Chiyo Sakura (佐倉 千代, Sakura Chiyo), is the main female protagonist of the anime and manga series Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun). A cheerful and determined high school student at Roman Academy, Chiyo is a devoted member of the school’s Art Club and harbors a strong romantic affection for her classmate Umetarou Nozaki, a tall and stoic boy who, unbeknownst to most students, is a famous shōjo manga artist publishing under the pen name Sakiko Yumeno. After confessing her feelings and being misunderstood, she ends up becoming Nozaki’s manga assistant, specifically in charge of inking betas (filling in black areas in the manga).
Chiyo’s vibrant personality, genuine charm, and comedic misadventures form the emotional and comedic heart of the series. While her initial goal is to get closer to Nozaki romantically, she finds herself pulled deeper into the chaotic world of manga production and the eccentric group of students who orbit Nozaki’s life. From navigating odd friendship dynamics to enduring romantic misfires, Chiyo remains one of the most lovable and relatable characters in romantic comedy anime.
Background

Appearance in anime
Chiyo is a second-year student at Roman Academy and a member of the Art Club, where she hones her drawing skills. She lives with her family and has a younger brother named Towa Sakura, although he plays a very minor role in the story. Chiyo’s life takes an unexpected turn when she gathers the courage to confess her feelings to her longtime crush, Umetarou Nozaki. However, due to Nozaki’s obliviousness, he mistakes her confession for a job application and hands her an autograph instead.
As a result, Chiyo begins assisting Nozaki with his manga, starting with inking tasks and eventually learning more about the production process. Though initially confused by Nozaki’s behavior, Chiyo remains persistent and hopeful, continuing to support him while subtly trying to get closer to him emotionally.
Appearance
Chiyo is a petite and adorable teenage girl with a distinct and instantly recognizable look. She has bright orange hair tied into twin tails with large white bows, golden-brown eyes, and a soft, expressive face. Her school uniform consists of the standard Roman Academy attire: a gray blazer, white blouse, plaid skirt, and red bow tie.
Her physical expressions often mirror her emotional state ranging from cheerful enthusiasm to awkward embarrassment. Her bright hair and oversized bows are used frequently as visual gags in the anime, making her one of the most iconic designs in the series.
Personality
Chiyo is cheerful, kind, optimistic, and incredibly patient. She maintains a consistently upbeat attitude despite being caught in misunderstandings, comedic failures, and unreciprocated love. While she may appear gentle and naïve on the surface, Chiyo is also highly observant, emotionally intelligent, and capable of standing up for herself when necessary.
She is deeply romantic and dreams of a sincere, shōjo-manga-style love story with Nozaki, but quickly realizes that real-life romance especially with someone as dense as Nozaki is far more complicated. Despite her many failed attempts at deepening their relationship, she continues to support him in both his personal life and manga work. Her love is genuine and selfless, making her a refreshing and relatable romantic heroine.
Role in the Story
-
Becoming Nozaki’s Assistant
Chiyo’s role begins when she confesses to Nozaki, only for him to misinterpret her feelings and hand her an autograph. He then invites her to assist with his manga, not realizing her true intentions. Chiyo accepts the position as a beta artist, hoping that working closely with him will bring them closer together emotionally. -
Navigating the Chaos of Manga and School Life
As part of Nozaki’s inner circle, Chiyo becomes involved in many bizarre and hilarious situations. Whether it’s brainstorming story ideas, observing real-life “romantic” behavior for inspiration, or interacting with the other strange cast members, Chiyo remains the calm and grounded presence in an otherwise chaotic ensemble. Her reactions often serve as the audience’s point of view, highlighting the absurdity of the situations around her. -
Her Unwavering Crush
Despite her many failed attempts at romantic progress, Chiyo remains hopeful and sincere in her affection for Nozaki. She tries different strategies to express her feelings some subtle, some bold but Nozaki remains blissfully unaware of her true intentions. Their dynamic is one of the central comedic and emotional threads of the series.
Relationships
Umetarou Nozaki
Chiyo’s love interest and the male protagonist. Though he remains oblivious to her feelings, Chiyo genuinely admires Nozaki’s creativity, work ethic, and kindness. Their relationship is marked by comedic misunderstandings, quiet moments of closeness, and a heartfelt connection that grows through shared experiences.
Yuzuki Seo
Chiyo’s classmate and one of her closest friends. Seo is brash, tone-deaf, and socially oblivious, which often puts Chiyo in the role of managing or apologizing for her antics. Despite Seo’s wild behavior, Chiyo cares deeply for her and values their friendship.
Mikoshiba Mikoto (“Mikorin”)
One of Nozaki’s friends and another assistant. Chiyo enjoys teasing Mikorin for his flirtatious yet easily embarrassed personality, but they share a strong platonic friendship. She respects his artistic talent and often encourages him when he doubts himself.
Towa Sakura
Chiyo’s younger brother. While he is not a central character, he is briefly mentioned and plays a minimal role in the story.
