Jail Murdoch (ジェイル=マードック, Jeiru Mādokku) is the deuteragonist of Plunderer. He serves as a Lieutenant in the Althea Royal Guard and holds the position of squad leader, demonstrating exceptional combat skills and leadership abilities. In addition to his role within the Royal Guard, Jail is also the commander of a special troop in Gefängnis, where he upholds strict discipline and order. Known for his unwavering sense of justice, he is highly dedicated to his duty and often clashes with those who act against his moral code.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Jail Murdoch is a highly detail-oriented individual, making him an exceptionally skilled soldier and capable combatant. His defining trait is his unshakable conviction, which serves as the driving force behind his character development. Guided by a strong sense of justice, he makes decisions based on his deeply ingrained moral principles, often standing firm in the face of adversity.
At first glance, Jail appears to be asexual and strictly career-oriented, showing little to no romantic or physical interest in others. This is evident in situations where he is unfazed by nudity, such as when he casually advises a group of naked women to “lose weight” rather than reacting with embarrassment or attraction. However, during the time-travel plot, his demeanor undergoes a noticeable shift, particularly in his reactions toward a specific character, hinting at a deeper emotional development.

Appearance
Jail Murdoch has short, icy blue hair with a distinct long streak of black, which matches the color of his iron-based abilities. His sharp blue eyes further complement his cool-toned appearance. He is most commonly seen wearing his military uniform, which reflects his disciplined and authoritative nature. In addition to his uniform, he always wears a pair of white gloves and his signature glasses, further emphasizing his composed and meticulous attitude.
Abilities and Power
Jail Murdoch possesses an extraordinary count that reflects his piercing conviction, with his initial recorded count being 900. However, his true count is significantly higher, originally 12,500, later decreasing to 12,496 due to the events of the series. To avoid promotion to a higher rank, he deliberately conceals his true count, allowing him to remain active in field missions rather than being restricted to administrative duties. His strength is further demonstrated when he activates his second glove, temporarily raising his count to 45,000, showcasing the immense force of his conviction. However, after losing to Alexandrov in a “Startheft Bout,” his count is drastically reduced to 1. Later, when Alexandrov entrusts his Ballot to Jail, his count skyrockets to an astonishing 325,000, solidifying him as one of the most powerful individuals in Plunderer.
Jail’s signature ability is iron manipulation, allowing him to create and control iron structures at will. He can mold iron into various tools, weapons, and semi-living constructs, with some of his most notable creations being iron pillars, kunai knives, gauntlets, and the formidable Iron Devil. His ability extends to Iron Projection, where he can launch metal projectiles in various shapes as powerful offensive attacks. Jail’s abilities are closely tied to his unyielding conviction, which enhances his physical and magical capabilities. His Conviction Empowerment allows him to grow stronger based on the intensity of his beliefs, making him incredibly resilient in combat. Additionally, he possesses Lie Detection, which enables him to detect falsehoods from those with less conviction than himself, as seen when he uncovers Nana’s lie about Licht’s whereabouts and Erin’s revelation of Gespenst’s betrayal. Over time, Jail also demonstrates Deflection, an ability that allows him to survive normally fatal wounds through sheer willpower and conviction alone. Eventually, he gains the power to deflect bullets fired by individuals with weaker resolve than his own.
Beyond his mental fortitude, Jail exhibits superhuman speed, moving at a pace comparable to Licht in his 5,700-count form. His capabilities further evolve after inheriting Alexandrov’s Ballot, granting him new abilities. During his fight against Robert, he demonstrates the power of Blast (爆撃, Bakugeki, Yen Press: Bombardment), an ability derived from Alexandrov that significantly amplifies his attacks. He also acquires Pyrokinesis, allowing him to control and manipulate fire. This extends to Explosive Fire Manipulation, where he can cause anything his flames touch to become a ticking time bomb. Furthermore, he can unleash Fire Blasts, channeling fire into a concentrated attack that can engulf specific target areas in flames.
Through a combination of iron manipulation, conviction-based powers, and acquired fire abilities, Jail Murdoch proves himself to be one of the most formidable fighters in Plunderer. His evolution throughout the series, driven by his unyielding will, allows him to continuously push his limits and adapt to even the most challenging battles.

Nana Bassler
Jail has great respect for Nana, recognizing her wisdom and seeking her advice on matters of history and morality.
Lynn May
A junior officer who greatly admires him, and eventually develops romantic feelings for him, though Jail is often oblivious to her affections.
Althea Royal Guard & Government Officials

Legacy
Jail Murdoch’s evolution from a rigid military officer to a revolutionary leader is one of Plunderer’s most compelling character arcs. His dedication to true justice, unwavering sense of honor, and immense combat abilities make him one of the most respected and well-developed characters in the series. Whether as Licht’s rival, Hina’s protector, or Althea’s greatest rebel, Jail’s impact on the story and its themes of morality, power, and justice is undeniable.
