Tohru’s Full Character Design from the Anime.

In her human form, Tohru is an attractive young woman with long blonde hair that fades to fiery orange at the tips, and red-orange eyes with dilated pupils. She has a curvaceous figure, often claiming to have a D-cup size (from a dragon’s perspective). Her maid outfit is a magical transformation, created from her dragon scales. She first adopts the uniform after visiting Kobayashi’s apartment, inspired by a maid cosplay café (Maid Café Cozy).

While at Kobayashi’s apartment, Tohru comfortably lets her tail and occasionally her wings remain visible. When outside, she hides both her tail and wings but retains her horns, which are often attributed to cosplay by onlookers. She also has a long, serpentine tongue, though she rarely shows it.

Personality

Tohru, originally a Chaos Dragon, was raised to despise humans and to embody a fierce, destructive force of evil. However, her perspective radically shifts after meeting Kobayashi. Now, Tohru is cheerful, kind, and friendly toward every human she encounters—except those who, real or perceived, pose a threat to her beloved Kobayashi. She is easily influenced by modern media, particularly television and the internet, which often leads her to quirky behaviors. Tohru also shares a competitive, fiery dynamic with her rival, Elma.

As Kobayashi’s maid, Tohru takes her duties seriously and cares deeply for the household. She tends to every aspect of daily life, though her enthusiasm sometimes leads to amusing or troublesome situations, such as when she tries to feed her tail to Kobayashi or becomes overly interested in Kobayashi’s dirty laundry. Despite the chaos, Kobayashi appreciates her efforts and helps Tohru navigate human culture and modern life. Tohru is fiercely protective of Kanna, serving as both a maternal figure and big sister to the young dragon.

Having been accepted by Kobayashi—even in her dragon form—Tohru quickly develops a deep, unwavering love for her. Though Kobayashi’s stoic nature and often indifferent responses to her advances don’t deter Tohru, she continually expresses her love in a variety of ways. This includes playful tricks, like creating a love potion-laced chocolate heart or finding increasingly creative ways to make Kobayashi eat her tail.

At her core, Tohru is warm, loving, and responsible. Despite retaining her dragon strength and abilities, she is content with her life on Earth. Her love for Kobayashi is so profound that she prefers to stay in the human world, even knowing she may eventually outlive her beloved.

Background

https://everipedia.io/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/shibuya.jpg

Little Tohru in her Dragon Form.

Centuries ago, Tohru was raised in a world where dragons were taught to believe that humans were inferior, evil, and foolish beings. This belief was instilled in her from a young age, leading to her initial disdain for humanity and aligning her with the Chaos Faction. Throughout her life, she fought fiercely against humans, seeing them as little more than obstacles. However, everything changed during a decisive battle where Tohru was gravely injured by a god leading a human army. This defeat left her in a near-death state, forcing her to retreat to the modern world in search of refuge and healing.

It is in this new world that she crosses paths with Kobayashi, a human who, despite being intoxicated, rescues her from certain death. Tohru, stunned by Kobayashi’s unexpected kindness, finds herself deeply moved by the human’s selflessness. On that very day, a profound bond forms between them. Tohru falls head over heels in love with Kobayashi, captivated not only by her compassion but also by her unique and unassuming character. Overwhelmed by gratitude and affection, Tohru accepts Kobayashi’s offer to live with her as her maid, marking the beginning of their close and enduring relationship. This shift in her worldview—from viewing humans as inferior to seeing them as deserving of love and respect—sets Tohru on a new path, one filled with warmth, loyalty, and an unwavering devotion to Kobayashi.

Abilities

Tohru Unleashing Her Fire Breath.

Tohru is widely regarded as one of the most powerful dragons, claiming the ability to bring about Armageddon if she desired. Among her numerous abilities, she can effortlessly open portals to other worlds or dimensions—an uncommon skill even among other dragons, such as Kanna and Elma, the latter being her equal in strength but lacking this power. Additionally, Lucoa, a former deity, shares this ability, implying that she frequently travels between worlds to check on Tohru.

Her tail, while seemingly poisonous, does not affect her or other dragons, and she is able to harness her control over the fire element in devastating ways. Tohru’s fire breath can manifest as anything from a massive flame burst strong enough to sweep away clouds, to an incinerating beam, or a concentrated destructive energy capable of obliterating anything in its path. Tohru has demonstrated her remarkable physical strength in several instances, including competing in a destructive game of dodgeball with dragons like Fafnir, Quetzalcoatl, and Kanna, which ended in a draw after all the participants became exhausted. Elma has also noted that Tohru is as strong as she is, with Kanna commenting that their last battle resulted in the disappearance of three islands. Even against her father, Damocles, Tohru is shown to be a formidable adversary.

Throughout the series, Tohru has displayed an array of extraordinary powers:

  • Immense Strength: As a dragon, Tohru possesses immense physical strength. She can easily create craters with a single punch, as demonstrated when she struck a purse-snatcher. Her strength allows her to grapple with powerful dragons such as Kanna and Elma.

  • Immense Health: Tohru is invulnerable to illness due to her dragon physiology, never falling sick or suffering from typical human ailments.

  • Immense Speed: Tohru can use superhuman speed, as shown when she chased down a purse-snatcher while shopping with Kobayashi.

