Ariane Glenys Maple

Ariane Glenys Maple (アリアン・グレニス・メープル, Arian Gurenisu Mēpuru), later known as Ariane Glenys Lalatoya (アリアン・グレニス・ララトイア, Arian Gurenisu Raratoia), is the main female protagonist and deuteragonist of the Skeleton Knight in Another World (Gaikotsu Kishi-sama, Tadaima Isekai e Odekakechū) series. A proud and skilled Dark Elf warrior, Ariane dedicates herself to the mission of locating and liberating her fellow elves who have been captured and enslaved by humans. This pursuit stems from a broken treaty between elves and humans, violated by the actions of the second prince, Dakares Ciciay Karlon Rhoden Vetran of the Rhoden Kingdom.

Appearance in Anime

Ariane is a strikingly beautiful Dark Elf with golden eyes and a flawless, light-purple complexion with an amethyst hue. She has long, snow-white hair that she typically ties into a ponytail, and her physique is notably well-defined, with long, slender legs, wide hips, and a prominent bust. Like other elves, Ariane possesses elongated, pointed ears, though hers are slightly shorter than those of her kin, a trait that subtly distinguishes her appearance. Despite her mature figure, she appears much younger than her actual age, a characteristic common to her race.

Her typical attire consists of maroon, corset-style leather armor paired with a matching skirt and stockings, all of which emphasize both her combat readiness and her figure. She often wears a dark-colored cloak and carries a silver sword, which she wields with skill. Her outfit reveals a notable amount of cleavage, partly due to the size of her chest and the design of her armor.

Personality

Ariane is a strong-willed and determined individual, fully committed to her mission of rescuing enslaved elves regardless of the danger involved. Her fierce dedication, however, is sometimes overshadowed by her impulsiveness and short temper. She has a tendency to act without fully assessing a situation, which occasionally places herself and her allies at risk. This trait is most evident during her first encounter with Arc, when her reckless attempt to free captured elven children nearly resulted in tragedy before Arc intervened.

Having grown up witnessing the cruelty inflicted upon her people, Ariane harbored a deep resentment toward humans. However, her perception begins to shift after meeting Arc, whose kindness and sense of justice force her to reconsider her assumptions. Though she grows more open-minded, her distrust is not completely erased as seen when she allows her allies Sena and Uhna to execute Tryton du Diento without hesitation.

Despite her strong exterior, Ariane is compassionate, fiercely loyal to her friends, and quick to defend them from insult or harm. Her protective instincts are shown during the rescue of Doran Village, where she becomes enraged when an elder insults Chiyome only calming down when her father intervenes. Over time, she develops a close bond with Arc, at first proclaiming herself his “guardian” to keep an eye on him. As their adventures progress, it becomes increasingly apparent that she sees him as more than a mere companion. Ariane often becomes visibly jealous when Arc interacts with other women and reacts possessively, such as when Hanzo of the Jinshin clan offers Arc a position in their ranks. Even Arc, despite his formidable strength, is not immune to the intimidating sharpness of her glare.

As their partnership deepens, Ariane grows more attuned to Arc’s personality. She becomes able to read his thoughts and emotions despite the barrier of his full armor and skeletal appearance. Notably, Ariane has a low tolerance for alcohol, often becoming tipsy quite easily when drinking.

Background

Ariane hails from a distinguished family within the elven nation. Her father, Dillan, is a high-ranking Elf and one of the elders of the village of Lalatoya. Her mother, Glenys, is a Dark Elf reputed to be one of the finest swordswomen in the entire elven realm, known for her quiet yet formidable skill. Ariane’s older sister, Eevin, is also recognized as one of Maple’s strongest soldiers, further solidifying the family’s reputation for strength and honor.

Raised in this prestigious lineage, Ariane naturally grew into a proud and capable warrior herself. Her upbringing in such a martial and disciplined environment strongly influenced her commitment to protecting her people and fueled her desire to liberate enslaved elves, a mission that becomes central to her role in the story.

Abilities and Powers

Ariane is a highly skilled combatant, particularly proficient in swordsmanship, a talent likely inherited from her mother, Glenys. Her skill with the blade makes her a formidable opponent in close combat. In addition to her physical abilities, Ariane is adept in Spirit Magic, with a strong command over the elements of fire, earth, and wind. Her combination of martial prowess and magical versatility makes her a well-rounded and powerful warrior, capable of adapting to a wide range of combat situations.

Equipment

Ariane is typically armed with a silver sword, her primary weapon during much of her journey. She also wears armor crafted from Ground Dragon leather, which offers a balance of flexibility and durability suited for both melee and magic combat.

