Appearance in anime

Soma Schicksal was born in Fenrir’s Far East Branch as the son of Johannes von Schicksal, the head of Fenrir, and Aisha Gauche, a scientist instrumental in the creation of the Aragami. He was the first successful God Eater, infused with Bias Factor in an experiment conducted by his father. This process, while making him a powerful warrior, also left him with enhanced Aragami-like traits, isolating him from others.

Due to his overwhelming strength and the high mortality rate of missions he participates in, Soma became known as the “Grim Reaper” among his peers, reinforcing his belief that he brings misfortune to those around him. This caused him to become emotionally detached and reserved, often working alone to minimize the risk to his comrades.

Despite his cold demeanor, he continues to fight tirelessly against the Aragami, carrying the burden of his origins and seeking redemption for his past.

Appearance

Soma has a tall, muscular build, with silver-white hair and piercing gray eyes that reflect his detached personality. His combat attire consists of black and red military-style clothing, suited for high-mobility combat. Unlike some of his teammates, he does not wear extravagant accessories, reflecting his practical and no-nonsense approach to battle.

In God Eater 2, his outfit becomes more tactical and rugged, emphasizing his transition to a more independent warrior within Cradle.

Personality

Soma is stoic, reserved, and socially withdrawn, often keeping his distance from others due to his reputation as the Grim Reaper. He rarely expresses emotion and tends to speak in a blunt, monotone manner, making him appear cold and unapproachable. However, beneath his hardened exterior, he is deeply loyal, self-sacrificing, and protective of those he fights alongside.

His harsh upbringing and knowledge of his father’s experiments left him with a deep sense of guilt and self-loathing, believing that he is an unnatural existence who endangers those around him. However, as the series progresses, he begins to accept companionship and trust in his comrades, showing subtle signs of warmth and understanding.

Soma values actions over words, rarely engaging in unnecessary conversation but demonstrating his loyalty through his willingness to protect his team at any cost.

Role in the Story

  • God Eater Burst
Soma serves as one of the most experienced members of the 1st Unit, guiding the Protagonist through missions despite his preference for working alone. While initially distant and uncooperative, he slowly begins to open up to his comrades, particularly after key events that challenge his solitary nature. Throughout the story, Soma grapples with his origins, uncovering his father’s twisted experiments and the role his mother played in the creation of the Aragami. He struggles with the guilt of being Fenrir’s first experimental God Eater, believing that his existence is a mistake. Despite his inner turmoil, he proves to be a reliable and powerful ally, displaying unmatched combat prowess and an unwavering determination to protect humanity.

  • God Eater 2
In God Eater 2, Soma leaves Fenrir and joins Cradle, a traveling branch dedicated to protecting survivors outside the organization’s jurisdiction. Alongside Lindow Amamiya, Alisa Ilinichina Amiella, and the Protagonist, he engages in high-risk missions against new Aragami threats. His character undergoes subtle but significant growth, as he begins to value teamwork and trust in his allies more than before. Though still reserved, he develops a deeper sense of purpose, fighting not just out of obligation but to pave a future where humanity can survive without fear of the Aragami.

Relationships

Lindow Amamiya
Lindow is one of the few people Soma respects, serving as a mentor figure despite Soma’s reluctance to accept guidance. Lindow’s easygoing and charismatic nature contrasts with Soma’s brooding personality, but Lindow persistently encourages Soma to believe in himself and trust others.

Alisa Ilinichina Amiella
Alisa and Soma initially have a strained relationship, as both carry deep emotional scars from their pasts. However, as they fight together, they develop a mutual respect, working efficiently as part of Cradle.

Johannes von Schicksal (Father)
Soma harbors deep resentment toward his father for using him as a test subject in Fenrir’s Bias Factor experiments. He blames Johannes for his unnatural existence and refuses to acknowledge him as a parent. This conflict serves as one of Soma’s main motivations in the story.

Aisha Gauche (Mother)
Soma’s relationship with his mother is complex. Though Aisha died in the Aragami experiments, Soma does not resent her the way he resents Johannes. He occasionally speaks of her with a hint of longing, showing that despite everything, he still holds some affection for her.
