Diablo

Diablo (ディアブロ,Diaburo), also known as Noir (原初の黒ノワール,Nowāru, lit. “Primordial Black”), is one of the seven Primordial Daemons  and serves as an executive in the Jura-Tempest Federation. He acts as Rimuru Tempest’s second secretary and butler. Diablo is also the leader of the Black Numbers and holds the title of Rimuru’s most powerful subordinate, ranked among the Twelve Guardian Lords and the Top Three strongest under Rimuru’s command.

Appearance

Archdaemon

In his Archdaemon form, Diablo, also known as Noir, has black hair with striking streaks of red and gold. His eyes are a distinctive feature, with golden irises, red pupils, and black sclerae, which give him a captivating and otherworldly look. He is often dressed in princely garments, giving him an air of elegance and nobility. While his appearance is largely human-like, Diablo can reveal his true nature by unfolding his wings, symbolizing his immense power.

After evolving into a Daemon Lord, Diablo’s appearance changed very little compared to his previous form. The most noticeable difference is his wardrobe change, as his princely attire was replaced with a butler’s outfit, reflecting his unwavering desire to serve Rimuru. Despite the shift in clothing, Diablo’s sense of dignity and authority only grew stronger, enhancing his commanding presence.

Chronology

Extra: Black and a Mask

In a flashback, Noir encounters Shizu, leading to a battle where he loses an arm. Afterward, he temporarily allies with her and helps her defeat the Archdaemon Orthos. Following their victory, Shizu makes a promise to Noir to help her students.

OAD

Sometime later, Diablo fulfills his promise to Shizu by saving Tiss and Class S from a Specter. During this encounter, he grows curious about Rimuru, having learned of the slime’s existence.

A Demon Lord’s Awakening Arc

Rimuru summons Noir and two of his Greater Daemon subordinates by offering the soul-less corpses of the 10,000 fallen Falmuth soldiers. Upon summoning, Rimuru’s first command to them was to capture Razen, which they did promptly. Fascinated by Rimuru’s soul, Noir was eager to please and suggested sacrificing his subordinates to assist in the revival process. After Rimuru’s successful awakening, Noir expressed his delight in serving Rimuru and was named “Diablo” by him, evolving into a Daemon Lord.

Following this, Diablo attended a meeting to discuss future plans. He clashed with Shion when he learned that Hinata Sakaguchi had attempted to kill Rimuru and wanted to take revenge. Despite his eagerness to act, Rimuru restrained him from eliminating Ramiris when she joined the meeting.

The Octagram Soars Arc

Rimuru tasked Diablo with investigating Falmuth to cripple its economy and destabilize its leadership. Diablo began his mission to overthrow the kingdom’s current king.

Scarlet Bond Arc

Rimuru dispatched Diablo to confront Violet and stop her plans. After an intense fight, Violet realized that her subordinate had gone rogue, jeopardizing her scheme. The battle ended when Violet decided to handle the situation herself.

Conflict Between Saints and Monsters Arc

Diablo succeeded in toppling the Falmuth king and installing Youm as the new ruler. He returned to report to Rimuru about the peace treaty between Tempest and Falmuth and predicted an internal civil war. He also mentioned the Church’s possible involvement. Later, Diablo warned Rimuru about Veldora’s dangerous aura and updated him on the developments in Falmuth. After learning of Reyhiem’s murder, Diablo informed Rimuru and soon discovered that he was being framed for the crime. He defeated King Edward’s army and two of the Three Battlesages, clearing his name in the process. Diablo also exposed the crimes of the Seven Luminaries and brought the information to Rimuru.

Territory Seizure Arc

Diablo returned to greet the tribes residing in the Jura Forest and helped establish peaceful relations with them.

Opening of the Monster City Arc

Diablo played a significant role in preparing for Tempest’s grand festival. Although he showed interest in fighting Masayuki and his party, Rimuru persuaded him not to. Diablo served as an announcer during the festival and expressed his disdain for Gaiye’s arrogance. He became part of the Big Four, but was prohibited from competing in the tournament due to his overwhelming strength. Elmesia later expressed concerns about Diablo, and Rimuru reassured her that he would handle Diablo if betrayal ever occurred. When Muese attempted to take over Tempest’s financial system, Diablo, alongside Shion, saw through his plan and successfully thwarted his schemes.