  • Immense Reflexes: In her fight with Elma, Tohru matched her opponent’s rapid barrage of attacks, countering each blow with precision.

  • Regeneration: Tohru can regenerate her body, including her tail, which she once cut off in an attempt to feed it to Kobayashi.

  • Immense Durability: Even after being struck by a sword from a god in her homeworld, Tohru survived long enough to be saved by Kobayashi. She also sustains no significant injuries after her intense battle with Elma, despite their equal strength.

  • Unlimited Stamina: As a dragon, Tohru does not need sleep to function, though she does experience tiredness during colder seasons. She can go for extended periods without rest, having endured endless battles in her homeworld without sleep for years.

  • Shapeshifting: Tohru can freely transform into a human form, choosing any outfit she desires. Her tail and horns often remain visible by her own choice.

  • Fire Breath: Tohru’s primary method of attack is her fire breath. She can release flames of various intensities, from powerful blasts capable of clearing skies to more focused beams of destruction, and even smaller bursts of concentrated energy.

  • Flight: In her dragon form, Tohru can fly with ease. In her human form, she can still use magic to propel herself through the air, as seen during her fight with Elma.

  • Sharp Teeth and Claws: Tohru possesses razor-sharp teeth and claws, enabling her to defend herself and attack with deadly precision in her dragon form.

  • Cleansing Saliva: Tohru’s saliva has a unique property—it can remove stains and dirt from clothing, making it an effective cleaning agent.

  • Portal Opening: One of Tohru’s rare abilities is the power to open portals to other worlds or dimensions, a feat that sets her apart from many other dragons.

  • Poison: Her tail is poisonous, but Tohru is immune to its effects, even when she ingests it.

  • Clairvoyance: Tohru can see through solid objects, often using this ability to check Kobayashi’s pockets while doing laundry.

  • Perception Blocking: Tohru can make herself or others invisible, using this power to avoid detection when necessary.

Tohru’s vast array of powers makes her one of the most formidable and versatile dragons in existence, though her deep love for Kobayashi often leads her to use these abilities in ways that prioritize her human companion’s safety and happiness.

Relationships

  • Kobayashi
Tohru is deeply in love with Kobayashi, and her devotion to her is unwavering. She does everything she can to serve Kobayashi as her maid, hoping one day that Kobayashi will reciprocate her romantic feelings. Throughout the story, Tohru humorously attempts to feed Kobayashi her tail (after detoxifying it) as a display of affection, though this never succeeds. Over time, it becomes evident that Kobayashi has begun to return Tohru’s feelings in a more romantic way.

  • Elma
Once close friends, Tohru and Elma’s relationship soured when Tohru became disgusted by Elma’s gluttony. Elma’s worshippers often bribed her with food, leading Tohru to destroy a temple dedicated to her. This caused a fierce rivalry between the two. However, through Kobayashi’s efforts, the two managed to reconcile and establish a truce.

  • Kanna Kamui
Tohru and Kanna have a strong bond, having known each other for a long time. Tohru is a sort of older sister figure to Kanna, taking the time to teach her about the human world and looking after her well-being. Their relationship is one of care and mutual respect.

  • Takiya Makoto
Initially, Tohru disliked Takiya, suspecting him of being attracted to Kobayashi. Though she tolerated him for Kobayashi’s sake, her opinion of him softened when she saw how well he got along with Fafnir. His kindness toward Fafnir, particularly when he recommended that Fafnir stay with him, helped change her perception of Takiya.

  • Lucoa
Lucoa is one of Tohru’s old friends, and the two share a close relationship. Prior to moving to the human world, Lucoa would frequently travel between worlds to check on Tohru, often visiting Kobayashi’s apartment. Lucoa deeply cares for Tohru’s well-being, and their friendship remains strong despite the distance.

  • Fafnir
Tohru and Fafnir share a history as fellow Chaos dragons. They initially clashed over cave territory, but over time, they came to understand each other. Although Fafnir is distrustful of humans, Tohru helped convince him to coexist with them after he decided to live in the human world. They maintain a cautious but respectful camaraderie.

  • Damocles
Tohru’s relationship with her father, Damocles, is strained. He disapproves of her choice to live as Kobayashi’s maid and despises humans. Damocles attempts to reclaim Tohru and return her to their homeworld, even resorting to a battle in their dragon forms. Despite his insistence, Tohru refuses to return, especially after Kobayashi stands up for her, which leads Damocles to call her foolish and insolent.

  • Ilulu
Tohru and Ilulu, both Chaos dragons, have a complicated relationship. Their initial encounter was marked by conflict when Tohru fought Ilulu and banished her from the human world for attempting to destroy it. When Kobayashi later took Ilulu in, Tohru’s disapproval grew, particularly over Ilulu’s freeloading attitude. However, Tohru eventually accompanies Ilulu in finding a job, which marks the beginning of a more amicable relationship between the two dragons.

  • Bandit Girl
The last human Tohru communicates with before her mission against the gods of her world is Bandit Girl. Tohru reflects on how her encounter with Bandit Girl inspired her to become Kobayashi’s maid, as she felt it gave her a new sense of purpose. Tohru expresses a desire to meet Bandit Girl again in the future, holding the encounter as a significant moment in her life.
