Emma

Emma (エマ, Ema) is the central character in The Promised Neverland.

As a compassionate and outgoing individual, Emma stands out as one of the most dependable orphans in her group, often surrounded by her friends. She is recognized for her exceptional learning capabilities, impressive athletic skills, and unwavering optimism.

Among the children residing at Grace Field House Plant 3, Emma is regarded as one of the top three “Premium quality goods,” alongside her companions Norman and Ray.

Following a successful escape from Grace Field with Ray and thirteen other orphans, Emma embarks on a quest to locate William Minerva. She believes that he holds the key to a safe and peaceful future for her and her friends, free from the threat of demons.

Emma’s full appearance.

Emma is a young girl with fair skin and a slender build. She possesses striking emerald, oval-shaped eyes and notably thin eyebrows. Her short, messy hair is a light orange hue, styled in a way that sticks up in various directions. It is parted to the right, with one long lock curving upwards from the parting and another strand cascading from the nape of her neck. While the manga does not emphasize this detail as much, her hair appears to darken slightly toward the ends, transitioning from a pale yellow-orange to a deeper shade.

She wears the standard uniform of Grace Field House, which consists of a simple white long-sleeved button-up shirt and a white skirt, complemented by brown boots. Emma’s identification number, “63194,” is prominently displayed on the left side of her neck.

During her escape from Grace Field House, Emma sacrificed her left ear to evade capture by Isabella, which she covered with a bandage. She also began wearing a necklace featuring an eye-shaped pendant, a gift from Mujika, whose design reflects elements associated with the Cuvitidala.

In 2046, Emma transitions away from the standard Grace Field uniform, opting instead for long black pants, a long-sleeved white shirt, and her familiar brown boots. She accessorizes this look with a white bow around her neck.

During the Goldy Pond Battle Arc, Emma starts braiding a small section of her hair on the left side to conceal her missing ear. She uses a green hair clip along with two crossing yellow and blue hair clips gifted to her by Sandy to secure the braid. Her attire becomes much more vibrant during this arc, featuring a red long-sleeved shirt, a cropped yellow jacket with green accents, and blue jeans, all paired with her trusty brown boots.

By 2047, Emma has returned to her long-sleeved white shirt, black pants, brown boots, bow, and necklace, while still braiding her hair to hide her ear. Now thirteen years old, she has developed a more slender physique and grown taller, reaching approximately 160 cm, with her hair also slightly longer.

By 2049, after her arrival in the Human World, Emma continues to grow taller and gains a more robust frame. Due to the cold environment, she starts wearing warm fur coats. With her past memories lost, her identification as a farm resident has also faded.

Emma is characterized by her boundless optimism, outgoing nature, and a lively spirit, traits that sharply contrast with Norman’s more fragile physique and Ray’s introverted demeanor. She is playful and enjoys games like tag and hide-and-seek with her siblings. As an elder sister figure, Emma exhibits immense love and care for her fellow orphans. However, her cheerful disposition undergoes a significant transformation after discovering Conny’s corpse and the dark truth about Grace Field and Isabella. This event leads her to resolve never to cry again, committing herself to her beliefs and choices.

Her love for her family drives her desire to escape, as she refuses to leave anyone behind, motivated by compassion and selflessness. Emma is notably forgiving; despite Ray’s role as a “traitor,” she continues to embrace him as a friend and shows empathy towards him. Krone notes that Emma often prioritizes others over herself, sometimes at the cost of her own safety. She is impulsive, brave, and resolute, willing to face danger to protect her loved ones and even strangers.

Though she excels academically and learns quickly, Emma is also seen as somewhat silly and air-headed. Her ambition to save every orphan from Grace Field House is considered unattainable, yet her belief in its possibility earns her the label of an “airhead” from Ray. Her strong optimism sometimes leads her to make significant decisions unilaterally, such as cutting off her ear during the escape without prior discussion. However, she gradually learns to depend more on her friends and family, gaining wisdom from their experiences. Despite her idealistic and naive tendencies, Emma is fiercely honest and possesses an unyielding will, refusing to give up even in dire situations. Ray observes that her ability to challenge the impossible is a unique aspect of her character.

While Emma maintains a cheerful and kind demeanor, she can adopt a serious attitude when circumstances demand it, especially concerning the safety of the children. If her loved ones are threatened, she is not afraid to show her assertive side. After learning of Ray’s betrayal, she confronts him about whether he has manipulated the shipping dates of other children, making it clear that she would not tolerate further sacrifices.

Post-escape, Emma begins to embrace a leadership role, determined to safeguard her family. She immerses herself in learning about hunting and firearms, showing a steely resolve in dangerous situations, which Leuvis remarks gives her “the eyes of a killer.” Although Emma refers to herself as a huntress, her approach differs fundamentally from that of the demons. When arriving at Shelter B06-32, she secures assistance from Mister by threatening to blow up the shelter with Ray, all while maintaining her characteristic cheerful demeanor.

