Haruki Nakayama

Haruki Nakayama  (中山 春樹, Nakayama Haruki) is one of the two deuteragonists of the Given anime and manga series. He is the bassist of the band Given and serves as the eldest member of the group. Calm, dependable, and supportive, Haruki often acts as the glue that holds the band together both musically and emotionally.

Appearance

Haruki Nakayama is a tall young man with long light brown hair, which he typically ties back, leaving his forehead visible. His fringe is clipped at the top, with side bangs that frame his face and extend down to his chin. He has light brown eyes and a small patch of stubble on his chin, giving him a slightly more mature appearance compared to his bandmates.

Haruki is usually seen wearing a pale orange, collarless hoodie with the sleeves pushed up to mid-forearm. Underneath, he layers a black button-up shirt over a white undershirt. He completes his outfit with moss green trousers and brown shoes with white soles.

Personality

Haruki Nakayama is kind, gentle, and warm-hearted. He exudes a carefree and cheerful presence, often humming while playing his bass guitar. He is naturally considerate and nurturing toward those around him, frequently spoiling his friends particularly Akihiko Kaji, with whom he shares a close and emotionally complex bond.

Though generally outgoing, Haruki has a shy side and tends to blush when flattered or physically teased, especially by Akihiko. As noted by Yatake Kōji, these reactions are often seen as endearing. Haruki is also known for being supportive and dependable, acting as a mediator during disagreements such as those between Ritsuka and Mafuyu and playing a key role in promoting the band and maintaining cohesion among its members.

Despite his friendly and optimistic exterior, Haruki struggles with insecurities, particularly regarding his musical abilities in comparison to his more experienced bandmates. He is deeply sensitive and tends to conceal negative emotions such as sadness or frustration behind his trademark casual smile.

History

Prior to the formation of Given, Haruki was an experienced bassist who had long been involved in music. Recognizing the potential of fellow musicians Akihiko Kaji and Ritsuka Uenoyama, he took the initiative to assemble them into a band. With Haruki on bass, Akihiko on drums, and Ritsuka on guitar, the group established a strong instrumental foundation.

The band’s dynamic shifted significantly after Mafuyu Satō joined as the vocalist. Although Haruki initially approached Mafuyu’s involvement with some hesitation, he quickly came to support him as the emotional core of the band began to form.

As the eldest member, Haruki often serves as the group’s mediator and emotional anchor. He plays a key role in maintaining harmony among the members, especially during times of personal conflict or creative tension. Throughout the series, Haruki’s own feelings—particularly those he harbors toward Akihiko—become more central, leading to emotional development that affects both his personal journey and the band’s overall cohesion.

Relationships

Akihiko Kaji
Haruki shares a deep and complicated relationship with Akihiko. Though they begin as close bandmates and friends, Haruki harbors unspoken romantic feelings for him. He struggles with these emotions due to Akihiko’s existing entanglement with his ex-boyfriend, Ugetsu. Over time, Haruki’s internal conflict becomes more pronounced, leading to emotional tension between the two. Their relationship undergoes significant development as Akihiko begins to confront his own feelings and the unhealthy nature of his past, ultimately choosing to move forward with Haruki.

Ritsuka Uenoyama
Haruki sees Ritsuka as a younger brother figure and an integral part of the band. He supports Ritsuka’s musical growth and budding relationship with Mafuyu. As one of the original members who invited Ritsuka to join, Haruki often offers guidance and encouragement, acting as a grounding force in the band’s dynamic.

Mafuyu Satō
While not as close to Mafuyu as he is to the other band members, Haruki is kind and supportive toward him. He respects Mafuyu’s vocal talents and gradually grows to understand his quiet and reserved nature. As Mafuyu integrates into the band, Haruki ensures he feels welcome and valued.
