Appearance
Shuichi Kagaya is a slender, average-height young boy with short black-brown hair. He occasionally wears glasses, adding to his unassuming, everyday appearance. Following his encounter with Elena, Shuichi bears a noticeable scar across his neck, a reminder of the traumatic events he’s endured.
In his monster form, Shuichi transforms into a dog mascot-like creature. His body is covered in light brown fur, with the top right side of his face being darker brown. His most distinctive features include a gun and a zipper located on his back. The zipper can be opened, allowing someone to enter and take control of his body, a feature that plays a significant role in his interactions with Clair Aoki, who uses it to manipulate his movements.
Personality
At the start of Gleipnir, Shuichi Kagaya is a kind-hearted, shy individual both in and out of school. He is known for his intelligence, having received a university recommendation and often being sought after for help by his peers. Despite his reserved nature, Shuichi is a well-regarded student with a quiet sense of responsibility.
Upon discovering his ability to transform into a monster, Shuichi is initially overwhelmed with fear and confusion. His newfound reality creates a deep internal conflict, leaving him feeling detached from life and struggling to maintain any sense of normalcy. He reacts with cynicism, hiding his terror behind a veil of indifference.
His encounter with Clair Aoki intensifies his emotional turmoil. He is initially horrified by her willingness to go to extreme lengths in her quest for answers about monsters, especially her seemingly boundless capacity for violence. This stark contrast to his own lingering sense of humanity leaves him feeling even more alienated. However, as Clair reveals her own pain and motivations, Shuichi begins to empathize with her, and their bond grows. This mutual understanding culminates in a pivotal moment when Shuichi musters the courage to stop Clair from taking her own life, having realized the depth of her feelings for him.
As explained by the Alien, Shuichi’s monster form represents his inner emptiness and desire for someone to “fill him” and compensate for his own perceived flaws. This reflects his codependent relationship with Clair, as he relies on her to anchor him emotionally and provide meaning to his otherwise hollow existence.
As the story unfolds, Shuichi becomes more serious, cold, and outwardly confident, gradually accepting his monstrous nature and seeking to understand and control it. Despite retaining his inherent kindness and altruism, Shuichi begins to neglect his own well-being and self-worth, adopting a self-sacrificial mindset as he strives to protect those he cares about, even at the cost of his own health and safety.
Plot
Shuichi Kagaya, a seemingly ordinary high school student, initially leads a typical school life. He has recently turned down the principal’s recommendation for a prestigious university position, feeling that it wasn’t the right choice for him. Later, his classmate Mifune approaches him, revealing that she has been selected for the recommendation, and she notices that Shuichi had declined the offer. Shuichi reassures her that she deserved the recommendation, acknowledging her hard work.
One day, while casually using his phone, Shuichi’s heightened sense of smell alerts him to a fire nearby. He quickly identifies the scent of a girl trapped inside the building. Realizing there isn’t enough time to call for help, Shuichi transforms into his monstrous, dog mascot-like form. He breaks through a wall to rescue the girl and leaves her safely outside, though he remains unaware of the consequences of his actions.
The next day, Shuichi discovers that he has lost his phone, and when he arrives at school, he is surprised to find the girl he saved, Clair Aoki, holding it. Clair reveals that she saw him transform into a monster and wants to talk to him about it. On the school rooftop, Shuichi initially denies being a monster, but Clair, determined to learn more, pushes him off the roof. As Shuichi falls, he transforms mid-air and leaps back to the rooftop, startling Clair. She begins to question him, threatening to expose his secret.
Shuichi, still uncertain about his transformation, explains that he doesn’t know why it happened, he simply woke up one day as a monster. During their conversation on the way to her apartment, Clair introduces herself properly and shows him a strange coin she found, but Shuichi has no knowledge of it. Once inside her apartment, Clair opens up about her search for her sister, who, like Shuichi, has become a monster. This revelation sets the stage for their growing connection and the beginning of their journey together.
Etymology
The first name “Shuichi” is composed of the kanji 修 (shū), meaning “to correct,” “to study,” or “to cultivate,” and 一 (ichi), meaning “one” or “first.” This combination suggests a sense of diligence and effort toward self-improvement or mastery, which aligns with Shuichi’s character, who struggles with his inner conflict and desires to understand and control his monstrous abilities.
Shuichi’s surname, “Kagaya,” is written with the kanji 加 (ka), meaning “to add” or “to increase,” and 賀 (ga), meaning “congratulations” or “celebration.” The name suggests growth, success, and progression. 谷 (ya) means “valley,” evoking a sense of depth or being surrounded by challenges. The surname could symbolize Shuichi’s journey, both his struggles and growth as he faces the trials of being a monster and finding his place in the world.
Power and Abilities
When Shuichi Kagaya transforms into his monster form, he gains superhuman physical abilities, including:
These abilities also extend to his human form, but at a much weaker level compared to his monster state. Additionally, Shuichi may possess a form of immortality while transformed. For example, when his head was severed from his body, he remained alive in his monster form. However, the alien warns that transforming back to his human form would have resulted in his immediate death.
One of Shuichi’s more unique abilities is the capacity to sustain a “host” inside his transformed body. When this happens, his powers increase further, but the host gains the ability to control Shuichi to some extent, depending on their compatibility. The more aligned Shuichi and his partner are in their goals, the stronger the monster form becomes, enhancing Shuichi’s resistance to physical damage, increasing his speed and reaction time, and improving his overall performance in combat. This bond enables both the monster and the host to act as a unified, more powerful being, though the host may still suffer damage if the attack is too intense. Even in this form, Shuichi feels pain, though it seems to be lessened. The inside of his monster form is also described as very hot and slimy in texture.
Additionally, when transformed, Shuichi gains a revolver, which only appears in his monster form and disappears when he reverts to his human form. The revolver holds up to 6 bullets and possesses strength akin to that of an anti-material rifle. It can incapacitate powerful opponents, as demonstrated when Shuichi used it to wound Elena by shooting her twice, once in the leg and once near the shoulder. However, the weapon is far too large for a normal human to wield due to its size, and its recoil would likely cause severe harm to anyone who attempts to use it.
Shuichi’s most unique ability manifests under specific conditions. If the host inside his form is on the verge of death and Shuichi experiences an intense emotional desire to save them, this ability activates. It allows Shuichi and the host to merge into a single being. This combined form is significantly stronger and visually different, maintaining elements of both the host’s appearance and the beast-like traits of Shuichi’s original form. In this state, both beings share memories, though the host’s memory transfer is often unclear initially.
The form also alters the weapon Shuichi wields: in the case of Yoshioka, his revolver transforms into two smaller pistols, while in Clair’s case, it changes into a katana. When this ability was first used with Elena, it was powerful enough to halt Kaito’s regenerative abilities, though Shuichi hesitated and ultimately did not kill him. Yoshioka later describes this ability as incredible and unique, noting that it was the key to defeating Honoka.