Despite her leadership abilities, Emma grapples with self-doubt regarding her decisions. Her greatest fear is making the wrong choice and endangering her family, often internalizing her feelings of guilt. She finds it challenging to express her true emotions, confiding only in Ray about her struggles. Even when encouraged to rely on others, she tends to shoulder her burdens alone, prioritizing her family’s safety over her own well-being. Emma even considers sacrificing her identity and memories to ensure the safety of every cattle child.

As a peaceful individual, Emma prefers dialogue over confrontation, even when faced with life-threatening situations. While she harbors animosity toward most demons for their predatory nature, she forms a bond with Mujika, recognizing that demons have families and friends too. Emma strongly opposes Norman’s genocidal plans against demons, believing in a compassionate approach that avoids shortcuts and violence. She chooses instead to reform the ancient “Promise” and enter The Seven Walls—a task seen as reckless and nearly impossible—rather than resorting to mass extermination.

History

Emma was born at Grace Field on August 22, 2034, and she was transferred to Plantation 3 in 2035. Her childhood was filled with joy, nurtured by the care of Isabella and the companionship of her fellow orphans. Among the children at Grace Field, Emma shared a particularly close bond with Norman and Ray, likely due to their similar ages and their status as top academic performers.

In January 2039, during a snowball fight, Norman fainted from the cold and had to be quarantined in the sickbay of the orphanage. Unable to bear being apart from her dear friend, Emma attempted to sneak into the sickbay to keep him company. However, her efforts were thwarted repeatedly by Isabella, who forbade her from getting too close to Norman for fear of his illness spreading to her. Eventually, Emma devised a way to communicate with him using a tin can telephone, allowing them to chat joyfully through the night with other orphans.

In November 2039, Emma and Norman encouraged Ray to take a break from his books and join them in exploring the gate that surrounded Grace Field House. Once at the gate, the trio contemplated what lay beyond the walls. Emma, brimming with excitement, expressed her dream of riding a giraffe outside, though Ray dismissed her whimsical idea. The children recalled Isabella’s warnings about the dangers of venturing too close to the gate or beyond the fence, which ultimately led them to return to the orphanage.

Skills and Abilities

Intelligence
Emma is recognized as one of the three prodigies at Grace Field House Plant 3. While she may not match Norman or Ray’s intellectual prowess, she competes with them effectively. Initially, Emma struggled with her test scores, but with Ray’s guidance, she gradually achieved perfect scores, eventually excelling consistently in her studies. Her remarkable learning ability allows her to excel academically, and she boasts an impressive memory; she once claimed it was easy to remember ten types of team formations. Additionally, Emma has demonstrated her knowledge of Morse code.

Emma possesses a unique ability to quickly adapt techniques learned from others, as evidenced by her ability to imitate Yugo’s stealthy movements to evade detection by demons. Her lateral thinking and keen perception enable her to grasp complex concepts, such as understanding how the world within the Seven Walls changes based on the merging of conscious and unconscious thoughts. This insight allowed her to access the dimension where the Demon King resides, a feat that even Ray could not achieve. “Him” noted that Emma’s mind is exceptional, describing it as “delicious” and beyond the comprehension of her world.

Her emotional intelligence is also noteworthy; she skillfully manipulates her expressions and feelings, successfully deceiving even Isabella during tense moments.

Agility
Emma’s athleticism grants her exceptional physical capabilities and reflexes. Among her peers at Grace Field, she possesses the most energy and stamina. This physical prowess was highlighted during games of hide-and-seek at Grace Field, where she was typically the last child found, often only caught by Norman’s strategic thinking.

Skilled Accuracy
Emma’s combination of physical ability and intellect facilitates her learning in combat and hunting. When tasked with selecting weapons for their journey to Goldy Pond, she opted for a hand bow. Throughout their travels, Emma demonstrated her marksmanship by using the bow to effectively defend herself against demons, notably killing a man-eater with precise aim. She has also shown proficiency with rifles.

Enhanced Stamina
Emma has displayed remarkable stamina, allowing her to keep pace with Ray and Mister for extended periods without fatigue. She has endured brutal attacks from adversaries yet continued to fight. This resilience was first showcased during her battle with Leuvis, where she sustained serious injuries from his powerful claws but persisted in combat until he was defeated. Although she collapsed afterward, she managed to recover while at Shelter B06-32.

Relationships

Norman
Emma and Norman have been inseparable since childhood, spending countless moments together and developing a deep bond. Emma considers Norman one of her closest friends and someone precious to her, and they both care profoundly for each other’s well-being. Their willingness to sacrifice for one another is evident, as they have repeatedly risked their lives to protect each other.

After uncovering the truth about their orphanage, Emma expresses gratitude for Norman’s support, especially during her breakdown following Conny’s death. His comforting presence inspired her to remain strong and pursue their escape alongside their siblings. Emma trusts Norman implicitly, viewing him as a crucial ally due to his intelligence. She often confides in him about her thoughts and feelings, despite being oblivious to the depth of his affections for her.

