Chika Fujiwara

Chika Fujiwara (藤原 千花,Fujiwara Chika) is one of the central characters in the Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai series. She is introduced as a third-year high school student at Shuchi’in Academy, where she plays a significant role as a member of the Tabletop Gaming Club. Additionally, Chika serves as the secretary of both the 67th and 68th Student Council.

It’s okay if you’re not perfect. What’s important is that you keep trying!
— Chika Fujiwara

Origin

Chika Fujiwara draws inspiration from Kuramochi no Miko (車持 皇子), the second suitor in The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. In the story, Kuramochi no Miko is tasked with locating the Jeweled Branch from Hourai. This character is generally believed to be based on Fujiwara no Fuhito (藤原 不比等), whose mother’s maiden name was kuruma ji (車持).

Chika’s tendency to cheat during games is a nod to her counterpart’s attempt to present Princess Kaguya with a forgery. Interestingly, all members of her family have names inspired by plants, subtly referencing the branch.

Her surname, “Fujiwara,” is derived from the historical Fujiwara clan, a prominent family that played a significant role in Japanese politics throughout the centuries.

Chika’s full appearance.

Chika Fujiwara is depicted as an adorable young girl with a fair complexion and shoulder-length silver hair, which appears light pink in the anime adaptation. Her hair features a distinctive black bow nestled among her square bangs, accentuating her playful charm. With bright blue eyes that convey her lively spirit, she stands just slightly shorter than Kaguya Shinomiya. Notably, Kaguya observes that Chika has a noticeably ample chest size, adding to her youthful allure.

Chika typically wears the standard Shuchi’in Academy high school uniform, which complements her cheerful personality. On occasion, she opts for a slightly high ponytail, giving her an even more dynamic look that reflects her energetic nature.

Chika Fujiwara is characterized by her bubbly and eccentric demeanor, always sporting a cheerful smile. Her playful nature leads her to seek fun and entertainment with her fellow student council members, often brainstorming quirky activities that amuse both herself and others. However, her lack of awareness about the surrounding atmosphere makes her an unpredictable force, frequently disrupting the carefully laid plans of Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane, who aim to elicit confessions. Additionally, her antics pose a challenge for Ai Hayasaka, who sees Chika as a threat to her own objectives.

Despite her seemingly carefree and childlike attitude, many council members, particularly Kaguya, perceive her as simple-minded. Ironically, Chika possesses a wealth of talent, excelling as an accomplished pianist and being fluent in five languages. Her cunning side emerges during games, as she often attempts to cheat, though her efforts are invariably thwarted.

Chika harbors a fascination with love and self-identifies as a “love detective,” offering relationship advice to others despite her lack of romantic experience. While she can exhibit surprising insight, particularly regarding the feelings of Yu Ishigami and Miko Iino, she remains blissfully unaware of the dynamics between Kaguya and Miyuki.

In a lighthearted twist, the final omake chapter humorously labels her as “dumb,” highlighting the notion that high intelligence can lead to suffering, while a simpler mindset may allow for a more genuine enjoyment of life.

History

Chika Fujiwara hails from a prestigious political family, with her great-grandfather having served as prime minister and her uncle currently holding the position of minister of the right. This lineage grants her a significant legacy, but her upbringing has been nurturing, filled with love, albeit somewhat overprotective. As a result, Chika has grown into a genuinely kind-hearted individual. However, her family’s strict rules against recreational activities, such as video games, led her to explore unconventional hobbies as a means of escape.

Chika has developed a passion for German-style board games, puzzles, and various niche subcultures that stray far from mainstream interests. Although she detests dishonesty, her competitive spirit surfaces during games like Werewolf or Poker, where she displays an unexpected talent for bluffing.

Her friendship with Kaguya Shinomiya dates back to middle school, and she has often spent the night at Kaguya’s house. Yet, their deep bond remains largely unnoticed by others due to Kaguya’s reserved nature.

In chapter 222 of the manga, Chika reveals her initial motivation for playing the piano: a desire for perfection. She quickly becomes a prodigy, but the mounting expectations from her family and admirers drive her to practice relentlessly. Eventually, after Kaguya encourages her to abandon the piano if it no longer brings her joy, Chika decides to quit. Shortly thereafter, she challenges Kaguya to a game battle, wagering friendship on the outcome, and ultimately becomes Kaguya’s first true friend.

