In her human form, Kanna has striking white-lavender hair styled in twin ponytails, complemented by vivid blue eyes. Her appearance is often praised by Riko Saikawa, who finds her irresistibly cute. Kanna’s fashion is notably distinctive, combining gothic lolita elements with a tribal flair, a style she often wears courtesy of Kobayashi. Her typical outfit consists of a white capelet with a fur collar, a pink blouse, a frilly white skirt, and delicate pink doll shoes. She ties her hair into pigtails, each adorned with three dark blue beads, further emphasizing her playful and unique style.

In the anime, Kanna’s hair has an extra touch of purple at the tips, enhancing her ethereal look. During warmer months, she switches to a light pink frock, while a soft yellow nightgown is her choice for sleepwear.

Personality

Kanna accuses Kobayashi and Tohru of inappropriate behavior.

Kanna is a soft-spoken and reserved character, often conveying her emotions through subtle expressions rather than overt actions. Despite being technically older than her human peers, she exhibits the behavior of a child, easily growing bored with routine and delighting in playful activities. Though she tends to keep her feelings hidden, Kanna is not without deep emotions. This is especially clear when she has an emotional outburst, such as when she cries after Riko Saikawa initially perceives her as a rival rather than a potential friend.

Kanna also displays a hint of romantic affection towards Riko, expressing a desire for a bond similar to the one between Kobayashi and Tohru. She is deeply grateful for the friendships she forms, particularly with Kobayashi, and cherishes these connections. According to Tohru, Kanna has a mischievous streak, enjoying pranks as a way to seek attention, a habit that stemmed from her attempts to gain her parents’ notice.

When Kanna first enters the human world, she is curious and somewhat distrustful of many modern objects. However, she quickly becomes fascinated with the new experiences around her. Once she discovers something she enjoys, she can become possessive, as seen when she refuses to leave Kobayashi’s side, even after initially being wary of her. Kanna’s affection extends to others as well, including Tohru and, briefly, Riko Saikawa.

Kanna is naturally observant and inquisitive, though she often finds herself uncertain about how to navigate the complexities of human interactions. She is unsure of how to bond with her classmates, leading her to question whether she fits in with the modern world.

Background

As a consequence of her mischievous pranks, Kanna is temporarily exiled to the human world as a form of punishment, where she is left to reflect on her behavior. This exile serves as a means for her to reconsider her actions and learn from the experience, setting the stage for her eventual integration into the modern world.

Plot

After discovering that Tohru survived her last battle with a god and now lives in the human world, Kanna sets out to find her, hoping to convince her to return to their dragon world. However, when Tohru refuses to go back, Kanna, feeling betrayed, accuses Kobayashi of seducing Tohru. With no place else to turn, Kanna reluctantly accepts Kobayashi’s offer to stay with her.

As the series progresses, Kanna expresses a desire to attend a human school, prompting Kobayashi to enroll her at Oborozuka Elementary. Along with Tohru, Kobayashi accompanies Kanna on a shopping trip for school supplies. Through these experiences, Kanna grows closer to Kobayashi and Tohru, forming a deep, familial bond with them as she adjusts to her new life in the human world.

Abilities

Kanna is creating electricity.

As a dragon, Kanna possesses superhuman strength, capable of feats such as throwing Tohru several miles into the air and holding her own against Lucoa and Fafnir in a high-stakes game of dodgeball.

Kanna also has the ability to generate and manipulate electricity. Unlike Tohru, who can freely generate mana to fuel her magic, Kanna must absorb mana from her surroundings. However, the human world contains little ambient mana, making it difficult for her to replenish her energy. To overcome this, Kanna discovers that she can recharge her mana by plugging her tail into an electrical socket.

Due to her youth and lack of experience, Kanna is unable to perform some of the more advanced spells that Tohru can, such as Perception Blocking, though she continues to develop her magical abilities over time.

Relationships

    • Tohru
Kanna deeply respects and cherishes Tohru, often addressing her as “Lady Tohru” or “Tohru-sama.” It is hinted that the two shared a close bond in their dragon world, frequently playing and bathing together. Tohru refers to Kanna as a former acquaintance, and once Kanna moves in with Kobayashi, Tohru takes on the role of teaching her about the human world. Kanna is protective of Tohru, desiring to spend as much time as possible with her. Over time, it becomes clear that Kanna views Tohru as an older sibling, forming a strong, familial connection with the older dragon.

    • Kobayashi
Initially, Kanna was distrustful of Kobayashi, largely due to her preconceived notions about humans. This led her to accuse Kobayashi of seducing Tohru and preventing her from returning to their world. However, after clearing up the misunderstanding, Kobayashi welcomes Kanna into her home, alongside Tohru. Despite her initial wariness, Kanna quickly becomes attached to Kobayashi, often seen clinging to her, holding her hand, or hugging her waist. She openly expresses her desire for Kobayashi’s attention, coming to view her as a maternal figure in her life.

    • Riko Saikawa
Riko is Kanna’s human friend and classmate, and the two share a close bond, often partnering up for school activities. When Kanna is invited to Riko’s house for the first time, she reveals her desire for a relationship with Riko similar to the one between Tohru and Kobayashi, suggesting that she may harbor romantic feelings for her. Kanna calls Riko “Saikawa,” a name she adopted after the other children introduced them this way. Kanna longs to become closer to Riko, and their growing friendship plays a key role in Kanna’s social development.

    • Kimun Kamui
Kanna yearns for her father’s approval and affection. In her attempts to gain his attention, she destroyed an important artifact, which led to her abandonment. After a painful visit to him, Kanna expresses her frustration, demanding that she create a new dragon ball to repair the damage she caused. Her relationship with her father is strained and filled with unresolved emotional turmoil.

    • Chloe
Kanna is immediately grateful to Chloe for her kindness in New York, where Chloe helped her during a difficult moment. The two quickly became friends during Kanna’s runaway trip, and Kanna played a key role in rescuing Chloe after she was kidnapped. Kanna also helped Chloe return to her home in Minnesota, and the two later reconnect at school. Chloe is one of the few humans who knows the truth about Kanna’s true nature as a dragon, making their bond even more special.