Following Norman’s shipment, Emma fell into despair but became even more determined to escape, motivated by the need to honor Norman’s efforts. His absence left a significant impact on her, yet he remains a driving force behind her resilience. Emma frequently references Norman and commits to fulfilling the promises she made to him before his departure, including achieving his dreams in the human world.

When Emma reunites with Norman two years later and realizes he is alive, she is overcome with emotion, embracing him joyfully. Their bond remains intact despite the time apart, and she expresses happiness that he has not changed. However, Emma becomes increasingly uncomfortable with Norman’s genocidal plans against demons. Despite their differing worldviews, she refuses to let their ideological clashes damage their friendship, assuring him that she will not allow him to suffer alone. Emma empathizes with the burdens he bears and is determined to support him, even if they disagree on fundamental issues.

After Norman enacts his plan, Emma recognizes his inner conflict and fears, understanding that he didn’t truly want to commit genocide. She challenges him on his choices while offering reassurance that he is not alone. Their relationship evolves as they reconcile and vow to share their burdens as friends.

Ray
Emma and Ray have been best friends since they were toddlers, their contrasting personalities—Emma’s optimism and Ray’s seriousness—occasionally leading to clashes but ultimately strengthening their bond. They care deeply for one another and consistently support each other through difficult times, allowing their friendship to flourish despite disagreements. Emma encourages Ray to be more open and adventurous, while he urges her to express her true feelings.

When they uncover the dark truth about their home, Ray is one of the few individuals Emma trusts to strategize their escape. Despite initially feeling betrayed by Ray’s past actions, she embraces him as family and empathizes with his suffering. Emma opposes Ray’s willingness to sacrifice himself for their plan, emphasizing her commitment to his safety. Their friendship grows stronger as they escape Grace Field, becoming protective of one another and relying on each other’s strengths.

Emma values Ray’s opinions and confides in him, seeking his guidance during challenging moments. Although they experience differences in beliefs, Ray chooses to support Emma’s decisions, reinforcing their mutual trust and respect.

Gilda
Emma shares a close friendship with Gilda, viewing her as a sisterly figure. Their bond is strengthened by their shared experiences at the orphanage, and Emma trusts Gilda deeply, believing in her loyalty even when others doubted her. Gilda often looks out for Emma’s safety, and Emma appreciates her protective nature, finding comfort in Gilda’s concern.

Don
Growing up together, Emma and Don share a sibling-like bond characterized by mutual care and trust. Emma relies on Don as one of her first allies in their escape plan, realizing that he possesses more maturity than she initially thought. As their friendship deepens, Emma respects Don’s insights and entrusts him with important decisions, valuing his perspective even when they disagree.

Phil
Emma cherishes her relationship with Phil, seeing him as a precious younger brother. They enjoy playing together, and Emma takes her role as his protector seriously. When Emma struggles with Norman’s departure, Phil comforts her with a heartfelt hug, showcasing their strong bond. Emma confides in Phil about the orphanage’s truth, signifying her trust in him, and vows to return for him and their siblings after escaping Grace Field House.

Conny
Emma has always looked out for Conny, whom she sees as a younger sister. Conny’s tragic death deeply traumatizes Emma, serving as a catalyst for her resolve to escape and prevent further suffering among her siblings. Conny’s memory drives Emma’s determination to create a future where children are safe, and she holds her dear in her heart.

Isabella
Emma initially views Isabella as a beloved mother figure, but this perception shatters upon discovering Isabella’s true role in their lives as a facilitator for their eventual demise. Despite the betrayal, Emma’s feelings toward Isabella remain complex; she still sees her as an important figure, as illustrated by her near-death vision where Isabella inspires her to continue fighting.

Mujika
Emma’s relationship with Mujika evolves from initial skepticism to a profound friendship. As they bond, Emma learns to see demons differently, ultimately considering Mujika a savior who has significantly impacted her journey. Mujika’s gift of a necklace symbolizes their connection, and Emma is fiercely protective of her, refusing to let harm come to her friend.

Sonju
Emma’s initial fear of Sonju dissipates as she gets to know him better, especially upon learning that he does not consume human flesh. She respects him greatly and seeks his guidance in hunting and survival skills. Emma considers both Sonju and Mujika dear friends and saviors, standing firmly against any plans that would threaten their lives.

Yugo
Emma’s relationship with Yugo begins on shaky ground due to his animosity toward her, but she ultimately chooses forgiveness. As they work together, Emma begins to see Yugo as a mentor and father figure. His encouragement and wisdom become instrumental in her growth, and Emma is devastated by his death, promising to continue fighting for the sake of the cattle children in his memory.

Peter Ratri
Emma harbors a strong hatred for Peter Ratri and his actions, yet she approaches him with a desire for understanding rather than violence. Despite her disdain, Emma empathizes with his situation, believing he could change if given the chance. Her compassion resonates with Peter, ultimately impacting his perspective on life. Upon his death, Emma vows to prove him wrong by achieving a future for all children.
