Karako Koshio (興緒 唐子, Koshio Karako), also known by her alias Game Fowl, is a Deadman and the former second-in-command of Scar Chain, a resistance faction within Deadman Wonderland. Deeply devoted to Nagi Kengamine, her primary motivation for joining Scar Chain was to fight for his cause and help bring an end to the prison’s corrupt system.
Alongside Nagi, Karako played a crucial role in orchestrating a large-scale prisoner escape. Although the mission faced numerous obstacles, she and several Scar Chain members successfully escaped. Following her release, Karako exposed the dark secrets of Deadman Wonderland to the public, ultimately leading to the prison’s shutdown. However, after its closure, she took on a new mission, reuniting the surviving Deadmen to infiltrate Deadman Wonderland once more.
Background

Appearance in Anime
Before her imprisonment in Deadman Wonderland, Karako Koshio worked as a nurse.
Upon entering the prison, she became known as the ruthless Game Fowl, a fearsome Deadman who earned a reputation for her victories in Carnival Corpse, the deadly gladiatorial battles among Deadmen. It was during this time that she encountered Nagi Kengamine, who approached her with kindness, referring to her as his friend and complimenting the pleasant sound of her bell. His words resonated with her, leading to a deep bond between them.
Together, Karako and Nagi later founded Scar Chain, a resistance movement dedicated to overthrowing Deadman Wonderland’s corrupt system and liberating its inmates. In the anime adaptation, Scar Chain had already been established by the time of her introduction, with Nagi appointing Karako as his second-in-command.
One significant moment in their relationship occurred when Nagi showed Karako a locket that he claimed contained a picture of his child. Though she noticed that the locket was empty, she chose to pretend otherwise, reassuring him by saying that his daughter resembled him. Over time, Karako developed deep feelings for Nagi, which became a driving force behind her commitment to Scar Chain and their fight for freedom.
Appearance
Karako Koshio is an attractive, dark-skinned woman with short, curly white hair that has a silver tint. Her striking golden-honey eyes contrast with her complexion, giving her a distinctive appearance. She possesses a slim yet well-toned and curvaceous figure, reflecting her physical strength and agility.
Her attire has an Indian-inspired aesthetic, with her most common outfit consisting of tight-fitting pants paired with a floral-print top that exposes her arms and midriff. A defining feature of her appearance is the small, eggplant-shaped bell she always wears around her neck. This accessory holds sentimental value and is closely tied to her connection with Nagi Kengamine.
In a flashback to her first meeting with Nagi, Karako is depicted wearing a black Japanese kimono paired with black leggings, a stark contrast to her usual attire in Deadman Wonderland.
Personality
Karako Koshio is characterized by her toughness and resilience, traits that allowed her to survive the brutal conditions of Deadman Wonderland and establish herself as a formidable Deadman. Her strength and determination earned her a fearsome reputation, ultimately leading to her recruitment into Scar Chain, where she became a trusted second-in-command.
Despite her hardened exterior, Karako is deeply compassionate and caring, a quality likely influenced by her past profession as a nurse. She consistently prioritizes the well-being of her comrades, offering support and protection to those in Scar Chain, with a particular focus on Nagi Kengamine. Her loyalty to him goes beyond their shared mission, as she developed genuine feelings for him over time, further fueling her dedication to the cause.
Abilities
Martial Arts
Unlike many other Deadmen, Karako Koshio was already a skilled fighter before acquiring her Branch of Sin. She possesses formidable hand-to-hand combat abilities, utilizing an unnamed martial arts style that she seamlessly integrates with her blood-based techniques. Her proficiency in close combat makes her a dangerous opponent, even without relying on her Deadman abilities.
Branch of Sin
As a Deadman, Karako has the ability to manipulate her blood externally, a power known as the Branch of Sin. Her unique application of this ability enhances her physical combat skills, making her an exceptional fighter.
Fists of Blood (血の拳, Chi no Kobushi)
Karako’s Branch of Sin, Fists of Blood, allows her to envelop her fists and feet in hardened blood, significantly increasing her offensive and defensive capabilities. In certain situations, she can extend this ability to reinforce her entire body, providing additional protection against attacks.
She can also concentrate a larger quantity of blood around her hands, forming rock-like gauntlets that amplify the power of her strikes, enabling her to deal devastating blows. Additionally, Karako has demonstrated the ability to use her Branch of Sin for medical purposes, as seen when she sealed a wound after being stabbed by Genkaku.
Her ability was later acquired by Toto Sakigami, who expanded upon its potential. Through Fists of Blood, Toto displayed the capability to reconnect severed limbs by coating them with a layer of hardened blood, maintaining full control of the reattached body parts while halting further bleeding.
