Midori Imai

Midori Imai (今井 みどり, Imai Midori) is one of the main characters in the anime series Shirobako. A close friend of Aoi Miyamori, she is an aspiring writer and the youngest member of their high school animation club, known as the “Donut Quintet.” Midori plays a key role in supporting the group’s journey through the anime industry and later pursues her own path in scriptwriting and research.

Appearance in Anime

During her time at Kaminoyama High School, Midori Imai was a member of the Animation Club alongside Aoi Miyamori, Ema Yasuhara, Shizuka Sakaki, and Misa Tōdō. Together, the five girls collaborated on a student-produced anime project, forming a close bond through their shared passion for animation. They made a heartfelt promise to one day reunite in Tokyo and create an original anime together sealing the vow with doughnuts, a recurring symbol of their friendship.

Following graduation, Midori enrolled in a post-secondary institution to further her education. She makes her professional debut in Episode 14 of Shirobako, when she begins working at Musashino Animation, contributing her research and writing skills to support the production team.

Appearance

Midori Imai is a young college student of average height with a slim build. She has black-purple hair styled in a high side-ponytail, secured with a white hair tie, and large grey-purple eyes that give her an expressive look.

Her typical outfit consists of a black and white pinstripe thigh-length dress, cinched at the waist with a brown buckle belt. She layers this with a mustard-colored blazer and pairs it with starry magenta tights, showcasing her playful and colorful fashion sense. Midori’s wardrobe often reflects her energetic personality, favoring bright and distinctive color combinations

Midori Imai is a kind-hearted, curious, and perceptive individual with a strong passion for learning. As the youngest member of her close-knit group of friends, she demonstrates both humility and determination, continually striving toward her ambitious goal of becoming a scriptwriter. Despite her age, she displays maturity through her thoughtfulness and eagerness to contribute, often looking to her friends for guidance and inspiration.

Driven by her dream of writing compelling scripts across various anime genres, Midori is always ready to lend a helping hand, offering support wherever she can. Her enthusiasm, warmth, and willingness to grow make her an integral part of the group’s shared journey in the anime industry.

Relationships

Aoi Miyamori
Midori shares a close friendship with Aoi Miyamori, having attended Kaminoyama High School together. The two also live in the same apartment complex. Alongside their friends, they made a heartfelt promise to one day create an original animated feature together.

Ema Yasuhara
Midori was classmates with Ema during high school and shares the same dream of working in the anime industry. Ema is one of the five friends involved in the promise to create their own animation.

Shizuka Sakaki
Shizuka and Midori were also members of the Kaminoyama High School Animation Club. They share a strong bond and were both part of the original promise to collaborate on an anime project in the future.

Misa Tōdō
Misa is another member of the original friend group. She and Midori worked together on their high school anime project and are connected through their shared passion for animation and creative work.

Kaori Miyamori
Midori has known Kaori, Aoi’s older sister, since high school. Their acquaintance stems from Midori’s close friendship with Aoi.

Trivia

    • As the youngest member of the Kaminoyama High School Animation Club, Midori graduated after the other four members of the group.
      • She currently attends a post-secondary institution in Tokyo, motivated by the promise she made with her friends to one day create an original animated feature.
      • Midori once looked after Kaori Miyamori, Aoi’s older sister, when she made an unexpected visit to Aoi’s apartment.
      • A fan of Russian literature, Midori has a particular fondness for Fyodor Dostoevsky. On one occasion, she admitted to pulling an all-nighter reading his works just before agreeing to hold Aoi’s apartment key despite it being nearly 10 a.m. Dostoevsky’s face appears as a decal on her jet in the Season 2 opening sequence.
      • Midori spent two days touring Tokyo with Kaori, only to realize the experience benefited her more than it did Kaori. She then suggested Kaori take control of the remaining plans before her departure from the city.
      • Demonstrating her dedication, Midori voluntarily researched the history of trains in Japan to assist Aoi with a project. Her efforts earned her the affectionate nickname “Diesel-san” from the staff at Musashino Animation.
