Hibana Daida (橙 火花, Daida Hibana) was a member of the Undertakers, a special enforcement group within Deadman Wonderland. She held the position of the Third Squad Leader, overseeing operations against Deadmen and ensuring the suppression of their Branch of Sin abilities. Known for her sadistic tendencies and obsession with order, Hibana played a significant role in maintaining the Undertakers’ brutal authority within the prison.
Background

Appearance in Anime
Approximately four years before the events of Deadman Wonderland, Hibana Daida endured relentless abuse from her mother from the day she was born. Her mother justified this mistreatment by claiming it was necessary to shape Hibana into a “good girl.” This harsh upbringing deeply influenced Hibana’s perception of discipline and punishment.
At a young age, Hibana displayed extreme violent tendencies. When some of her kindergarten classmates flipped her skirt, she responded by torturing and killing them. In the anime adaptation, this act was escalated to the mass murder of her entire class. Upon her arrest, she showed no remorse, simply stating that her victims had done something bad and, therefore, deserved to be punished. Her cold justification for the murders led the media to label her as “Punishment.”
Following her arrest, Hibana was sent to Deadman Wonderland, where she was recruited and trained as an Undertaker, specializing in neutralizing Deadmen. Additionally, she later revealed that she was responsible for her mother’s death, stating, “She taught me so well, I taught her right back,” implying that she had subjected her mother to the same torture she once endured.
Appearance
Hibana Daida is a young girl of exceptionally short stature due to her age. She has striking light baby blue eyes that appear unnervingly wide, giving her an eerie and intense expression. Her blonde hair is neatly pulled back and secured with multiple red ribbons, while distinct sideburns stick out from the sides of her face.
Her outfit consists of a pink sleeveless dress with a white collar, paired with matching pink arm warmers. She completes her look with rubber boots, adding to her unusual yet childlike appearance. Despite her seemingly innocent attire, her unsettling demeanor and violent nature contrast sharply with her youthful appearance.
Personality
Despite her young age, Hibana Daida is among the most sadistic and twisted individuals in Deadman Wonderland. She possesses a deeply warped sense of justice, shaped by years of abuse, and takes pleasure in torturing others, an act she refers to as “punishment.” Hibana believes that maintaining proper manners and etiquette defines a “good girl” and sees herself as morally upright as long as she behaves like a lady and performs well academically, regardless of her brutal actions.
Her ideology aligns with the belief that “the end justifies the means,” as she feels no remorse for her violent methods so long as they serve her definition of justice. However, despite her unwavering confidence in her own righteousness, her resolve is not absolute. After witnessing the sheer power and brutality of Genkaku and Nagi, she experiences fear for the first time and ultimately decides to flee, rejecting further involvement in their conflicts.
Abilities and Equipment
Enhanced Strength
Despite her small stature, Hibana Daida possesses remarkable physical strength. She is capable of wielding a large, heavy sword with ease, showing little to no signs of strain even when using it single-handedly. Her strength is particularly notable when compared to Rokuro Bundō, who struggled to lift the same weapon. Hibana wields her sword with exceptional proficiency, capable of slicing flesh off her victims at high speeds with precise, calculated movements.
Enhanced Durability
Hibana exhibits above-average endurance, having developed a high tolerance for pain from a young age due to the severe abuse she endured. She has shown the ability to withstand heavy blows and endure prolonged physical torment without breaking down, making her a resilient and formidable opponent in combat.
Sword-Whip Hybrid
Hibana Daida wields a uniquely designed weapon that combines elements of both a sword and a whip. This large and heavy sword is composed of multiple segmented parts connected by metal wiring, allowing it to function as both a rigid blade and a flexible whip-like weapon. During combat, she can separate the segments, extending her attack range and making her strikes more unpredictable.
The metal wiring embedded between the segments contains Worm Eater, a specialized anti-Deadman technology designed to nullify a Deadman’s Branch of Sin abilities upon contact. This makes her weapon particularly effective against Deadmen, allowing her to counter their otherwise formidable blood-based attacks.
Backpack
When confronting Rokuro and Nagi, Hibana is seen carrying an unusually long teddy bear dog backpack. This backpack not only serves as part of her childlike and eerie aesthetic but is also used to store and transport her blade, making it a practical accessory despite its unusual appearance.
