Hirano Taiga (平野 大河, Hirano Taiga), is a main supporting character in the anime and manga series Sasaki and Miyano and one of the two main protagonists of its spin-off series Hirano and Kagiura. A second-year high school student at an all-boys school, Hirano is known for his rough exterior, blond hair, and passionate nature, but beneath his tough appearance lies a deeply caring and responsible personality.
Initially introduced as an upperclassman and dormitory resident assistant (RA) in Sasaki and Miyano, Hirano’s story is expanded in Hirano and Kagiura, where his growing bond with his roommate Kagiura Akira takes center stage. His character explores themes of friendship, trust, emotional support, and the slow, evolving nature of romantic feelings.
Background

Appearance in Anime
Hirano attends an all-boys school where he serves as a dormitory resident assistant, tasked with supervising younger students. Due to his delinquent-like appearance bleached hair, multiple piercings, and a somewhat intimidating aura he is often misunderstood by those who don’t know him well. However, those close to him recognize Hirano as someone incredibly dependable, protective, and kind-hearted.
In Sasaki and Miyano, Hirano is a close friend and confidant of Masato Sasaki, often providing him with advice and support regarding his budding relationship with Yoshikazu Miyano. In Hirano and Kagiura, his relationship with his new first-year roommate, Akira Kagiura, becomes the focus, depicting Hirano’s struggle to understand his own deepening feelings.
Appearance
Hirano has a tall and athletic build, with short, choppy blond hair and pierced ears, giving him the appearance of a delinquent. He typically wears the school uniform in a slightly disheveled manner loosened tie, untucked shirt but never intentionally violates school rules. His sharp features and fierce expressions often mask his gentle personality, leading to frequent misunderstandings.
Despite his tough look, Hirano often blushes easily and shows vulnerable expressions, especially when flustered by emotional or personal situations.
Personality
Hirano is straightforward, responsible, and fiercely loyal. Though he may appear rough and intimidating, he is actually deeply empathetic and cares intensely about the well-being of his friends. He often acts as a reliable big brother figure, offering advice, protection, and a listening ear when needed.
Hirano can be surprisingly shy when it comes to his own emotions, particularly romantic ones. He has a strong sense of justice and fairness, dislikes dishonesty, and tends to act impulsively when he feels someone is being treated unfairly. His emotional honesty and awkwardness in unfamiliar situations make him both endearing and relatable.
Role in the Story
Sasaki and Miyano: In Sasaki and Miyano, Hirano plays the role of a trusted senior and advisor to Sasaki, often serving as a grounding influence. He listens patiently to Sasaki’s worries about his feelings for Miyano, offers support, and occasionally gives blunt, straightforward advice. Though not heavily involved in the romance itself, Hirano’s presence helps facilitate the growth of Sasaki and Miyano’s relationship.
Hirano and Kagiura: In the spin-off Hirano and Kagiura, Hirano becomes the main focus. His relationship with his roommate Akira Kagiura, a bright and earnest first-year student, evolves from simple camaraderie to something more complicated. As Kagiura openly admires and depends on Hirano, Hirano begins to grapple with unfamiliar, deeper emotions, struggling to understand whether his protectiveness is purely platonic or something more. Throughout their time living together, Hirano is forced to confront his own feelings, marking a slow-burn emotional journey centered on trust, vulnerability, and affection.
Relationships
Akira Kagiura: Hirano’s first-year roommate and close companion. Kagiura is earnest, warm, and openly affectionate toward Hirano, often seeking his approval and guidance. Their bond becomes the heart of Hirano and Kagiura, as Hirano struggles with his feelings while maintaining their close friendship.
Masato Sasaki: A good friend and fellow upperclassman. Hirano often offers Sasaki advice regarding his feelings for Miyano, acting as a supportive mentor. Their easygoing friendship is characterized by casual conversations and mutual trust.
Yoshikazu Miyano: Though they don’t interact as closely, Hirano respects Miyano and encourages Sasaki’s pursuit of a relationship with him, further showing his supportive and empathetic side.
