Miyo Sasaki (笹木 美代, Sasaki Miyo), also known by her nickname Muge, is the main protagonist of Nakitai Watashi wa Neko wo Kaburu (A Whisker Away). She possesses the ability to transform into a cat using a mystical Cat Mask, allowing her to interact with her crush, Kento Hinode, in a form he unknowingly adores. In her feline form, she is known as Tarō (太郎, Tarō).
Background

Appearance as Taro
Miyo was born into a middle-class family in Tokoname. She grew up resenting her biological mother after she left, and she struggled to accept her stepmother, feeling as though she was attempting to replace her mother. Her strained family dynamics made her feel abandoned, which caused her to seek solace in her life as Tarō.
Her eventual disappearance as a human causes her family to realize their deep concern for her, leading to a shift in their behavior as they become more attentive and caring.

Appearance
Miyo Sasaki is a charming young girl of average height, characterized by her slightly messy light brown hair, which she occasionally ties up in a loose ponytail. Her casual and somewhat unkempt appearance reflects her carefree personality. She is most commonly seen in her school uniform, though she wears it in a disheveled manner, often leaving part of her polo shirt untucked from her skirt.
In her feline form, Miyo transforms into a white-furred cat with striking bright blue eyes. She has light brown fur markings around her nose and at the tip of her tail, giving her a distinctive and endearing appearance.
Personality
Miyo outwardly presents herself as a cheerful and energetic girl with a bold, rambunctious personality. She is expressive, often speaking her mind without hesitation, and shows persistent determination in her pursuit of Kento. However, beneath her lively attitude, she hides deep emotional wounds.
She struggles with feelings of abandonment due to her strained relationship with her parents, particularly her biological mother. She was teased during her elementary school years, which further contributed to her emotional turmoil. These hidden insecurities led her to encounter the Mask Seller, a mysterious figure who grants her the ability to transform into a cat. She begins to use this transformation as an escape from her personal struggles, viewing those she harbors negative feelings toward as mere “scarecrows” in her life.
Relationships
Kento Hinode
“Hinode Sunshine Attack”
One morning on her way to class, Miyo enthusiastically greeted Kento by unexpectedly charging at him barefoot and knocking into him from behind. With a bright demeanor, she cheerfully announced the name of her playful gesture, referring to it as the “Hinode Sunshine Attack.”
The Letter
Determined to express her feelings, Miyo spent an entire night writing a heartfelt letter to Kento, pouring all her emotions into it. The next day, she approached him at school with the intention of delivering the letter, feeling resolute in her decision. However, before she could do so, two classmates, Shōta Bannai and Ayumu Niibori, snatched the letter from her hands.
As Niibori hesitated about reading it aloud, Bannai, with a mocking expression, proceeded to open the letter. He ridiculed Miyo for her emotional writing, calling her “pathetic” and taunting her as “desperate” for Kento. As he read the letter out loud, Miyo attempted to reclaim it but failed. The situation escalated when Kento finally took the letter from Bannai, only to react with disappointment. He coldly gazed at Miyo, clearly embarrassed by the ordeal.
As Bannai continued to tease her, chanting “confession time,” Miyo, overwhelmed with emotions, reacted impulsively by pushing over the teacher’s desk onto him. Desperate for Kento’s acceptance, she looked toward him, but he crumpled up the letter and dismissed her by saying he disliked pushy people. His words telling her that he hated her devastated Miyo, causing her to tear up and flee, with her friend Yoriko running after her.
