Honoka

Honoka was once a classmate and friend of Shuichi Kagaya and Elena Aoki, but her life took a dark turn when she became responsible for initiating the Coin Hunt game, a deadly and destructive event. After being revived by Kaito, Honoka transforms into a terrifying abomination, a monstrous entity with a singular goal: to bring about the end of the world. As a result of her horrific transformation, she becomes one of the main antagonists of the Gleipnir series, wielding immense power and a desire for chaos. Her actions and the consequences of her revival significantly impact the protagonists’ journeys.

Appearance in Anime

Honoka was once a kind and caring person, always putting the needs of others before her own. She was selfless, often sacrificing her own identity and desires for the sake of her friends, believing that no one would notice or care if she were to disappear. This deep sense of empathy led her to prioritize the well-being of others, even at the cost of her own happiness.

However, Honoka’s naivety and unwavering positivity also played a role in her eventual downfall. She never fully considered the darker consequences of her actions, particularly the potential dangers posed by the Coin Hunt game she initiated. She failed to recognize that her well-intentioned game could attract individuals with dangerous desires, setting in motion a series of catastrophic events.

According to Kaito, Honoka also harbored a crush on Naoto, though given Kaito’s psychotic and delusional nature, the truth behind this claim is uncertain. Nonetheless, it speaks to her underlying vulnerability and humanity before her tragic transformation.

Appearance

Honoka is a young girl with a gentle, kind appearance that reflects her caring personality. She has long, straight black hair, which she typically keeps neatly styled, complementing her soft features. Her eyes are a deep shade of brown, often conveying warmth and compassion, typical of someone who is thoughtful and selfless.

After being revived and transformed by Kaito, Honoka’s appearance drastically changes. She becomes a horrifying, monstrous abomination, her once innocent look now replaced with something far more unsettling. Her new form is characterized by grotesque features and a terrifying aura, a stark contrast to the girl she once was. This transformation reflects the loss of her humanity and her descent into one of the series’ main antagonists.

Powers and Abilities

After Aiko’s death, Honoka made a desperate wish to take on Aiko’s appearance, hoping that no one would suspect Aiko’s suicide. However, after being revived by Kaito, Honoka undergoes a dramatic transformation, becoming a luminescent female figure with inhuman strength and capabilities.

One of Honoka’s most terrifying abilities is the power to banish people to a separate, eldritch dimension, which she refers to as her “heart.” In this dimension, the victims are transformed into monstrous, mindless beings, completely stripped of their humanity. Once someone is banished, they are erased from the real world entirely, with all memories, records, and traces of their existence wiped away.

Within her “heart,” the transformation and abilities of other monsters are nullified, rendering them powerless. However, Shuichi is shown to be an exception to this, as his abilities are not completely diminished in the eldritch realm. This unique feature of Honoka’s power highlights the unsettling nature of her abilities and the devastating consequences of being caught in her dimension.

Relationships

Naoto
Since her early childhood, Honoka harbored a deep crush on Naoto, which grew to an obsessive degree. After Aiko’s death, Honoka’s fixation on him led her to take extreme measures, ultimately posing as Aiko to get closer to him. This act, driven by her desire for attention and affection, becomes a pivotal moment in Honoka’s life. However, she later regrets her actions, realizing that her attempt to assume Aiko’s identity only complicated matters and contributed to the tragic events that followed.

Aiko
Aiko was Honoka’s best friend, and her death profoundly affected Honoka. Stricken by grief and the fear of losing Aiko’s memory, Honoka makes a deal with the Alien to transform into Aiko, hoping to hide the truth of Aiko’s suicide from their friends. This decision sets in motion a series of catastrophic events, ultimately leading to Honoka’s own death and the rise of Kaito as a dangerous force. Aiko’s death and Honoka’s actions to conceal it become the catalyst for Honoka’s transformation into a monstrous abomination, marking the beginning of her tragic descent.

Trivia

    • Not only is Honoka responsible for initiating the Coin Hunt game, but she is also the one who convinced the Alien to offer a wish or reward in exchange for the coins. This makes her the direct cause of all the dark and destructive events that unfold in the series, despite her initial motives being good and pure. Her well-intentioned actions set off a chain of events that lead to chaos, highlighting the tragic consequences of her naivety and the corruption of her original desires.
