Mikazuki Augus (三日月・オーガス, Mikadzuki Ōgasu), commonly called Mika, is the main protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. He is a skilled yet brutal mobile suit pilot and a core member of Tekkadan, a mercenary group composed of child soldiers. Mikazuki serves as the primary pilot of the Gundam Barbatos, later evolving into Gundam Barbatos Lupus and Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex. Throughout the series, he is known for his unwavering loyalty to Orga Itsuka and his ruthless combat skills, earning him the title “The Devil of Tekkadan” (Tekkadan no Akuma).
Background

Appearance in anime
Mikazuki was born into a world of conflict and oppression, where he was forced to fight for survival from a young age. He was one of the many child soldiers raised under the Third Army Division of Chryse Guard Security (CGS), which was later reformed into Tekkadan under the leadership of his best friend, Orga Itsuka.
Due to his upbringing, Mika is highly accustomed to battle, showing little hesitation in taking lives to protect his comrades. Unlike most pilots, he heavily relies on Alaya-Vijnana, a special interface system that allows for an enhanced connection with mobile suits. However, excessive use of the system results in severe physical consequences, gradually paralyzing parts of his body throughout the series.
Despite his detached and quiet nature, Mika deeply values the bonds he has with his friends, particularly Orga, Kudelia Aina Bernstein, and Atra Mixta, who represent different aspects of his humanity.
Appearance
Mikazuki has a slim but athletic build, with messy black hair, thick eyebrows, and sharp, piercing blue eyes. He wears a worn-out green jacket over a white tank top, along with brown cargo pants and boots standard attire for Tekkadan members.
As the series progresses, Mika’s body begins to show signs of damage from excessive Alaya-Vijnana usage. By the second season, he loses function in his right arm and later his right eye, though he continues piloting Gundam Barbatos despite his injuries. By the climax, he is nearly paralyzed from the waist down, forcing him to rely entirely on his mobile suit in battle.
Personality
Mikazuki is often described as stoic, ruthless, and fiercely loyal. He speaks in a calm, monotone manner and rarely displays strong emotions unless provoked. Unlike other Gundam protagonists, Mika has no grand ambitions his sole motivation is to follow Orga Itsuka, whom he views as a leader and older brother figure.
His detachment from morality makes him one of the most dangerous pilots in the series. He kills without hesitation, treating battle as an everyday routine rather than a traumatic experience. While his actions may seem cold-blooded, Mika does not enjoy killing he simply sees it as a necessary part of survival.
Despite his hardened nature, he has a gentle and caring side, particularly toward Atra Mixta and Kudelia Aina Bernstein. He also enjoys farming and dreams of one day running an orchard, symbolizing his hidden desire for a peaceful life.
Role in the Story

Joining Tekkadan and Piloting Barbatos
Mikazuki is introduced as a soldier under CGS’ Third Army Division, where he and other child soldiers are treated as expendable. When Orga Itsuka leads a coup to overthrow their abusive superiors, Mika stands by his side, helping establish Tekkadan. He quickly proves himself as their deadliest weapon, piloting the Gundam Barbatos to destroy enemy forces with brutal efficiency. -
Rising Through Battles and Consequences
As Tekkadan gains notoriety, Mika continues to participate in deadly battles, gradually suffering from nerve damage due to repeated use of the Alaya-Vijnana system. Despite losing function in his right arm and eye, he refuses to stop fighting, trusting Orga’s vision of a brighter future. -
McGillis Fareed Incident and Final Stand
In the final arc, Tekkadan finds itself trapped in a war orchestrated by McGillis Fareed against Gjallarhorn. Mika pilots Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex in a desperate battle to protect his comrades, but the overwhelming enemy forces slowly wear him down. During Tekkadan’s last stand, Mika fights to the death, single-handedly taking down numerous Gjallarhorn forces before finally succumbing to his injuries. Even in his final moments, he remains loyal to Orga, refusing to abandon their dream. His last words reflect his unwavering devotion: “Orga… did I do a good job?”
Relationships
Orga Itsuka
Mika’s closest and most important relationship is with Orga Itsuka, the leader of Tekkadan. He follows Orga without question, believing in his decisions completely. Their bond is one of absolute trust, with Orga acting as Mika’s guide and Mika serving as Orga’s strongest weapon.
Kudelia Aina Bernstein
Kudelia is one of the few people Mika shows genuine kindness toward. Initially, he sees her as a client, but as the series progresses, he grows to respect her ideals. Though their relationship remains platonic, Kudelia often worries about Mika’s well-being and views him as a tragic figure.
Atra Mixta
Atra is one of Mika’s closest friends and the person who provides him with a sense of normalcy. She is deeply in love with him, and though Mika is somewhat oblivious to romance, he cares for her greatly. After his death, it is revealed that Atra was pregnant with his child, securing his legacy.
McGillis Fareed
McGillis sees Mika as a symbol of true strength, admiring his natural combat prowess. However, Mika views McGillis with indifference, only acknowledging him as an ally when necessary. Their differing ideologies Mika’s loyalty vs. McGillis’ ambition—contrast their approaches to power.