Personality

Diablo is a complex character, combining whimsicality with sharp calculation when the situation demands it. He typically exudes an air of absolute composure and politeness. However, when someone disrespects or insults Rimuru, his demeanor transforms into one of chilling malice, and he will relentlessly punish the offender in the most excruciating way imaginable—unless such actions would contradict Rimuru’s direct orders. For those who share a positive relationship with Rimuru, Diablo remains cordial and amicable, although he doesn’t hesitate to subtly manipulate situations to ensure he remains as close to his beloved master as possible.

Diablo follows Rimuru’s instructions down to the smallest detail. One example of this was when Rimuru tasked him with evaluating Framea’s skills as a guard for Tempest’s guests. Diablo, interpreting the order precisely, summoned a moderately strong monster to test her. Upon seeing Framea’s courage and determination to fight despite being at a disadvantage, Diablo chose to dismiss the creature and immediately reported back to Rimuru. This illustrates Diablo’s loyalty and precision—he never deviates from his master’s intent, but he exercises freedom in his methods if the instructions leave room for interpretation.

The most significant demonstration of Diablo’s unwavering loyalty is his recruitment of hundreds of powerful daemons, including the remaining three Primordials, to serve under Rimuru. This initiative led to the formation of the Black Numbers, an elite fighting force regarded as the strongest military unit within the Jura-Tempest Federation.

Additionally, Diablo despises owing debts, even to those who are no longer alive. This trait was evident when Shizu’s replacement, Tiss, attempted a desperate summon to save Shizu’s students from a Phantom. Diablo, then unnamed, responded to her call and offered his assistance for a minimal price—insisting that his involvement never be mentioned. He then proceeded to eradicate the enemy in a truly horrifying manner, thereby fulfilling his debt and ensuring that no obligation remained.

Background

Considered strange by the other Primordials, Noir often acted solely on his whims, rarely displaying typical behavior. His unpredictable nature irritated some of his fellow Primordials. Over time, Noir ceased pursuing power because his efficiency in using it became so great that battles felt trivial to him. Despite possessing enough strength to evolve into a Daemon Lord, he chose to remain as an Archdaemon simply because the challenge had faded.

One day, driven by a whim, Noir responded to a demon summoning by the Silver Wings. This led to a chance encounter with Shizue Izawa. During their confrontation, just as Noir was about to defeat her, he was repelled by her Anti-Magic Mask, which made him realize the mask’s mysterious and incomprehensible power. Intrigued, Noir returned to the Spiritual World but continued to observe Shizue and the mask in secret.

As time passed, Noir witnessed the mask lose its power when it fell into Rimuru Tempest’s hands. He deduced that Rimuru had a connection to the mask, which seemed to possess abilities that transcended time. This convinced Noir that Rimuru held the key to uncovering the “truth of the world.”

Noir attempted to answer Rimuru’s Greater Daemon Summoning during events in the Dungeon but was unsuccessful, as his descendant Beretta responded first, much to Noir’s annoyance.

Eventually, during another Greater Daemon Summoning aimed at capturing the elusive Razen, Noir successfully answered the call, bringing two of his Greater Daemon followers with him. Following a series of events, Noir was bestowed the name “Diablo” by Rimuru, allowing him to evolve into a Daemon Lord and cement his position as one of Rimuru’s most loyal and powerful subordinates.

Trivia

  • Naming Origin: Rimuru named Diablo after the Lamborghini Diablo supercar. Another reason for the name is that “Diablo” is the Spanish word for “devil,” fitting his role as a powerful daemon.

  • Primordial Color: Diablo, also known as Noir, is one of the seven Primordial Daemons, each of whom is associated with a different color. His color is black, symbolizing darkness and mystery.

  • Unpredictable Nature: Among the Primordial Daemons, Diablo is considered the most unpredictable and whimsical. His erratic behavior often frustrated his fellow Primordials, as he acted solely on his whims.

  • Loyalty to Rimuru: Diablo’s loyalty to Rimuru is so deep that he abandoned the pursuit of strength and power in favor of following Rimuru, believing that Rimuru will uncover the “truth of the world.”

  • Fan of Battles: Though Diablo stopped seeking power for himself, he still enjoys battles that allow him to test his abilities, especially when carrying out Rimuru’s orders.

  • Personal Code: Despite his ruthless nature, Diablo has a personal code of honor. For instance, he detests owing debts, which led him to assist Shizue Izawa in battle, fulfilling a promise he made.

  • Loner Tendencies: Diablo has fewer descendants than the other Primordials due to his preference for operating alone. He dislikes creating new daemons, which makes his lineage smaller but more powerful.
