Cyrus gios Apollodorus

Cyrus gios Apollodorus (キュロス, Kyros) is a character in the Altair: A Record of Battles (Shōkoku no Altair) series. He is a Kulak from Phoenicia and serves as a valuable ally to Mahmut Tuğrul. Intelligent and resourceful, Cyrus plays a key role in diplomatic and strategic efforts throughout the series.

Appearance

Cyrus gios Apollodorus is a young man of average height with a lean build. When first introduced, he wears a dark, wide-brimmed hat adorned with dreadlocks, beads, feathers, and small skulls likely to conceal his identity. He also dons a dark cloak and briefly sports a lip piercing, which does not appear in later scenes. Eventually, he removes the hat, revealing dark, short hair tied into a small ponytail.

Cyrus is often seen with a weary expression, accentuated by dark circles under his eyes. According to the official fanbook, this is the result of makeup he wore early in the story, which stained the skin beneath his eyes. He wears a gold earring in his left earlobe and several gold earrings on his right ear.

His typical attire consists of dark, somewhat worn clothing. He wears a black, sleeveless tank top beneath a mantle and a striped-pattern scarf, along with black calf-length pants and boots. Notably, he has a dark lizard tattoo on his left arm, a reference to his alias used during earlier events in the series.

Personality

Cyrus gios Apollodorus is a thrill-seeker who yearns for a life of meaning, shaped in part by his disillusionment with the privileged lifestyle he witnessed through his father. He harbors a strong distrust of politicians, criticizing them for lacking common sense, a sentiment that likely reflects his frustration with unpredictability and hidden agendas in political dealings.

Despite his casual demeanor, Cyrus is deeply principled and willing to risk his life for the greater good. He places high value on honesty and directness, as demonstrated when he earnestly questions Mahmut’s motives for aiding Phoenicia. Although he often appears detached or indifferent, Cyrus does not hesitate to speak out when provoked, such as when he angrily rebukes Antonio Lucio in Venedik for their failure to support Phoenicia during its time of need.

Cyrus tends to adopt an observational role, giving off an impression of aloofness, but he acts decisively when the situation demands it. His feelings toward Venedik are complex, leaving him emotionally conflicted. This tension fuels his strong suspicion of Abiriga, toward whom he behaves with visible childishness and hostility, revealing his struggle to reconcile trust with past grievances.

Abilities

Although Cyrus is not frequently shown in combat, he demonstrates quick reflexes and a defensive fighting style when the situation requires it. He also possesses practical knowledge useful in maritime settings most notably, his familiarity with light signal codes used by ships in the Centro Sea. This skill proves valuable during his capture by Sultan Baraban in Mizrak, where he uses coded signals to communicate covertly with Abiriga.

Relationships

Mahmut Tuğrul Cyrus develops a mutual respect for Mahmut and ultimately becomes one of his trusted allies. Initially skeptical of Mahmut’s intentions, Cyrus questions his motives for assisting Phoenicia, valuing transparency and honesty. However, Mahmut’s sincerity and dedication to justice earn Cyrus’s trust, leading to their cooperation throughout various political and military conflicts.

Abiriga Cyrus shares a tense and often antagonistic dynamic with Abiriga. His deep-rooted suspicion of Venedik colors his perception of Abiriga, causing him to behave coldly and, at times, childishly around him. Despite their differences, they manage to cooperate when necessary, including during their joint capture by Sultan Baraban, where Cyrus relies on Abiriga to help relay messages via light signals.

Antonio Lucio Cyrus harbors resentment toward Antonio Lucio and the leadership of Venedik due to their failure to intervene during the crisis in Phoenicia. This frustration culminates in an emotional outburst, as Cyrus expresses his anger at their inaction. His strained feelings toward Venedik as a whole are reflected in his skepticism and guarded behavior when dealing with its representatives.

Role in the Story

Cyrus gios Apollodorus plays a key supporting role in Altair: A Record of Battles, primarily representing the interests and struggles of Phoenicia, a neutral trading state caught between larger powers. Initially introduced during the Phoenician crisis, Cyrus acts as a voice of reason and emotional anchor amid the escalating political tensions. Though not a soldier, his bravery and resolve become evident as he advocates for his homeland and takes personal risks to secure aid.

Cyrus becomes an ally to Mahmut Tuğrul after questioning his intentions and ultimately recognizing his sincerity. He aids Mahmut in navigating the diplomatic and military challenges posed by the Balt-Rhein Empire’s expansion. His experiences expose the emotional weight of war and the cost of political inaction, particularly as he confronts Venedik’s refusal to assist Phoenicia, which deepens his distrust of major powers.

Throughout the series, Cyrus contributes through diplomacy, intelligence, and occasional action. His knowledge of maritime signaling proves useful during a key moment in Mizrak when he and Abiriga are captured by Sultan Baraban. By covertly communicating through light signals, he helps turn the tide of that encounter, highlighting his resourcefulness.

While not a front-line combatant, Cyrus embodies the perspective of those caught in the political crossfire, offering insight into the broader consequences of the empire’s ambitions. His alliance with Mahmut and evolving attitude toward characters like Abiriga underscore themes of trust, diplomacy, and national pride.
