Appearance
Fuko’s full apperance.
Fuko is a petite and youthful-looking girl, often standing out as one of the shortest characters in Clannad, giving her a childlike and innocent presence.
The She typically wears her Hikarizaka Private High School uniform, with her hair styled in a low ponytail secured by a large periwinkle ribbon. Her hair is a dark blend of greenish-gray and brown, complementing her droopy golden-yellow eyes, which give her a soft, dreamy expression.noticeable way to distinguish Kyou from her twin is through their eyes:
Personality
Fuko is an incredibly energetic and childlike girl, known for her deep obsession with starfish. She spends much of her time alone, carving small wooden starfish figures with a carving knife, which she lovingly gifts to others.
Her passion for starfish often distracts her from everything else, leaving her unaware of the world around her. Fuko is so enamored with starfish that she frequently daydreams about them, completely lost in her thoughts, and no one ever seems to interrupt her.
Fuko has a unique way of speaking, always referring to herself in the third person, which adds to her quirky charm. She has a soft spot for Ushio Okazaki, whom she adores, while her interactions with Tomoya Okazaki and Youhei Sunohara are often rude, though she deeply values her friendship with Tomoya.
Whenever anyone insults starfish, Fuko immediately defends them, insisting that it is very rude to speak ill of them.
According to her older sister, Kouko Ibuki, Fuko’s personality remains unchanged since her teenage years, despite having spent a long period in a coma. Fuko still sees herself as a freshman, maintaining the same innocent, starfish-obsessed outlook on life.
Clannad
Tomoya first encounters Fuko in an empty classroom, where she’s carving a block of wood with a knife. Concerned for her safety after noticing she’s hurting herself, he confiscates the knife, though he eventually returns it the next day.
As Tomoya gets to know Fuko, he learns that she’s carving wooden starfish, which everyone mistakenly believes to be regular stars. Fuko plans to give them to all the students in the school, hoping they’ll attend her sister Kouko’s wedding. The problem, however, is that no one knows who Kouko is—she retired from teaching art three years ago and is hardly remembered by anyone. Fuko is so obsessed with starfish that she frequently drifts into daydreams about them at any time of day, a habit that no one ever bothers to interrupt. Tomoya, amused by her distraction, takes the opportunity to play harmless pranks on her.
After learning of Fuko’s tragic accident and her existence as an ikiryō (a spirit that lingers in the world), both Nagisa and Tomoya decide to help Fuko achieve her goal of seeing her sister’s wedding come to fruition. However, they soon discover that Fuko’s spiritual powers are fading, causing her to slowly disappear from everyone’s memories. The real Fuko, in a hospital, has stopped breathing, and her existence is tied to her spiritual energy.
Determined to make her dream a reality, Tomoya persuades Koumura to help organize the wedding on May 18th. Through much effort and many challenges, Kouko’s wedding is a success, and all those who received a starfish carving attend, fulfilling Fuko’s wish.
After the wedding, Fuko expresses her heartfelt gratitude to Tomoya before congratulating her sister and fading away. Following her disappearance, Kouko and Yusuke visit Fuko’s hospital room to thank her for everything she did.
In the aftermath of the wedding, Fuko occasionally appears in random moments, particularly in tense situations, attempting to help. However, her presence doesn’t truly solve any of the problems, and she remains an ethereal figure, offering a sense of comfort but not direct aid.
After Story
In a miraculous turn of events, Fuko awakens from her coma during the After Story arc. Despite having been in a coma for seven years, her personality remains frozen at the age of fifteen, and she carries the same childlike enthusiasm and quirks that endeared her to everyone years ago.
Fuko quickly becomes enamored with Ushio Okazaki, frequently visiting her and playing together. She even attempts to take Ushio away from Tomoya, much to his frustration. Though Kouko is also often present, it’s clear that Fuko’s focus is squarely on Ushio. Her behavior, though well-meaning, tends to annoy both Tomoya and Kouko, but Ushio, ever the accepting and kind-hearted child, affectionately refers to Fuko as “the weird girl,” a title that only endears her more to Fuko.
In The Road Home, Fuko and Kouko make their first appearance, and Fuko immediately bonds with Ushio, though her eccentricities and attempts to whisk Ushio away from Tomoya spark tension between her and the father. However, Ushio, with her genuine warmth, welcomes Fuko’s friendship with open arms, showing a remarkable understanding for the quirky girl.
In The Tidal Breeze’s Mischief, Fuko visits the Okazaki apartment to spend time with Ushio, and the two share a meal with Tomoya. Despite their playful bickering, there is a subtle warmth in their interactions as they bond over a game of cards. Later, Fuko finds Ushio standing outside Hikarizaka General Hospital during the evening. Concerned for her safety, Fuko warns Ushio about the dangers of wandering alone at night and escorts her home, showing a protective side toward the child.
Fuko continues to be a comforting, albeit somewhat eccentric, presence in Ushio’s life. In Under the Green Tree, she shares a peaceful moment with Ushio and Tomoya under the same tree where Nagisa’s father once fervently prayed for Nagisa’s survival. As Fuko becomes an integral part of the Okazaki family’s life, her presence is a reminder of the miraculous events that brought them all closer together, a sign of the enduring connections between them.