The epilogue offers limited insight into Chika’s future. While it hints at her potential role as a political aide to her father, it also suggests that she may live with Hayasaka in a freeloader dynamic, struggling to reclaim her lost teenage joys. Ultimately, the story concludes with the assertion that Chika has not fallen in love with anyone, instead embodying the role of “everyone’s heroine.” This characterization positions her as a source of light and happiness for those around her, reinforcing her status as a platonic figure of admiration for both characters and fans alike.

Kaguya and Chika have been close friends since middle school, with a friendship that runs deep. Chika has expressed her affection for Kaguya so profoundly that she declared she would let go of a rope in a life-or-death situation to ensure Kaguya’s safety. This selflessness highlights the strength of their bond.

Miyuki Shirogane
Chika engages in rigorous tutoring sessions with Miyuki in volleyball, singing, and dancing. Though she often critiques his abilities, she genuinely cares for him and refers to him as akin to a son. This maternal instinct is evident when she tearfully exclaims, “I raised that boy myself!” upon witnessing his achievements. However, her repeated exposure to his struggles has led her to develop anxiety-like symptoms whenever discussions about his learning come up. Despite this, Chika is possessive of her role as his teacher and feels uncomfortable with the idea of someone else stepping in.

Yu Ishigami
Chika’s relationship with Yu is characterized by playful banter and mutual teasing, with her often calling him “creepy” and him catching her cheating at games. While they appear to bicker, their interactions reveal a deeper appreciation for one another, with Chika being sympathetic to Yu’s challenges and Yu acknowledging her brilliance.

Miko Iino
Miko has idolized Chika since childhood, and their relationship is somewhat one-sided, with Chika occasionally taking advantage of Miko’s admiration. This dynamic is humorously compared to an “abusive romance” by Yu Ishigami.

Tabletop Gaming Club

Chika is part of theTabletop Gaming Club, alongside Terashima and Kozue Makihara. Although their friendship is implied to be strong, the dynamics are often underrepresented since Chika is the only main character. The trio has earned a reputation for causing mischief together.

Ai Hayasaka
Both Chika and Ai are among Kaguya Shinomiya’s closest friends, and their interactions can be quite dynamic. In her “gal mode,” Ai maintains a friendly relationship with Chika, though their connection becomes more complicated in Ai’s butler persona, where Chika is the only character she shows genuine physical attraction to. Their relationship becomes strained after a chaotic incident where Ai attempts to kiss Chika, leading to awkwardness between them. Despite the rocky start, they eventually develop a strong friendship, even collaborating to assist Kaguya in avoiding her family’s plans. Chika’s admiration for Ai’s confidence grows, leading her to jokingly state she wouldn’t mind if Ai kissed her again—if only just once. By the end of their arc, Chika’s trust in Ai is evident as she stands close by during a pivotal moment, demonstrating their evolving bond.

Etymology

The name Chika combines the characters for “thousand” (千) and “flower” or “blossom” (花) (ka).

Her surname, Fujiwara, is derived from “wisteria” (藤) (fuji) and “field” or “plain” (原) (hara/wara).

Trivia

    • Chika has multiple ribbons that she names individually.
    • Miyuki Shirogane and Yu Ishigami have no idea how Chika keeps her ribbon in her hair.
    • In Kaguya Shinomiya’s flashback, Chika claims that her IQ is 3, but the source of this number is unknown. It is likely false, considering her strong points include:

      • Speaking five different languages.
      • Being capable of deception and bluffing, especially in games.
      • Understanding Yu’s verbal abuses and sarcasm and occasionally countering them when she gets the chance.
    • Chika has taught Miyuki how to play volleyball, sing their school anthem, perform the Soran Bushi dance, ballroom dance, create balloon art, touch fish, and rap. Interestingly, Miyuki was the one who first taught Chika how to rap so she could teach him.
    • Her unpredictability makes her a significant threat to many of Ai Hayasaka’s tasks.
    • Chika’s LINE icon is a picture of a die.
    • She dislikes tomatoes.

    • She shares her birthday with Yu.
    • Chika has encountered every member of the Four Ramen Emperors of Tokyo, causing three of them to have flashbacks to their youth, indirectly reminding them of their motivations and earning their acknowledgment.
    • Chika is known to cheat in specific games, as evidenced when Shirogane caught her cheating twice in a memory game.
    • Despite her relative decline in importance in later chapters, Chika is formally considered a mascot or idol among the franchise’s fandom. In the omake for the last chapter, even Aka emphasizes this by not detailing any future for Fujiwara and declaring her “everyone’s heroine” who has never fallen in love, implying her status as a waifu.
    • Coincidentally, Chika’s English voice actress, Jad Saxton, also voices another character named Chika, Chika Takami from Love Live! Sunshine!!
