Haruna

Haruna (ハルナ, Haruna) is a Mahou-Shoujo in training hailing from the world of Villiers. She is a dedicated student of Ariel, her mentor, who guides her on the path to mastering magical abilities. During one of her training sessions, an unexpected incident occurs when her magic is unintentionally absorbed by Ayumu Aikawa. This event forces Haruna to remain with him, resulting in a unique and often comical dynamic between the two as they navigate the challenges of her training and their growing relationship.

Haruna’s full appearance.

Haruna appears younger than many of the other characters, which is accentuated by her shorter stature. She has short, tousled brown hair that frames her face, and her distinctive purple eyes give her a vibrant look. One of her notable features is a small fang that peeks out when she smiles, adding a touch of charm to her overall appearance. Her youthful demeanor and playful personality contribute to her endearing presence in the series.

Personality

Haruna has a quirky obsession with fried eggs, showcasing her culinary skills by creating bento boxes filled solely with them—often referred to as “rolled omelettes” in the English dub. She has a playful tendency to label herself a “genius,” despite many of her endeavors resulting in humorous mishaps. Her interactions often highlight her childish demeanor; she has been known to playfully beat up Ayumu and get upset over trivial matters, emphasizing her youthful spirit.

She treats Eucliwood like a little sister, reflecting her nurturing side. However, her self-proclaimed genius status comes with the downside of having a poor memory for names and details of assignments, as she only retains information that piques her interest. Ayumu’s name, however, stands out as an exception, indicating the special place he holds in her heart.

Haruna’s feelings for Ayumu are evident, particularly in episode 9 when she reacts with jealousy after he accidentally kisses Tomonori, even if it was due to a misunderstanding involving her. Her frustration leads her to turn what was meant to be a romantic date into a group outing, highlighting her desire to be close to him.

In episode 11, her concern for Ayumu is palpable when she finds him in a compromising situation with Nagaleria, leading her to flee home in tears, convinced that he has turned into a “sexual predator.” This reaction underscores her emotional investment in their relationship, showcasing her protective nature and her struggle to navigate her feelings amidst the chaos of their lives.

Background

Haruna is a lively, energetic Masou-Shoujo (magical garment girl) from Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?, known for her colorful personality and unwavering confidence. Hailing from a mysterious magical world, Haruna possesses strong magical powers, primarily used for hunting Megalos, monstrous creatures threatening human lives. However, she is prone to making bold, reckless decisions, often leaping into battle without fully assessing the situation, showcasing her impulsive nature. This spirited approach sometimes leads to humorous interactions with her friends, especially when she loses her magical powers and becomes reliant on Ayumu, the zombie protagonist of the series, for protection.

In addition to her magical abilities, Haruna’s cooking skills, though highly questionable, are an integral part of her character. Her unique personality adds both comedic and heartfelt moments to the series, making her a memorable and beloved character.

Abilities and Equipments

  • Mystletainn: Haruna wields a magical pink chainsaw known as Mystletainn, which is capable of slicing through monsters, trees, and even humans. This powerful weapon not only enables her to transform into a Mahou-Shoujo but can also communicate with her, adding a unique element to their bond. Haruna demonstrates remarkable proficiency with Mystletainn, showcasing her skill even while engaged in other activities, such as playing video games. One of her signature attacks, the “Mystletainn Kick,” is a misnomer, as it refers to a chainsaw attack rather than an actual kick. When Ayumu accidentally stole her powers, his name appeared on Mystletainn instead of hers. In episode 11, during their confrontation with the King of the Night, both Haruna and Ayumu gained control of Mystletainn thanks to “Dai-sensei’s” power, leading to both of their names being displayed on the weapon.

  • Genius Intellect: Despite her tendency to make bold claims and having a short-term memory for trivial matters, Haruna possesses a genius-level intellect when it comes to complex topics, particularly those that are meaningful to her, such as Ayumu. For instance, when Mystletainn was damaged due to Ayumu’s mistake, she initially struggled to fix it, having no prior knowledge of its inner workings. However, she quickly grasped the basics, managed to understand its intricate mechanisms, and was able to explain how Mystletainn functioned while repairing it—all before the next day. Unfortunately, her clumsiness led to another mishap, causing Mystletainn to break again because she was too fatigued to check for missing parts, including a crucial screw. This incident showcases both her brilliance and her occasional lack of attention to detail.
