Miyo Kudou (久堂 美世, Kudō Miyo), née Saimori (斎森), is the main female protagonist of the My Happy Marriage (Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon) series. She is the only daughter of Shinichi Saimori and Sumi Usuba, and later becomes the wife of Kiyoka Kudou, the male protagonist of the story. Miyo’s character arc centers around her emotional growth and pursuit of happiness after a childhood marked by neglect and abuse.
Appearance

Appearance in Anime
Miyo Kudou is a young woman with a petite frame and delicate features. She has large, expressive eyes that are a unique blend of purple-pink with hints of dark blue and yellow. Her dark brown hair depicted as black in the manga is usually worn straight and tied into a low ponytail while doing housework, though she occasionally lets it flow freely. A small beauty mark beneath her right eye adds to her distinctive look. Her overall appearance strongly resembles that of her late mother, Sumi Usuba.
At the beginning of the series, Miyo is frequently described as beautiful by other characters. However, her beauty is overshadowed by a faded complexion, dull and damaged hair, dark eye bags, and calloused hands physical signs of the neglect and labor she endured while living at the Saimori estate. As the story progresses, Miyo gradually regains her health and confidence. Thanks to the care and kindness shown by Kiyoka Kudou, Hazuki Kudou, and Yurie, she begins to appear more vibrant, graceful, and refined.
Before her engagement, Miyo owned only a single tattered kimono, passed down from a servant. As she begins her new life, her wardrobe expands to include a range of elegant and colorful kimonos, many adorned with floral patterns. Her favorite is a pink kimono decorated with cherry blossom petals and paired with a yellow obi closely resembling one worn by her late mother, which holds deep sentimental value for her.
Personality
Miyo Kudou is portrayed as a kind-hearted, gentle, and soft-spoken young woman. She is naturally timid and obedient, traits that were reinforced by years of emotional neglect and mistreatment at the Saimori household. Her upbringing left her with low self-worth and a deep sense of unworthiness, often causing her to view herself as a burden to others.
Despite her inner fragility, Miyo possesses a quiet strength and resilience, enduring hardship with grace and without complaint. Her compassion extends even to those who have wronged her, reflecting her inherently forgiving nature.
As the series progresses, Miyo begins to blossom emotionally. Through the genuine kindness, support, and affection of Kiyoka Kudou along with the encouragement of Hazuki and Yurie she gradually builds confidence and begins to value herself more. Her journey is marked by emotional healing and growth as she learns to express her feelings, stand up for herself, and embrace happiness.
History
Miyo Kudou, born Miyo Saimori, was the product of a politically arranged marriage between Shinichi Saimori and Sumi Usuba, orchestrated by the Emperor himself. The union was meant to minimize the likelihood of their child inheriting the rare and powerful Dream-Sight ability, as the Usuba family had fallen into financial trouble and sought protection from social prejudice. Though the marriage lacked love, Sumi accepted the arrangement to support her family and safeguard their future.
Miyo’s early childhood was filled with warmth and affection, particularly from her mother. She remembers her father treating her kindly, though she later realizes his affection was more circumstantial than sincere. Unbeknownst to Shinichi, Sumi had secretly sealed Miyo’s Dream-Sight shortly after birth to prevent others from exploiting her power.
This concealment had devastating consequences. When Miyo failed to display the commonly inherited Spirit-Sight ability, Shinichi assumed she was born without a gift, an unacceptable disgrace within noble families. Feeling bitter about the forced marriage and the perceived failure of his daughter, Shinichi began rejecting Miyo, even as Sumi pleaded with him not to abandon their child.
Tragedy struck when Sumi died from an unspecified illness shortly after Miyo turned two. While Miyo grieved deeply, Shinichi, emotionally detached from his late wife, remarried within weeks. His new wife, Kanoko Saimori, had been his former fiancée, and she harbored deep resentment toward both Sumi and Miyo, blaming them for the dissolution of her prior engagement.
Kanoko’s arrival at the Saimori estate marked the beginning of Miyo’s long period of abuse. Kanoko subjected her to physical and emotional torment, repeatedly calling her a “thief’s daughter” and ensuring that Miyo was blamed for others’ misfortunes. Shinichi, burdened by guilt over his past with Kanoko, turned a blind eye to the abuse, giving Kanoko free rein over Miyo’s treatment.
Not long after, Miyo’s younger half-sister Kaya Saimori was born. Unlike Miyo, Kaya exhibited Spirit-Sight at the age of three, and her natural beauty and supernatural gift earned her the favor of the family. Miyo was quickly cast aside, treated as a burden and unwanted presence within her own household.
Miyo’s living conditions deteriorated further. One day, she returned home from school to discover that all of her belongings many of which had belonged to her late mother had been discarded. When she confronted Kanoko about their disappearance, she was punished severely and locked in a cold, dark storehouse overnight. During her confinement, her caretaker Hana was dismissed, either for opposing Kanoko’s cruelty or, as depicted in the anime, for speaking out about the removal of Sumi’s possessions.
Stripped of all remaining emotional support, Miyo’s status in the household was reduced to that of a servant. She received no formal education beyond elementary school (which she did not complete) and was subjected to hard labor. Her meals were deliberately limited, and her every mistake was met with punishment. Without financial allowance or means of escape, Miyo became a prisoner within her own home.
Shunned by her father, tormented by her stepmother, and overshadowed by her younger half-sister, Miyo grew up feeling worthless and unwanted. These experiences deeply shaped her personality instilling a sense of inferiority, meekness, and hopelessness that would follow her into adulthood.
Abilities
Gift: Dream-Sight
Miyo Kudou possesses Dream-Sight, a rare and powerful supernatural ability inherited from the Usuba bloodline. Unlike most Gifts, which are used in combat or against Grotesqueries, Dream-Sight is specialized in affecting the minds of other Gift-users. It is considered one of the most formidable Gifts due to its wide range of influence and depth.
Dream-Sight allows Miyo to enter the dreams of any sleeping person, including her own, and manipulate their visions. Through this ability, she can view events from the past and future, and in certain cases, even alter them. This power grants her a unique advantage in navigating complex emotional and psychic landscapes, making it exceptionally potent in dealings involving memory, emotion, and foresight.
To protect Miyo from exploitation, her mother, Sumi Usuba, sealed her Gift shortly after birth. As a result, Miyo grew up believing she was born without a Gift, a condition regarded as disgraceful among noble families. This misconception contributed heavily to the emotional and physical abuse she endured at the Saimori estate.
Following her departure from the Saimori household, the seal on her power gradually weakened, eventually allowing her Gift to awaken.
Techniques
-
Familiar Technique: After awakening her Dream-Sight ability, Miyo began formal training under the guidance of Hazuki Kudou and Arata Tsuruki to harness her powers more effectively. Although she is not capable of summoning familiars from nothing, with the aid of a specially modified amulet created by Kiyoka Kudou, she is able to activate paper familiars independently. This technique allows her to utilize magical constructs for surveillance or communication.
-
Sealing: In addition to Dream-Sight, Miyo possesses a latent sealing ability—another rare trait of the Usuba lineage. While at the Usuba estate, within the barrier of the family’s ancestral grounds, Miyo touches a sacred cherry blossom tree. Through this act, she successfully unseals her mother Sumi’s latent powers, awakening the full extent of her own abilities. This moment plays a crucial role in the unfolding conflict, as her powers hold the potential to bring an end to the Emperor’s tyrannical influence.
