Paul Greyrat

Paul Greyrat (パウロ・グレイラット, Pauro Gureiratto), born Paul Notos Greyrat (パウロ・ノトス・グレイラット, Pauro Notosu Gureiratto), is the father of Rudeus Greyrat, Norn Greyrat, and Aisha Greyrat. A highly talented swordsman, Paul achieved Advanced Rank in all three sword styles—Sword God, Water God, and North God—at a young age. Despite his skill, he was notorious for his lustful nature, often attracting and engaging in relationships with many women. However, he eventually settled down and married Zenith Latreia.

Following the Teleport Incident, Paul’s inability to locate his missing family led him into severe depression. Overcome with grief and guilt, he turned to alcohol as a means of coping with his failures until his eventual reunion with Rudeus.

Appearance in Anime

Paul Greyrat, originally named Paul Notos Greyrat, was born into a high-ranking noble family in the Asura Kingdom. However, due to a heated conflict with his father, Amarant Greyrat, Paul decided to abandon his noble status, leave his home, and discard the Notos name in pursuit of a more independent life as an adventurer.

During his travels, he founded the Fangs of the Black Wolf, a renowned adventurer party consisting of six members, including himself. Over time, Paul developed a romantic relationship with one of his teammates, Zenith Latreia, and eventually married her. The couple later settled in Buena Village, where Zenith gave birth to their first child, Rudeus Greyrat.

Appearance

Paul Greyrat is a tall, muscular, and handsome man with sandy light-brown hair. His hairstyle consists of short strands framing his face, while the rest is gathered into a long ponytail that rests above his shoulder. He has striking green eyes and a distinctive mole near his left eye.

Personality

Paul Greyrat is a confident, bold, and playful man. Despite being born into Asuran nobility, those who know him often describe him as rude and rough-mannered, speaking in a way that resembles a thug rather than a noble. This frequently surprises people who meet Rudeus Greyrat, as they find it hard to believe that Paul is his father. However, despite his coarse demeanor, Paul is deeply caring toward his loved ones and will go to great lengths to protect them.

Paul is also notorious for his lustful nature, a common trait among the Notos family, and has a particular attraction to women with large breasts. He has a long history of womanizing, frequently engaging in relationships especially with his female comrades before Zenith finally tied him down. As Rudeus himself reflects during his time in the Demon Continent, while Paul wasn’t a bad father, he wasn’t exactly a good person either at least in terms of fidelity.

One of Paul’s biggest flaws is his tendency to jump to conclusions without fully listening to others, which has led to conflicts and misunderstandings with various characters throughout the story.

Powers and Abilities

Paul Greyrat possesses exceptional physical prowess, having been trained from a young age in swordsmanship. His abilities allow him to fulfill the role of a Tank or Subtank, depending on the battle’s requirements. Paul is skilled enough to go head-to-head with a Manatite Hydra, evading all of its attacks while quickly repositioning himself to counter-strike without exhaustion.

Paul’s fighting style is a balanced fusion of the three major sword styles:

  • North God Style – Used to close the distance with his opponent.
  • Sword God Style – Employed for quick and decisive strikes.
  • Water God Style – Utilized for defense and counterattacks.
  • This hybrid approach makes his combat method ideal for a swordsman, allowing him to adapt to different opponents and situations effectively.

Paul primarily wields a double-edged sword with a triangular-shaped crossguard featuring two triangle holes. He is always seen carrying his sword, even while sleeping a habit he formed during his time as an adventurer. Rudeus refers to this weapon as “Paul’s Beloved Sword.” Despite retiring from adventuring after settling in Buena Village, Paul still keeps his Adventurer Card tucked away in his sword’s sheath, along with some Asura Gold Coins for emergencies.

In addition to his primary sword, Paul also wields a double-edged short sword with a curved black blade featuring three holes, the middle hole being larger than the others. The sword has a circular crossguard with a bow-shaped knuckle guard, wrapping around the wielder’s hand, and a silver pommel. Paul dual-wields this short sword in his offhand.

This short sword, which Paul purchased in Rapan, possesses a rare ability known as “Armor Break.” This ability enhances the weapon’s sharpness against harder armor, allowing it to cut through even the toughest defenses effortlessly. The merchant who sold it was unaware of its potential, dismissing it as a dull knife incapable of cutting dried meat and practically selling it for a few copper coins.

The Armor Break ability is also referenced in “The Legend of Perugius,” a book found in Buena Village, where a legendary warrior wields a similar weapon. Due to this ability, Paul can effortlessly kill armored warriors with a clean strike, even when using his offhand.

    Legacy

Paul Greyrat’s journey in Mushoku Tensei represents growth, redemption, and the complexities of fatherhood. From a reckless noble runaway to a devoted father and self-sacrificing warrior, his character arc is one of maturity and responsibility. His final act of heroism leaves an enduring impact on Rudeus, shaping his path and understanding of what it truly means to be a father and protector.
