Alice Maresato

Alice Maresato (希里 アリス, Maresato Arisu), is one of the main supporting characters in the anime and manga series Highschool of the Dead. She is a young girl who joins Takashi Komuro’s group of survivors during the early stages of the zombie apocalypse. Alice is introduced in Chapter 8 of the manga and Episode 7 of the anime. Although she is the youngest member of the group, her presence adds emotional depth to the narrative, serving as a symbol of innocence and hope amid chaos.

Due to her age, Alice does not participate in combat directly, but she plays a vital role in maintaining the group’s humanity and morale during their struggle for survival.

Appearance in anime

Before the outbreak, Alice lived with her father in a quiet residential neighborhood. Her life took a tragic turn when, during the early days of the zombie invasion, her father was killed by a paranoid adult who refused to offer them shelter. She was left defenseless and alone, moments away from being overwhelmed by the undead referred to as “Them” until she was rescued by Takashi Komuro and Kohta Hirano.

After being saved, Alice was taken in by the group and has remained with them since, developing close bonds with several members. Her cheerful demeanor and resilience help the others remain grounded despite the horrifying circumstances surrounding them.

Appearance

Alice is a young girl with short orange-blonde hair, big round eyes, and a petite frame. She is often seen wearing a frilled pink dress or school-appropriate clothes suited for her age. Due to the apocalyptic setting, her appearance is often messy or covered in dirt, yet she maintains a childlike innocence in her expressions.

She is frequently accompanied by her loyal dog, Zeke, who plays both a comforting and protective role in her life.

Personality

Alice is cheerful, curious, and bright, despite the loss of her father and the traumatic events she witnesses. She quickly becomes attached to the group, especially to Takashi, Saeko, and Shizuka, and looks up to them as parental or older sibling figures. Her unwavering positivity often brings emotional relief to the older group members, who are burdened by constant violence and loss.

However, Alice is not without moments of fear and sadness. When reminded of her father’s death or exposed to extreme danger, she exhibits the vulnerability typical of her age. Still, her bravery in the face of terror, such as using firecrackers to distract zombies, highlights her quiet strength and desire to help the group however she can.

Role in the Story

  • Rescue and Integration
Alice is rescued after witnessing her father’s unjust murder and being nearly attacked by the infected. Her rescue marks a pivotal moment for the group, showcasing their commitment to protecting not just themselves but others who can’t defend themselves. Alice is brought into the group and quickly accepted as one of their own.

  • Emotional Anchor
Throughout the story, Alice serves as a symbol of innocence and hope. Her presence reminds the group what they are fighting to protect. She also helps diffuse tension and maintain normalcy, particularly when interacting with the more stoic or aggressive members of the team.

  • Surviving with the Group
Though Alice does not fight, she remains close to the group in nearly every major encounter. She assists in minor ways, such as carrying supplies, comforting others, or using firecrackers given by Asami Nakaoka to create distractions when needed. Despite her age, she shows remarkable maturity and adaptability in dire situations.

Relationships

Takashi Komuro
Alice views Takashi as a protective older brother figure. He is one of her rescuers and remains one of her strongest sources of comfort. Takashi, in turn, is highly protective of Alice and considers her well-being a priority in decision-making.

Shizuka Marikawa
Shizuka, the group’s nurse, acts as a maternal figure for Alice. She often carries or consoles her and makes sure Alice is kept safe during moments of panic or attack.

Kohta Hirano
Kohta also plays a role in rescuing Alice and is one of the few members she interacts with early on. While Kohta is focused on defense, he shows a soft side when it comes to protecting Alice.

Zeke (Dog)
Alice is nearly inseparable from Zeke, a small dog she adopts after the outbreak. Zeke is both her companion and emotional anchor, offering comfort and loyalty in every moment of danger or fear.
