Aren Kuboyasu (窪谷須 亜蓮, Kuboyasu Aren), is one of the main characters in Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.). He is a former delinquent who, upon transferring to PK Academy, tries to live a peaceful and normal high school life. However, his short temper and violent tendencies often surface, making it difficult for him to fully abandon his past ways.
Although Aren genuinely wants to reform, he struggles with self-control, as he easily loses his temper when provoked. While he generally tries to avoid fights, he remains one of the physically strongest students in school. He is also one of the few people Kusuo actually acknowledges as competent, though he finds Aren’s anger issues exhausting. Aren was played by Kento Kaku in the Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan live-action movie.
Background

Appearance in anime
Before transferring to PK Academy, Aren was a well-known delinquent, feared for his strength and aggressive nature. He spent years getting into fights, becoming one of the most feared students in his previous school. However, after transferring, he decided to turn over a new leaf, promising himself that he would abandon violence and live a peaceful high school life.
Despite his best efforts, Aren struggles to fully suppress his delinquent instincts. When he gets provoked, insulted, or annoyed, he quickly reverts to his old ways, often threatening people with brutal beatdowns before catching himself. His explosive temper creates many comedic situations, as his classmates are both amused and terrified of his sudden outbursts.
Only a few people know about his delinquent past, including Kusuo Saiki, Shun Kaidou, Mikoto Aiura, and Touma Akechi. The rest of the students see him as just another classmate, though some occasionally notice his suspiciously violent tendencies.
Appearance
Aren has spiky purple hair with a prominent ahoge (cowlick strand) sticking up at the front, which symbolizes his uncontrollable nature. He has sharp, intense eyes that give him a naturally intimidating presence, even when he is trying to act calm. His lean yet muscular build reflects his strength and past as a fighter.
He wears the standard PK Academy uniform, consisting of a green jacket with black trim, matching pants, and a white undershirt. However, when he loses his temper or gets into a fight, his expression hardens into a fierce glare, making him look like the delinquent he used to be.
Personality
Aren is a reformed delinquent who struggles to control his violent tendencies. While he genuinely wants to live a normal and peaceful life, his explosive temper and short patience often get the better of him. He tries to act friendly and composed, but the moment someone annoys or provokes him, he instantly shifts into his old, aggressive self, threatening to beat people into submission before stopping himself.
Despite his violent impulses, Aren is not a bad person he has a strong sense of justice and often protects his friends when necessary. He is also loyal and dependable, always looking out for those he cares about. While he struggles to fully suppress his old habits, he genuinely tries his best to be a better person.
Unlike many of his classmates, Aren is one of the more rational and perceptive students, quickly catching on to suspicious behavior. He is one of the few people Kusuo respects, as Aren is actually intelligent and competent, unlike many of their classmates.
Role in the Story
-
The Struggle to Be “Normal”
Aren’s main goal is to live an ordinary life without resorting to violence. However, due to his short temper and natural fighting instincts, he constantly struggles to suppress his delinquent nature. His attempts at acting normal often result in hilarious failures, as he snaps at minor provocations and threatens people without realizing it. -
Strongest Fighter in School
Though he wants to avoid fights, Aren remains one of the strongest characters in PK Academy. Even when he holds back, he is more than capable of taking down bullies and troublemakers with ease. His fighting ability makes him one of the few people Kusuo sees as a useful ally in case of emergencies. -
Unintentionally Scaring His Friends
Despite his genuine efforts to fit in, Aren occasionally terrifies his classmates, especially Shun Kaidou, who idolizes him but is also scared of him. Even though Aren tries to be friendly, his natural aggression and intimidating aura make him accidentally frightening to those around him.
Relationships
Kusuo Saiki
Kusuo is one of the few people who knows about Aren’s delinquent past. While Kusuo finds Aren’s anger issues exhausting, he acknowledges his intelligence and fighting ability, making him one of the few classmates he respects. Aren, in turn, trusts Kusuo, seeing him as one of the few people who understands him.
Shun Kaidou
Shun idolizes Aren, believing that he is a warrior with hidden strength. However, Shun is also terrified of him, as Aren’s violent outbursts make him nervous. Aren, for his part, finds Shun ridiculous but amusing, occasionally humoring his “Dark Reunion” delusions.
Riki Nendou
Nendou is one of the few people who is completely unfazed by Aren’s intimidating aura. While Aren initially finds Nendou annoying, he gradually becomes accustomed to his presence. Nendou’s cluelessness and unwavering confidence make him one of the only people Aren doesn’t bother threatening, as Nendou simply doesn’t react to it.
Mikoto Aiura
Mikoto, being a fortune teller, immediately recognizes Aren’s past as a delinquent. However, she doesn’t judge him for it, instead finding his struggle to act normal entertaining. Aren, in turn, is one of the few people who takes Mikoto’s predictions seriously, though he tries to avoid getting involved in her antics.
Touma Akechi
Touma, having an excellent memory, remembers Aren’s past as a feared delinquent, despite Aren trying to keep it a secret. This makes Aren extremely irritated, as Touma constantly brings up his past in casual conversation, causing Aren to lose his temper regularly.
