Takumi Usui (碓氷 拓海, Usui Takumi) is the main male protagonist of the Kaichou wa Maid-sama! manga and anime series. Renowned for his exceptional talents across various fields, he is a highly skilled and intelligent individual. Over the course of the series, he develops a romantic relationship with the female protagonist, Misaki Ayuzawa, whom he later marries, as revealed in Chapter 85 of the manga.
Background

Appearance in Anime
Takumi Usui was born on April 27 as the illegitimate child of Patricia Walker, an English-Japanese noblewoman, and her personal butler, Yū Hirose. Patricia, who was already married and had a son with her husband, fell in love with Yū. When she became pregnant with his child, she went into hiding in Japan. She later passed away during childbirth, and Yū was subsequently expelled from the Walker family, disappearing from Takumi’s life.
Following his mother’s death, Takumi was adopted by her cousin and raised in secrecy. Due to his English grandfather’s disapproval of Patricia’s actions, Takumi’s existence was largely concealed, and he had minimal contact with his older half-brother, Gerald Walker. Instead of attending a traditional school, he was homeschooled and frequently changed tutors, as they struggled to challenge his intellect. One of his tutors was the mother of Maria Miyazono. Alongside his academic pursuits, he received training in Shaolin Kung Fu, judo, and taekwondo.
Seeking more independence, Takumi chose to enroll in Seika High School, selecting it at random from a school catalog. After persuading his adoptive father and grandfather that Seika was not a prestigious institution and would not draw attention to his lineage, he was granted permission to attend. However, his family strictly forbade him from taking part-time jobs out of fear that his illegitimate status would be exposed. To accommodate his independent lifestyle, he was provided with financial support and allowed to live alone in a high-rise condominium.
Appearance
Takumi Usui is a tall young man with bright green eyes and spiky blond hair. He possesses a lean yet well-toned physique, reflecting his athleticism, and is widely regarded as the most physically capable male student at Seika High School. His popularity among both male and female students is notable, with many admiring him for his looks, charisma, and athletic prowess. This is exemplified by the large-scale contest held on Valentine’s Day, where numerous students competed for his affection. Misaki Ayuzawa has also remarked that, despite its spiky appearance, Takumi’s hair is surprisingly soft.
Considered exceptionally handsome, Takumi frequently attracts romantic attention, often leading to heartbreak among those who develop feelings for him. His usual attire consists of the Seika High School uniform, though upon transferring to Miyabigaoka High School in his third year, he began wearing the Miyabigaoka uniform, a change that shocked his peers. In terms of appearance, he more closely resembles his father but is said to have inherited his mother’s personality. Misaki has also observed that while Takumi and his half-brother, Gerald Walker, share certain similarities, they are ultimately quite different in nature.
Role in the Story
As the male protagonist of Kaichou wa Maid-sama!, Takumi Usui plays a crucial role in Misaki Ayuzawa’s life and character development. From the very beginning, he is the only one who discovers Misaki’s secret job at Maid Latte, yet instead of exposing her, he chooses to keep it hidden, teasing her while subtly watching over and protecting her. Despite being one of the most admired and sought-after boys at Seika High, Takumi’s attention remains solely on Misaki, as he observes her struggles as the school’s strict student council president. He consistently supports her in handling the challenges of leading a formerly all-boys school, stepping in whenever she is overwhelmed but never undermining her strength.
Beyond his silent support, Takumi becomes her protector, shielding her from troublemakers, aggressive rivals, and those who try to harm or undermine her. Whether it’s rescuing her from physical danger, intimidating those who threaten her, or stepping in when she is vulnerable, Takumi proves time and again that he is Misaki’s greatest ally. However, his most significant role is gradually breaking through Misaki’s stubborn resistance toward romance. Despite her initial denial of her feelings, Takumi remains patient and unwavering in his love, teasing her yet always respecting her space and choices.
Their relationship faces its biggest challenge when Takumi’s aristocratic family intervenes, disapproving of his connection to Misaki due to their social class differences. This conflict threatens to separate them, forcing Takumi to confront his past and fight for his right to be with the one he truly loves. Through his persistence and dedication, he ultimately proves that his love for Misaki is genuine and unbreakable. By the end of the series, their relationship blossoms into a deep and unwavering bond, culminating in their heartfelt marriage in the final chapter, a testament to the strength of their love and their journey together.
Relationships
Misaki Ayuzawa
Takumi Usui develops an interest in Misaki Ayuzawa early in his second year at Seika High School, after discovering her secret part-time job at Maid Latte. Initially suspicious of his intentions, Misaki believes he plans to blackmail her, but Takumi instead chooses to protect her secret. Despite Misaki dismissing his advances as teasing or harassment, Takumi remains persistent in his affection, frequently watching over her, offering advice on handling Seika’s male students, and expressing possessiveness over her.
As the series progresses, Takumi and Misaki enter a romantic relationship. However, due to his family’s influence, Takumi is forced to transfer to Miyabigaoka High School for his third year. Despite this, he continues to visit Seika High and maintains his job at Maid Latte. His love for Misaki is unwavering, and he is deeply protective of her, going as far as to shield her from harm on multiple occasions, resulting in injuries in episodes 6, 17, and 18/19.
Misaki is the only person Takumi has ever fallen in love with, and he eventually proposes to her in Chapter 81, which she accepts. Their relationship culminates in marriage in Chapter 85, with the couple tying the knot in England before embarking on their honeymoon via helicopter.
Takumi trusts Misaki more than anyone else and confides in her about his family background, a secret he keeps from others. He enjoys observing her reactions and often teases her to encourage her to express her feelings more openly. Their dynamic is referred to as a “Golden Combination” by Shouichirou Yukimura. Takumi has also mentioned that he is willing to eat anything as long as it is made by Misaki.
Hinata Shintani
Hinata Shintani is Takumi’s primary romantic rival and the only one he considers a serious threat. Their interactions are often depicted humorously, with the two being shown as growling dogs whenever they compete for Misaki’s attention. Takumi frequently displays jealousy when Misaki spends time with Hinata, sometimes pulling him away or reminding him that Misaki belongs to him.
Shouichirou Yukimura
Takumi and Shouichirou Yukimura share a rather one-sided relationship, as Takumi sees him as more of a pet than a friend, according to Misaki. One notable interaction between them occurs when Takumi kisses Yukimura, causing him great embarrassment, in an attempt to ease Misaki’s discomfort after stealing a kiss from her. Though their friendship is not particularly strong, Yukimura proves useful when Takumi investigates Soutarou Kanou’s true motives.
Li Yi Hua
Li Yi Hua is the daughter of a wealthy Hong Kong millionaire, introduced in Chapter 68 alongside her fiancé, Arashiyama Tenryuu. Although not close to Takumi, she and other individuals, including Tomikouji, Umekouji Tomu, and Kaon Umekouji, are encouraged to befriend him. During a visit to Seika High, Li Yi Hua and her companions take a photo with Takumi to document their association.
Gerald Walker
Gerald Walker is Takumi’s older English half-brother and plays a significant role in the Walker family’s attempts to control Takumi’s life. The two bear a strong resemblance, with Gerald having straight dark blue hair and light blue eyes. Unlike Takumi, Gerald is fully accepted by the Walker family and supports their plan to transfer Takumi to Miyabigaoka High School to bring him under their influence.
The brothers have a strained relationship, largely due to Gerald’s interference in Takumi’s life and his attempts to separate him from Misaki. Gerald speaks fluent Japanese but primarily communicates with Takumi in English. He disapproves of Takumi’s relationship with Misaki and appears to hold resentment toward him, possibly due to Takumi’s status as an illegitimate child.
