Lavi

Lavi (ラビ , Rabi), is a main character in D.Gray-man and an Exorcist affiliated with the European Branch of the Black Order. However, his allegiance to the Order is secondary, as he is the chosen successor of the Bookman Clan, whose mission is to record world history as it unfolds. He operates under the alias Lavi, which is his 49th identity, with his previous alias being Deak (ディック, Dīku). Despite his duties as a Bookman apprentice, Lavi fights alongside his fellow Exorcists as part of General Marian Cross’ unit.

Lavi is one of the most cheerful and outgoing members of the Black Order, providing comic relief with his carefree personality, playful nature, and teasing demeanor. However, beneath his jovial attitude, he struggles with the conflict between his role as a neutral observer and his growing emotional attachment to his comrades.

Background

Appearance in anime

Lavi was raised within the Bookman Clan, a secretive group that remains neutral in all conflicts, including the war between the Exorcists and the Millennium Earl. As the next Bookman, he was trained from a young age to observe and record history without emotional involvement, suppressing personal attachments to those around him.

Under the guidance of his mentor, Bookman, Lavi adopted numerous aliases over the years, with “Lavi” being his 49th persona. Each identity allowed him to infiltrate different organizations and record key historical events. However, when he and Bookman joined the Black Order, Lavi’s perspective began to shift. Unlike previous assignments, where he remained emotionally detached, Lavi found himself growing close to his fellow Exorcists, particularly Allen Walker, Yu Kanda, and Lenalee Lee.

This emotional conflict challenges the principles of the Bookman Clan, as Lavi begins to question whether it is truly possible to remain an impartial observer in the face of war, suffering, and friendship.

Appearance

Lavi is a young man with spiky, bright red hair and emerald green eyes. His most distinguishing feature is his black eyepatch, which covers his right eye. The eyepatch is a mystery, as Lavi refuses to explain its origin, though it is implied to be related to his past.

He typically wears the Black Order’s standard Exorcist uniform, but his personalized look includes a green bandana, a black headband, and black fingerless gloves. His uniform consists of a black coat with silver accents, though he often leaves it open, giving him a more relaxed and casual appearance compared to his fellow Exorcists.

Despite his laid-back and mischievous demeanor, Lavi is physically strong and agile, often displaying remarkable reflexes and endurance in battle. His expressive face and playful smirks contribute to his charismatic personality.

Personality

Lavi is best known for his easygoing, fun-loving, and teasing personality. He frequently jokes around, flirts, and makes sarcastic remarks, often lightening the mood even in dire situations. He has a keen sense of humor and enjoys teasing his friends, particularly Kanda and Allen, much to their annoyance.

Despite his cheerful demeanor, Lavi is also intelligent, observant, and highly analytical, a skill honed from his Bookman training. He is quick-witted and resourceful, able to assess situations rapidly and devise strategic responses in battle. However, his conflicted emotions regarding his role as a Bookman often lead to moments of deep introspection and doubt.

Although Bookmen are supposed to remain detached, Lavi cares deeply for his friends and struggles with the possibility of leaving them behind once his mission at the Black Order is complete. He fears losing himself in emotional bonds, knowing that attachment contradicts the Bookman way of life.

Role in the Story

  • Joining the Black Order
Lavi and Bookman join the European Branch of the Black Order, posing as Exorcists in order to record the ongoing war against the Noah Clan and the Millennium Earl. Despite their true intentions, Lavi quickly befriends Allen Walker, Yu Kanda, and Lenalee Lee, forming strong bonds with his fellow Exorcists.

  • The Ark and His Inner Conflict
During the Noah’s Ark Arc, Lavi’s loyalty is put to the test when Road Kamelot manipulates his mind, forcing him to confront his true identity as a Bookman. Under psychological torture, Lavi experiences visions of himself erasing his friends from history, emphasizing his inner conflict between duty and personal attachment. This arc is pivotal for Lavi’s character development, as he begins to question whether he can truly remain neutral in the Exorcist-Noah war.

  • The Battle Against the Noah Clan
Lavi plays a crucial role in multiple battles against the Noah Clan, showcasing his versatility and combat prowess. However, as the war escalates, Bookman reminds Lavi that their mission is to observe and record, not to fight for one side. This forces Lavi to grapple with the possibility of abandoning his comrades in favor of the Bookman way.

Relationships

Allen Walker (Rival and Ally)
Lavi and Allen share a brotherly bond, often joking and teasing each other. Despite their lighthearted interactions, Lavi deeply respects Allen and acknowledges his strength and determination. However, as Allen is suspected of being part Noah, Lavi faces the moral dilemma of choosing between helping his friend or remaining neutral as a Bookman.

Yu Kanda (Rival and Friend)
Lavi and Kanda have a comedic yet complex relationship. Lavi enjoys annoying Kanda by calling him nicknames like “Yuu”, which often results in violent outbursts from Kanda. Despite their constant bickering, Lavi deeply respects Kanda’s combat skills and loyalty.

Lavi and Lenalee share a close and caring friendship. He is often protective of her, though he also teases her like a big brother. Lenalee is one of the few people who understands Lavi’s internal conflict, offering him comfort and support during difficult times.

Bookman (Mentor and Father Figure)
Bookman raised Lavi and trained him to be his successor, instilling the belief that Bookmen must remain neutral and detached. However, as Lavi becomes more attached to the Black Order, Bookman reprimands him, warning him of the dangers of personal involvement. Their relationship is tense, as Lavi struggles between honoring his mentor’s teachings and following his own path.
