Toshizou Hijikata

Toshizō Hijikata (土方 歳三, Hijikata Toshizō), is one of the central antagonists in Golden Kamuy and later an anti-heroic supporting character. A legendary historical figure, he was the vice-commander of the Shinsengumi, a famous samurai police force during the late Edo period. Thought to have died decades ago, Hijikata was actually held in secret as a political prisoner before escaping from Abashiri Prison alongside the other tattooed convicts.

Initially, he serves as one of the major threats, standing in direct opposition to Sugimoto Saichi and Tokushirō Tsurumi. However, as the story progresses, he becomes a more complex and morally ambiguous character, sometimes aligning with the protagonists when their goals coincide. As the leader of a faction of escaped convicts, he seeks the hidden Ainu gold to fund his vision of a new samurai-led government, aiming to restore Japan’s old ways before the Meiji era fully takes over.

After spending years as a political prisoner, Hijikata eventually escaped from Abashiri Prison, forming his own faction from the tattooed convicts. Unlike many of the other gold seekers, who chase power or wealth, Hijikata’s goal is ideological he wishes to rebuild Japan in the image of the old samurai rule, resisting the full westernization brought by the Meiji government.
