Yukio Kondō (近藤 幸男, Kondō Yukio), is a minor character in Handa-kun and one of Sei Handa’s classmates. Unlike many of the students who misunderstand or idolize Handa, Kondō is one of the few individuals who actually sees Handa for who he really is a socially awkward and anxious teenager who does not realize his own popularity.
Kondō’s role in the series is primarily as a bystander, observing the chaotic misunderstandings that surround Handa and occasionally providing a more grounded perspective on the absurd situations unfolding at school.
Background

Appearance in anime
Yukio Kondō is a relatively ordinary student at Handa’s school, and unlike many of his peers, he does not belong to any major faction that worships Handa. While most of the students either see Handa as an untouchable genius or an intimidating figure, Kondō is one of the few people who recognizes that Handa is simply a socially awkward and misunderstood individual.
Despite this, Kondō often gets caught up in the bizarre social hierarchy surrounding Handa, witnessing the exaggerated admiration and rivalry that the rest of the school imposes upon him. While he does not always actively interfere, he often provides an internal commentary on the ridiculous events taking place, making him a somewhat rational observer in a school full of over-the-top reactions.
Appearance
Kondō has a plain and unassuming appearance, reflecting his role as a relatively normal student in contrast to the more eccentric characters around him. He wears the standard school uniform and has short, neatly-kept hair, reinforcing his everyman persona.
Personality
Kondō is level-headed, observant, and rational, often noticing the absurdity of the situations involving Handa when no one else does. While most students either idolize, fear, or envy Handa, Kondō simply sees him as a normal (if socially awkward) person who is oblivious to how others perceive him.
He is one of the few people who does not blindly follow the school’s obsession with Handa, making him a much-needed voice of reason in the story. However, despite his awareness of the misunderstandings, he rarely steps in to correct them, either because he finds it amusing or because he knows it is futile to do so.
Role in the Story
-
An Unbiased Observer
Unlike most of the exaggerated personalities in Handa’s school, Kondō is one of the few characters who remains neutral, neither idolizing Handa nor antagonizing him. He often observes the absurd misunderstandings surrounding Handa and internally comments on them, offering a perspective that the audience can relate to. -
Occasionally Trying to Clarify Misunderstandings
While Kondō typically remains an observer, there are rare moments where he attempts to clear up the confusion about Handa’s personality. However, his efforts are usually ignored or overshadowed by the school’s overwhelming delusions, leaving him frustrated but ultimately resigned to the chaos. -
A Foil to the Other Students
Kondō’s calm and rational demeanor contrasts with the obsessive behavior of Handa’s followers, making him one of the few normal characters in an otherwise exaggerated setting. His lack of blind admiration makes him a rare figure in the series who actually understands Handa, even if he doesn’t always intervene.
Relationships
Sei Handa
While not particularly close to Handa, Kondō is one of the few classmates who recognizes Handa’s true nature. He sees through the misunderstandings surrounding him, but at the same time, he does not go out of his way to correct them, knowing that Handa’s obliviousness and the school’s obsession make it a losing battle.
Other Classmates
Kondō is often seen reacting to the antics of Handa’s self-proclaimed followers, whether it be the Handa Force, rival groups, or admirers. He finds their behavior ridiculous but is often dragged into their delusions against his will.
