Yozuru Kagenui (影縫 余弦, Kagenui Yozuru) is an oddity specialist and professional onmyōji in the Monogatari series. She is known for her expertise in dealing with immortal oddities and is often called upon to exterminate beings that defy death. Yozuru is recognized for her strict principles and unyielding approach to her work, treating her duties with unwavering seriousness.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Yozuru Kagenui is a well-known figure within the world of the supernatural, held in such high regard that even Shinobu Oshin, an immensely powerful oddity refuses to speak about her out of respect. She speaks in a fluent Kansai dialect, with the skill of a native speaker, which adds to her distinct and imposing presence.
One of her most unusual traits is her refusal to let her feet touch the ground, as if avoiding stepping into a sea of invisible dangers. She maintains this behavior at all times, often standing on elevated surfaces or even using her familiar, Yotsugi Ononoki, as a platform. This peculiar habit is later revealed to be the result of a curse.
Despite appearing polite and approachable to strangers, Yozuru can be blunt and dismissive when speaking to oddities outside her mission. When facing her targets particularly immortal oddities she is merciless, willing to destroy them without hesitation, regardless of the consequences. Her ideology is rooted in a rigid sense of justice: she believes that immortal beings defy the natural order and must be eliminated. For her, the eradication of such entities is necessary, even if it causes collateral damage.
Nevertheless, Yozuru does show moments of compassion. She acknowledges Koyomi Araragi as a human despite his ties to the supernatural, suggesting that her worldview is not entirely without nuance. According to Koyomi, Yozuru reminds him somewhat of Meme Oshino, sharing a similar air of conviction and detachment.
Appearance
Yozuru has black hair styled in a bob cut with distinctive red streaks, complemented by a bird-shaped hair clip. Her eyes feature striking red pupils, adding to her imposing presence. She typically wears a khaki overshirt layered above a black collared top, which also bears a matching bird motif. Her outfit includes dark red pants held up by suspenders, and she completes her look with black high-heeled sandals.
Background
Yozuru Kagenui attended the same university as Deishuu Kaiki and Meme Oshino. Alongside them, she was a member of the university’s occult research club, which also included Tadatsuru Teori and their upperclassman, Izuko Gaen. Among the group, Yozuru was known for her strong sense of justice, often taking a more principled stance compared to her more morally ambiguous peers. She also appears to have a good understanding of Meme’s personality, including his trademark aloha shirt and the kinds of things he would or wouldn’t say to others.
During her time in the club, Yozuru developed a rivalry with Tadatsuru Teori, largely due to Yotsugi Ononoki choosing Yozuru as her master over him. Both Yozuru and Tadatsuru collaborated in the creation of Yotsugi’s artificial body, specifically her legs. As a consequence of their work, they both became afflicted with a curse that prevents them from touching the ground, an affliction that explains Yozuru’s peculiar way of moving through the world.
Relationship
Yotsugi Ononoki
Yozuru is the master of Yotsugi, a corpse that was reanimated as a tsukumogami. Although their relationship appears one-sided at times, with Yozuru treating Yotsugi more as a tool than a person, there is a deep bond between them rooted in trust and responsibility. Yotsugi chose Yozuru over Tadatsuru Teori to be her master, a decision that caused a long-standing rivalry. Yozuru uses Yotsugi as a platform to avoid touching the ground due to their shared curse, which originated during Yotsugi’s creation.
Tadatsuru Teori
Once a fellow member of the university occult club, Tadatsuru became Yozuru’s rival after Yotsugi chose her as her master. Their relationship is defined by competition and philosophical differences, particularly regarding how Yotsugi should be treated. Their shared involvement in constructing Yotsugi’s legs led to both being cursed, reinforcing their connection even through opposition.
Meme Oshino
Yozuru shares a complex but respectful connection with Meme, one of her university peers. She is familiar with his habits and principles, suggesting a level of understanding that extends beyond casual acquaintance. Although they follow different philosophies Meme opting for balance, and Yozuru for absolute justice she holds him in high regard.
Deishuu Kaiki
Though also a fellow member of the occult club, Yozuru’s relationship with Kaiki is less direct. They appear to hold little regard for each other’s approaches, with Kaiki’s cynical pragmatism clashing against Yozuru’s rigid sense of justice.
Izuko Gaen
As their upperclassman in the occult club, Gaen appears to have influenced Yozuru during their university days. While not much is shown of their direct interactions, Yozuru respects Gaen’s extensive knowledge and authority in supernatural matters.
Koyomi Araragi
Yozuru initially treats Koyomi as a target due to his connection with immortality. However, she eventually acknowledges his humanity and displays a degree of respect toward him. Despite her usual ruthlessness with oddities, she refrains from attacking him, indicating a nuanced judgment that goes beyond her typical black-and-white worldview.
