Sakura Sakurai (桜井 さくら, Sakurai Sakura, née Hanazono) is a supporting character in Maid Sama!. She is a close friend of Misaki Ayuzawa and one of the few female students at Seika High School, which was previously an all-boys institution. Over the course of the series, she develops a relationship with Kūga Sakurai, eventually marrying him and later becoming the mother of Yume Sakurai.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Sakura Sakurai is a cheerful, sociable, and caring individual who values her friendships deeply. Always supportive of those close to her, she is willing to stand by her friends whenever they need her. Despite her generally mature and friendly demeanor, she occasionally displays a childish attitude.
Sakura is well-liked among male students but frequently rejects their confessions, having turned down Masaru Gouda a hundred times. According to Shizuko Kaga, Sakura has a tendency to fall in love impulsively, often overlooking a person’s true nature. This is evident in her unwavering affection for Kūga Sakurai, the lead singer of a popular band from a neighboring high school, despite his womanizing tendencies and indifferent behavior towards her. Even when Kūga disregarded her feelings, Sakura remained tolerant and patient. However, she drew the line when he attempted to flirt with Misaki Ayuzawa, firmly telling him to stop.
Sakura also exhibits a curious and playful side, as seen when she joins Shizuko in secretly observing Takumi Usui. She maintains close friendships with both Misaki and Shizuko, forming a strong bond with them. Despite her outwardly calm and peaceful nature, Sakura is quite sensitive and emotional, often striving to appear strong even when she feels vulnerable.
Appearance
Sakura Sakurai is a petite teenage girl with medium-length, wavy dark salmon-pink hair, which she typically styles into pigtails. She has dark pink eyes, complementing her vibrant appearance. She is usually seen wearing Seika High School’s standard female uniform.
In the manga, her hair appears slightly wavier, and both her hair and eye color are depicted in a lighter shade of pink. Her delicate features and cheerful demeanor make her stand out, and she is often regarded as cute and attractive by many male students.
Background
Little is known about Sakura Sakurai’s past, except that she has an older sister with whom she shares a close bond. The two often spend time shopping together, highlighting their strong sibling relationship.
Since before the events of the series, Sakura has harbored a longstanding crush on Kūga Sakurai, the lead singer of Yumemishi, a popular band from a neighboring high school. However, her infatuation is frequently met with criticism from Shizuko Kaga, who disapproves of her feelings due to Kūga’s flirtatious and dismissive nature.
Relationships
Shizuko Kaga
Shizuko Kaga is one of Sakura’s closest friends, and they are often seen together alongside Misaki Ayuzawa. The trio frequently spends time together at school, walking through the streets, or having lunch. Both Sakura and Shizuko are members of the arranging flowers club and share the same class.
While Shizuko is generally quiet and thoughtful, she often has frustrated outbursts directed at Sakura, especially reprimanding her for falling in love too quickly with the wrong people. Despite their contrasting personalities, their friendship remains strong, with Shizuko acting as a voice of reason in Sakura’s life.
Misaki Ayuzawa
Sakura shares a strong friendship with Misaki Ayuzawa, often spending time together along with Shizuko. Unlike Shizuko, Misaki is more protective and less strict towards Sakura, often acting like a parental figure rather than a critic. She is particularly concerned about Sakura’s tendency to fall in love without considering a person’s true character and her popularity among Seika High’s male students.
During the sports festival, Sakura was chosen as the “kisser” in the Obstacle Race, where the winner would receive a kiss from her. Knowing this, Misaki competed fiercely in an attempt to prevent any of the male students from claiming the prize. However, during the race, Masaru Gouda pushed her near the school’s swimming pool, forcing Takumi Usui to intervene and take her place in the competition. Although Misaki ultimately did not win, Usui refused the prize, leaving Sakura to kiss Misaki on the cheek instead.
When Sakura, Misaki, and Shizuko visited UxMishi, the band Kūga Sakurai is part of, Sakura realized that Kūga had romantic interest in Misaki rather than her. Misaki, unsure how to handle the situation, firmly stood up to Kūga, declaring that she would not let him toy with Sakura’s feelings. Later, when Sakura was scolded by Shizuko, Misaki comforted her. Following this, Sakura resolved that the next time she falls in love, she would make sure the person genuinely cares for her, symbolized by patting her on the head, as Misaki did for her.
Kūga Sakurai
Initially, Sakura had a one-sided crush on Kūga Sakurai, the lead singer of UxMishi. Despite her admiration for him, Kūga showed little interest in her, often treating her with indifference and even flirting with Misaki despite knowing about Sakura’s feelings. However, this dynamic began to shift during the Yumesaki Festival, where Kūga was seen planning to spend time with Sakura.
In chapters 47 and 48 of the manga, Sakura invited Kūga along with Misaki and Takumi on a one-day hot spring trip to celebrate his seventeenth birthday. During the trip, Kūga’s growing feelings for Sakura became apparent, as he expressed annoyance at seeing her smiling so naturally around Misaki and Takumi. Though he initially appeared bitter, he later confessed that if it hadn’t been for Sakura, he would have “long been gone.”
As their relationship deepened, Misaki noticed Kūga and Sakura holding hands, signifying that they had grown closer. Eventually, they entered a romantic relationship, leading to their marriage. By chapter 85 of the manga, Sakura is shown pregnant with her second child, revealing that she and Kūga have started a family together.
