Appearance

Tatara is a slender boy of average height with short brown hair and large expressive eyes. Early in the series, his posture is poor and his presence unremarkable, reflecting his lack of confidence. However, as he trains and matures as a dancer, Tatara’s physical presence becomes more refined, with improved posture, fluidity of movement, and a growing sense of poise.

When performing, Tatara wears traditional Latin or Standard ballroom outfits tailored to each competition, often styled to complement his partner’s attire.

Personality

Tatara is humble, hardworking, and introspective, with a strong desire to grow despite his initial insecurity. He often feels overwhelmed in the competitive world of dance but pushes himself beyond his limits out of respect for the art and for those who believe in him.

Though he starts off timid and submissive, especially around assertive personalities like Chinatsu Hiyama, Tatara gradually gains emotional resilience. He is empathetic and sensitive to others’ feelings, traits that become assets in the highly expressive world of ballroom dance. His sincerity, open heart, and ability to reflect emotion through movement become hallmarks of his style.

Role in the Story

  • Discovery of Dance
Tatara’s journey begins when he is taken to a dance studio by Sengoku and introduced to the sport of competitive ballroom dance. Awestruck by the elegance and strength on display, particularly from Shizuku Hanaoka, Tatara is inspired to try dancing himself. Despite his lack of experience, his natural adaptability and body awareness soon emerge.

  • Training and Competition
Tatara throws himself into rigorous training under Sengoku’s guidance. He faces early challenges, including imposter syndrome, lack of self-confidence, and frequent comparison to seasoned dancers like Kiyoharu Hyodo. However, through persistence and passion, he improves rapidly and gains recognition in the amateur circuit.

  • Partnership with Chinatsu
Tatara’s most defining arc begins when he is paired with Chinatsu Hiyama, a talented but headstrong dancer. However, through compromise and emotional growth, they develop deep mutual trust, ultimately becoming a powerful duo on the dance floor.

Over time, they develop a strong, if complex, bond built on trust, communication, and shared ambition. Chinatsu challenges Tatara to assert himself and evolve as a leader in their routines.

Kaname Sengoku
Tatara’s mentor and the first to introduce him to ballroom dance. Though flamboyant and sometimes harsh, Sengoku sees Tatara’s potential and pushes him to overcome self-doubt. He plays a pivotal role in Tatara’s transformation from a novice to a competitor.

Shizuku Hanaoka
One of Tatara’s earliest inspirations. Her grace and elegance leave a strong impression on Tatara, motivating him to pursue dance seriously. Though not directly involved in his training, Shizuku remains a symbol of excellence for him.

Kiyoharu Hyodo
A prodigious dancer and Shizuku’s original partner. Tatara initially views Kiyoharu as a rival and benchmark of greatness. Their interactions push Tatara to develop a unique style and identity instead of mimicking others.
