Despite her seemingly flawless execution of military leadership, Tanya struggles with the differences between her past life’s corporate environment and her current military career. She often assumes that others share her logical mindset, leading her to miscalculate their actions. For instance, she mistakenly believes that soldiers, like corporate employees, would avoid volunteering for dangerous assignments when, in reality, patriotic or ambitious individuals willingly seek such positions. These misjudgments frequently derail her plans, though she stubbornly refuses to acknowledge that her methods may be flawed.

Differences in the Anime Adaptation
While the anime adaptation closely follows the source material, it places greater emphasis on Tanya’s brutality and cruelty. Certain scenes portray her as more overtly ruthless than in the light novel or manga.

For example, in the first episode, she deliberately orchestrates the deaths of two insubordinate soldiers, whereas in the original novel, she simply reassigns them to prevent discord. Additionally, her relationship with Viktoriya “Visha” Ivanovna Serebryakov is portrayed as more distant rather than appreciating Visha’s support during the formation of the 203rd Air Mage Battalion, she expresses a preference for leaving her behind at the Rhine front. These subtle alterations contribute to a more antagonistic and intimidating portrayal of Tanya in the anime.

In the anime adaptation, the salaryman’s face is largely obscured in most scenes, with his full appearance only revealed in an official artbook. He is depicted with dark hair parted in the middle, and in one close-up, his eyes are shown to be dark with a slight green tint. He is dressed in a white shirt, grey suit, and necktie.

Designed by Yuuji Hosogoshi, Tanya’s anime appearance closely follows the light novel’s description but with some notable differences. Her blonde hair is messier, with strands sticking out more prominently. In 2013, Tanya von Degurechaff was originally a Japanese salaryman working in the Human Resources Department of a major corporation. His primary duty involved terminating employees, a task he executed with strict efficiency and a lack of empathy. One day, after dismissing a subordinate for incompetence, he was confronted and pushed onto the train tracks by the enraged former employee, leading to his untimely death.

In the moments before his demise, the salaryman had his first encounter with Being X, a self-proclaimed deity. During their conversation, he openly expressed atheistic beliefs, dismissing metaphysical entities like God and the Devil. He criticized Being X’s management of humanity, arguing that faith had eroded due to divine neglect. Amused yet angered by the man’s defiance, Being X decided to test his faith by reincarnating him in a war-torn world as Tanya Degurechaff, a blonde-haired, blue-eyed infant girl.

Reborn in the year 1914 in an alternate reality resembling Interwar Europe, Tanya was placed in an orphanage within the Empire, a powerful militaristic nation. For years, she lived under the church’s care until a group of specialists conducted magical aptitude tests on the children. Displaying remarkable potential, Tanya was identified as a prime candidate for conscription into the Imperial Armed Forces.

Recognizing the inevitability of military service, she voluntarily enlisted in the Empire’s military academy to secure better treatment and career opportunities. With a strategic life plan in mind, she aimed for a rear-line position in an elite administrative division to avoid frontline combat. However, her exceptional combat skills and intelligence soon placed her on an entirely different trajectory.

At just nine years old, Tanya successfully graduated from the Military Training Camp, earning a promotion to Warrant Officer. She was assigned command of an artillery firing squad and deployed for her first combat mission on the frontlines.

Her initial task was to provide reconnaissance for ground forces, but her unit was soon ambushed by enemy troops. When Tanya requested permission to retreat, her request was denied, and she was instead ordered to hold the line until reinforcements arrived estimated to take ten minutes. With no other choice, Tanya engaged the enemy head-on, managing to eliminate three soldiers and severely wound two others (one confirmed kill and two injured in the light novel).

During the battle, Tanya deliberately inflicted an injury upon herself, reasoning that an injured soldier would be medically discharged and receive military care. However, instead of securing her escape from the battlefield, her outstanding performance in combat only solidified her reputation as a formidable soldier.

Tanya was later selected to participate in the experimental trials of the Elenium Type 95 Operation Orb, a cutting-edge yet unstable magical device developed by Dr. Schugel. On her first test flight, the orb malfunctioned and exploded at 6,000 feet above sea level, causing her minor injuries.

The deity declared that the only way to safely use the orb was to pray for divine assistance.

Reluctantly, Tanya recited a prayer, which immediately stabilized the orb and allowed her to wield it with unparalleled efficiency. Though this newfound ability granted her a significant combat advantage, she perceived the orb as a cursed weapon, as it forced her into a devout soldier’s role, strengthening the very faith she sought to reject.

However, the use of divine magic comes at a cost. Tanya experiences severe psychological strain, often suffering from memory loss and mental instability following its activation. To mitigate permanent corruption, she wears a rosary, which acts as a safeguard against the lingering effects of Being X’s influence.
