy, especially during moments of conflict or distraction.

Tsubaki has a short temper when provoked by the antics and recklessness of his crewmates. He can become explosively angry, particularly when others disobey his instructions or act irresponsibly. One notable instance of this is when he orders Makaba to throw Enju, Kaede, and Fena off the ship after they sneak away and act on their own during their time in Bar-Baral.

According to his voice actor in an interview on the official Japanese website, Tsubaki is portrayed as the one responsible for keeping the team together. However, his efforts are often tested by the unpredictable behavior of his companions particularly Kaede and Enju whose mischief frequently frustrates him in a humorous way.

Appearance

Tsubaki has shaggy, spiky burgundy-brown hair that is tied back into a short ponytail. He has dark brown eyes and a set of freckles across the bridge of his nose, adding a subtle, distinguishing feature to his face.

As part of his samurai attire, Tsubaki wears a green-colored helmet adorned with two tall, curved horns and a dark mane, resembling the design of Makaba’s helmet and contributing to his imposing presence in battle.

Etymology

The name Tsubaki (椿) translates to “camellia flower” in Japanese. The camellia is a traditional symbol in Japanese culture, often associated with beauty, strength, and devotion.

Relationships

Fena Houtman
Tsubaki places trust in Fena’s instincts and memories, often supporting her decisions despite his more disciplined outlook. However, her bubbly and spontaneous nature tends to clash with his desire for order, occasionally testing his patience.

Shitan
Tsubaki is frequently irritated by Shitan’s habit of altering his cooking and his tendency to pursue romantic flings whenever the crew visits a port. These behaviors conflict with Tsubaki’s focus on discipline and structure.

Kaede
Tsubaki is presumed to act as a caretaker or mentor figure for Kaede and his twin, Enju. He often grows exasperated by their mischievous antics, though their behavior tends to annoy him in a comical rather than serious manner.

Enju
Like with Kaede, Tsubaki appears to take on a guardian-like role for Enju. The twins’ energetic and often chaotic behavior frequently tries his patience, though he tolerates it with a mixture of frustration and reluctant affection.

Makaba
Makaba functions as Tsubaki’s right-hand man, helping him maintain order among the crew. Tsubaki relies on Makaba’s strength and composure to enforce discipline aboard the ship.

Trivia

      • He is frequently seen managing or reprimanding the younger members, particularly Kaede and Enju.
        • His helmet design, with its tall horns and dark mane, is similar to Makaba’s, reinforcing their roles as the group’s core enforcers.
          • Despite his stern personality, Tsubaki’s short temper is often played for comedic effect, especially in response to the crew’s antics.