Later in the series, Arc gifts her the Sword of the Lion King, a powerful weapon symbolizing his trust and admiration for her. However, during a confrontation with a cardinal of the Hilk Church, Ariane’s sword is broken. In response, Arc secretly arranges for a replacement. Collaborating with Glenys, Ariane’s mother, Arc provides rare materials scales from a Dragon Lord and decayed wood from the Tree King to forge a new blade. Glenys contacts a skilled blacksmith to complete the process. Upon Arc’s return from training, he presents the newly forged weapon to Ariane.

Ariane is immediately struck by the sword’s overwhelming magical presence, noting it surpasses her previous weapons in quality and power. Glenys remarks that if Ariane were to sell the sword to humans, she could live a life of luxury even by elven standards. Unnerved by its value, Ariane initially tries to return it, but Arc refuses, insisting she keep it. The sword becomes one of her most treasured possessions and a testament to their growing bond.

Relationships

Arc
Arc is Ariane’s closest companion throughout the series. Their first meeting occurs when Ariane spots him emerging from a cave used to imprison enslaved elven children. Initially cautious and distrustful due to his concealed identity and imposing armor, her skepticism fades upon seeing Ponta, a spirit beast, traveling peacefully with him. She further softens after witnessing Arc free the enslaved children from their collars and heal them with magic. Impressed by his actions, Ariane offers to work with him to rescue more of her people an offer Arc readily accepts. When questioned by her allies about trusting a seemingly human outsider, Ariane confidently vouches for him.

As they travel together, Ariane develops a high opinion of Arc’s strength, once remarking that only a dragon could restrain him. However, she also finds him exasperating due to his tendency to act impulsively or foolishly. Incidents such as summoning a powerful elemental spirit to fight a Hydra resulting in the destruction of a nearby town or accidentally stepping on a sleeping Dragon Lord and triggering a battle, have caused Ariane to label Arc a walking disaster. Despite her frequent criticisms, Ariane clearly cares for him. She remained by his side for several days when he became comatose after temporarily lifting his curse, and was deeply concerned upon noticing signs of homesickness and depression in him.

Various interactions suggest that Ariane harbors romantic feelings for Arc, though she rarely expresses them openly. In the light novel, she is often harsh toward him, making biting remarks and denying their closeness, unlike her more open friendship with Chiyome. However, her protectiveness, jealousy, and emotional concern strongly hint at deeper affection.

Chiyome
Chiyome is a close ally of Ariane, and the two work well together, particularly in combat. Ariane finds Chiyome endearing, especially because of her fluffy tail and animal-like features, and admires her shared commitment to freeing their respective peoples from slavery. Their mutual respect and teamwork make them a formidable pair in battle.

Ponta
Ponta, Arc’s spirit companion, is another character Ariane adores. She is fond of the creature and frequently tries to gain her attention, although she is often disappointed that Ponta clearly favors Arc. Ariane enjoys petting Ponta, especially for her soft fur, and their interactions often offer brief moments of lightheartedness.

Eevin Glenys Maple
Eevin Glenys Maple, Ariane’s older sister, is someone she greatly admires but also feels overshadowed by. Eevin is widely regarded as the strongest warrior in Maple and a prodigy, which contributes to Ariane’s own feelings of inadequacy. When Ariane struggles with missions, she often compares herself to her sister, believing Eevin would have succeeded where she failed. However, Ariane is also bewildered by Eevin’s overprotective and clingy behavior, especially given her sister’s usually intense and battle-driven personality. Ariane is visibly shocked when she discovers Eevin intends to marry a farmer, a stark contrast to the fierce warrior image she had of her.

Trivia

    • Ariane is known to be a lightweight when it comes to alcohol. After only two sips, she became heavily intoxicated and extremely aggressive. Following this incident, Arc promised never to let her drink again. Her birthday is listed as March 24.
      • Despite her reputation as a fierce warrior with a short temper, Ariane has a soft side particularly for cute things like Ponta and for young children, whom she treats with care and gentleness. She is especially fond of petting Ponta, drawn to the spirit creature’s soft fur and playful nature.
      • In the light novel, Arc acquires the Sword of the Lion King by stealing it from a noble’s mansion in Diento and later gives it to Ariane as a gift after rescuing Sena and Uhna. This event does not occur in the manga or anime adaptations.
      • Though she is accustomed to traveling on foot through forested regions, Ariane becomes uneasy when using animal-based transportation. She is particularly uncomfortable riding creatures such as the driftpus, a form of large beast mount.
      • Interestingly, while elves are traditionally depicted as master archers, Ariane is an exception. Due to the size of her chest, she struggles with using a bow effectively a humorous but canonical detail noted within the series.
