Himeko Momokino (桃木野 姫子, Momokino Himeko) is a supporting character in the Citrus anime and manga series. She serves as the vice president of the student council at Aihara Academy and is the childhood friend and close confidante of Mei Aihara, the student council president.
Known for her sharp tongue, strong sense of loyalty, and protective nature, Himeko often acts as Mei’s guardian and enforcer, especially when it comes to warding off people she views as threats to Mei’s well-being particularly Yuzu Aihara. Though her relationship with Mei becomes strained over time, her devotion to her friend remains constant, and she plays a key role in Mei’s personal growth and relationships throughout the series.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Himeko Momokino is known for her stubborn, prideful, and rule-abiding personality. She strongly disapproves of anyone who disregards school regulations, often directing her criticism at students like Yuzu Aihara and Harumi Taniguchi, whom she views as unruly and disruptive. Despite her dedication to formality and structure within the school environment, Himeko reveals a different side of herself outside of school, where she frequently wears Lolita fashion, suggesting a personal love for elegance and self-expression that contrasts her rigid school persona.
Himeko is extremely protective and possessive of Mei Aihara, often showing intense jealousy whenever someone, especially Yuzu, gets too close to her. This behavior fuels the widespread belief that Himeko harbors romantic feelings for Mei, though she never openly admits them. She regularly emphasizes her childhood friendship with Mei as a way to assert her closeness, using it to establish her position in Mei’s life.
Despite her overbearing tendencies, Himeko genuinely cares for Mei’s well-being. Over time, she begrudgingly accepts Yuzu’s feelings for Mei, recognizing that her friend’s happiness may lie outside of their shared past. However, she continues to voice her disapproval of Yuzu’s conduct, especially her frequent disregard for school rules.
Himeko also shows signs of being easily frightened, as seen when she clings to Mei in fear after hearing Suzuran’s screech, though she attempts to cover up her reaction by claiming she was trying to protect Mei. This mix of pride, protectiveness, and underlying vulnerability adds depth to her character, revealing that her strictness is often a mask for deeper emotional insecurity and loyalty.
Appearance
Himeko Momokino is a teenage girl of short stature with a distinctive and elegant appearance. In the manga, she has plum-colored hair styled into two short twin ringlets, while in the anime adaptation, her hair appears black. She has magenta eyes in the manga and dark purple eyes in the anime. One of her most noticeable and defining features is her pair of thick, bushy eyebrows, which stand out prominently and add to her strong-willed expression.
While attending school, Himeko is seen wearing the standard Aihara Academy uniform, kept neat and formal. However, outside of school, she expresses a very different fashion sense often dressing in extravagant dresses and flashy, over-the-top outfits, embracing a dramatic and eye-catching style. She is rarely seen in casual clothing, reflecting her flair for elegance and desire to maintain a refined appearance at all times.
Relationships
Mei Aihara
Himeko Momokino and Mei Aihara have been childhood friends since elementary school, sharing a close bond in their early years. However, after Mei’s father left, Mei became emotionally withdrawn and began to distance herself from Himeko, gradually seeing her more as a nuisance than a friend. Despite this shift, Himeko remained deeply attached to Mei and grew possessive and jealous, especially after Yuzu Aihara entered Mei’s life.
With Yuzu’s help, Himeko and Mei were eventually able to rekindle their friendship, finding common ground once again. Himeko harbors romantic feelings for Mei, but she seems to understand that Mei is in love with Yuzu. When Matsuri casually mentioned Mei and Yuzu’s relationship, Himeko showed no surprise, indicating she was already aware. Despite her jealousy, Himeko ultimately accepts Yuzu as Mei’s partner, encouraging Mei to trust in her relationship with Yuzu because, above all, she wants Mei to be happy.
Yuzu Aihara
Himeko initially dislikes Yuzu, viewing her as an unruly and disruptive influence particularly due to her closeness with Mei. The two become rivals for Mei’s affection, with Himeko resenting Yuzu’s disregard for school rules and her bold personality. However, over time, Himeko’s antagonism lessens, and while she still finds Yuzu’s behavior frustrating, she becomes more tolerant of her presence.
Himeko eventually shows genuine concern for Yuzu, such as when Mitsuko attempts to force Yuzu into a student council election against Mei. She also steps in when she notices Yuzu pretending to be happy in front of others, despite being hurt by Mei’s actions. Himeko even plays a role in helping Yuzu cancel Mei’s arranged marriage, showing that, despite their rivalry, she respects Yuzu’s feelings and wants what’s best for Mei.
Harumi Taniguchi
Much like with Yuzu, Himeko finds Harumi’s laid-back and teasing nature irritating. Harumi, in contrast, enjoys poking fun at Himeko, often treating her stern attitude with amusement. Despite their clashing personalities, the two eventually begin to get along better as the series progresses, developing a more amicable and occasionally humorous dynamic.
Kayo Maruta
Himeko and Kayo Maruta both serve as Vice Presidents under Mei’s student council leadership. While not much is revealed about the depth of their relationship, the two appear to be on good terms, cooperating professionally in their roles within the council.
Etymology
The given name Himeko (姫子) is composed of 姫 (hime), meaning “princess” or “young lady of noble birth,” and 子 (ko), meaning “child.” The name evokes a sense of elegance and refinement, which contrasts with Himeko’s more direct and sometimes sharp personality.
Her surname, Momokino (桃木野), is made up of 桃 (momo), meaning “peach,” 木 (ki), meaning “tree” or “wood,” and 野 (no), meaning “field” or “wilderness.” The combination suggests a natural, serene setting a peach tree field perhaps reflecting her connection to the past and her history with Mei.
