Airi Sakura

Airi Sakura (佐倉 愛里, Sakura Airi) is one of the heroines in the Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e (Classroom of the Elite) series. She first appears as a student of Class 1-D at Advanced Nurturing High School, where she is initially portrayed as a shy and introverted girl with a reserved nature. Despite her quiet demeanor, Airi harbors a past as a former gravure idol under the stage name Shizuku (雫). Her character undergoes significant development as she becomes more involved with her classmates and gradually gains confidence in herself.

Appearance in Anime

Airi Sakura is a teenage girl of average height with waist-length pink hair, styled into low twin pigtails with swept bangs on the left side. She has gradient blue eyes and a well-endowed figure, often compared to that of Honami Ichinose. Due to her reserved nature, she does not exude the same level of confidence as Honami, but if she did, it is suggested that her popularity could have been on par with hers. Airi is considered highly attractive, as she has received romantic advances from both classmates and even a sales clerk.

One of Airi’s defining features is her red glasses, though it is later revealed by Kiyotaka Ayanokōji that they are fake and merely a part of her attempt to blend into the background. Following an incident where she was assaulted, she chose to abandon her glasses as a symbol of revealing her true self, though she still keeps them.

Outside of school, Airi’s casual attire consists of a white shirt with red sleeves and blue pants. She has also been seen wearing a rash guard swimsuit during poolside activities.

Personality

Airi Sakura is known for her shy and quiet nature, often preferring to remain in the background rather than actively engaging with others. Her introverted personality makes it difficult for her to speak up in tense situations, as seen when she hesitates to testify about Ken Sudō’s altercation with C-Class students or when she struggles to discuss the unwanted advances of a sales clerk while getting her camera repaired. Despite her social anxiety, which is particularly evident when she feels uncomfortable around her classmates at the pool, Airi possesses a remarkable ability to read people. This is demonstrated when she becomes one of the few individuals to recognize Kikyō Kushida’s hidden malicious personality, despite Kushida’s outwardly friendly attitude.

One of Airi’s favorite hobbies is taking self-portraits, where she always appears cheerful. However, this is not out of narcissism, but rather stems from her appreciation of the positive attention and praise she receives from anonymous strangers online. She also develops a strong admiration for Kiyotaka Ayanokōji, often expressing enthusiasm for photographing him and praising his composed demeanor. Her digital camera is one of her most treasured possessions, and she becomes deeply upset when it is damaged after an accident.

A turning point in Airi’s character occurs after she experiences a traumatic encounter with a stalker and is subsequently rescued by Kiyotaka. This event motivates her to reinvent herself, choosing to abandon her glasses as a symbolic step toward embracing her true self. Rather than shying away from attention, she begins to accept and adapt to the recognition she naturally attracts, showing growth in her confidence.

Background

Before the attempted assault incident, Airi Sakura was a gravure idol, gaining a significant online following through her photos. To protect her identity and avoid being recognized in public, she adopted the alias Shizuku (雫) as her internet persona. She also took additional measures to conceal her real identity, including wearing fake glasses and styling her hair differently.

Despite her popularity, Airi eventually withdrew from the gravure industry, seeking a more low-profile life as a student at Advanced Nurturing High School. However, remnants of her past still influence her experiences, as she struggles with social anxiety and self-confidence. Her transformation into a reserved and timid individual contrasts with her previous persona, highlighting the gap between her online and real-life identities.

Abilities

Airi Sakura is a cooperative and dependable student, despite her below-average academic performance. While she struggles with her studies, she is willing to support her classmates, particularly when working alongside those she trusts. This was evident during the special summer exam, where she volunteered as one of the island reconnoiters, a role that required surveying the island—a particularly challenging task given her reserved personality and lack of physical prowess.

Due to her low academic standing, Airi joined the Ayanokōji Group during the Paper Shuffle special exam to secure support and avoid expulsion. In addition to her academic struggles, she also ranks low in physical ability. During the Sports Festival, she competed in the girls’ 100-meter dash, finishing second to last—a small improvement from her consistent last place finishes during practice races. Despite her weaknesses in academics and athletics, Airi demonstrates a willingness to contribute to group efforts, showing growth in both confidence and perseverance.

Etymology

The name Airi (愛里) is composed of the kanji 愛 (ai), meaning “love” or “affection”, and 里 (ri), meaning “village”. Together, her name can be interpreted as “beloved village” or “affectionate home”, reflecting warmth and familiarity.

Her surname, Sakura (佐倉), consists of the kanji 佐 (sa), meaning “help” or “aid”, and 倉 (kura), which carries meanings such as “warehouse,” “storehouse,” “treasury,” or “repository”. The combination of these kanji may suggest a guardian or protector of valuable things, symbolizing preservation and care.
