Appearance in Anime

At first, Minatsuki appears cool-headed and rational, maintaining his composure even when Market Maker’s efforts to capture Koku fail. He is deeply committed to achieving his organization’s goals and shows unwavering loyalty to Regulus, willingly sacrificing comrades and pawns to further their plans.

As the series progresses, it is revealed that Minatsuki is a Reggie, an unstable byproduct of a failed super-soldier experiment intended to revive a lineage of ancient winged beings led by the Black-Winged King. Due to the inherent flaws of his creation, Minatsuki gradually begins to lose control over his mind. His personality shifts toward aggression, developing a volatile temper and a growing tendency for violence, even turning against his own allies.

By the end of the series, Minatsuki fully descends into madness. His obsession with killing Koku consumes him, and he exhibits increasingly psychotic behavior. It is later uncovered that the Minatsuki known throughout the story is not the original, but rather a hollow creation, a phantom designed by Laica the true Minatsuki. This revelation shatters his fragile sense of self, leading to a complete mental breakdown.

Appearance

Minatsuki is a tall young man with long blonde hair and striking blue-green eyes. His typical attire consists of a black suit, giving him a composed and formal appearance. He often wears red clown-like makeup over his eyes and bears the Market Maker tattoo on his right hand, signifying his allegiance to the organization.

Based on his height and the nature of his existence as a Reggie, Minatsuki is estimated to be around 19 years old at the beginning of the series and nearly 20 by its conclusion.

Background

Minatsuki was created as part of a secret super-soldier project aimed at reviving a race of ancient winged beings, with the Black-Winged King as their leader. As a Reggie, he was one of the failed results of these experiments, carrying genetic instability that gradually affected his mind and behavior. Despite his flawed origins, Minatsuki rose to prominence within Market Maker, a clandestine government organization manipulating the social structure of Cremona from the shadows.

Throughout his service to Market Maker, Minatsuki demonstrated unwavering loyalty to Regulus and became instrumental in orchestrating many of the group’s covert operations. His main objective centered around capturing Koku, whose existence was closely tied to the ancient experiments. However, as the side effects of being a Reggie took hold, Minatsuki’s mental state deteriorated, leading to a violent unraveling of his original calm and calculated personality.

Ultimately, it is revealed that the Minatsuki seen throughout the series is not the original, but a phantom personality created by Laica, deepening the tragedy of his existence and explaining his final mental collapse.

Powers and Abilities

Expert Combatant
Minatsuki is highly skilled in both hand-to-hand combat and swordsmanship. His fighting ability is exceptional, allowing him to match Koku in battle even as his mental stability deteriorates.

Gold Steel Blade
Following the amputation of his left arm by Regulus (Gilbert Ross) to prevent death from Blue Metal poisoning, Minatsuki receives a prosthetic replacement in the form of a gold steel blade. This weapon is capable of slicing through most materials, although it is vulnerable to destruction by an activated Lohengrin.

Superhuman Speed
Minatsuki possesses remarkable speed, enabling him to effortlessly dodge or deflect bullets. His agility allows him to keep pace with Koku, a being of progenitor origin.

Superhuman Strength
As a Reggie, Minatsuki naturally has enhanced strength. He is capable of crushing steel objects and can easily kill a person with his bare hands.

Relationships

  • Regulus (Gilbert Ross): Minatsuki is deeply loyal to Regulus, viewing him as a leader and ally within Market Maker. Despite his devotion, Regulus ultimately amputates Minatsuki’s arm to save him from Blue Metal poisoning, showing a pragmatic rather than emotional bond between them.

  • Koku: Minatsuki is obsessed with capturing and later killing Koku. Initially, his pursuit is driven by Market Maker’s goals, but as his mind deteriorates, this objective becomes a personal obsession fueled by rage and psychosis.

  • Market Maker: As one of the head agents, Minatsuki interacts regularly with other members of Market Maker, although his willingness to sacrifice his comrades for personal and organizational goals eventually isolates him. His declining sanity leads him to betray and kill his fellow agents without hesitation.

  • Laica: It is revealed that Minatsuki himself is a creation of Laica, serving as a phantom extension of the true Minatsuki’s will. This revelation undermines Minatsuki’s sense of identity, contributing to his complete psychological collapse.

Etymology

The name “Minatsuki” (水無月) can be interpreted in Japanese as “Month of No Water,” which refers to the traditional name for June in the old Japanese calendar. Despite its literal meaning, June is actually the rainy season in Japan, creating a subtle irony that could reflect Minatsuki’s deceptive nature and hidden instability beneath a calm exterior. There is no official explanation for why he was given this name within the series, but it aligns with the themes of duality and concealed truths present in his character arc.

Trivia

    • Minatsuki is revealed to be the “phantom” created by the real Minatsuki, Laica.
