Escanor (エスカノール)

Escanor is the Lion’s Sin of Pride (傲慢の罪ライオン・シン, Raion Shin) of the Seven Deadly Sins and is regarded as the “Strongest Holy Knight” in the Kingdom of Liones. Escanor’s power is unmatched during the day, thanks to his unique ability, Sunshine, which grants him immense strength that peaks at high noon, but diminishes after sunset, leaving him fragile and weak during the night. He was also the former second prince of the Kingdom of Castellio before he became a fugitive and ultimately joined the Seven Deadly Sins.

Appearance

Escanor has two distinct forms: his daytime form, where he appears as a towering, muscular man radiating confidence, and his nighttime form, where he reverts to a thin, timid, and meek man.

  • Daytime Form: Escanor in his full strength is a massive, muscular man with an imposing presence. His well-defined body is a direct result of the power ofSunshine, and he often carries hisSacred Treasure, the Divine Axe Rhitta, on his back. Escanor’s appearance exudes pride and power, with a sharp gaze and a trademark mustache, symbolizing his confidence and overwhelming strength. He dons simple clothing, often seen in an open vest or shirt that highlights his physique.

  • Nighttime Form: After sunset, Escanor shrinks down into a frail and skinny man. His demeanor changes drastically, becoming shy, anxious, and submissive. In this form, he lacks the physical strength he possesses during the day, and his voice and mannerisms reflect his deeply insecure nature.

Escanor, the Lion’s Sin of Pride from The Seven Deadly Sins, utilizes his powerful technique known as Grand Cross. This devastating move channels the full extent of his solar strength, showcasing his status as one of the strongest characters in the series and embodying the overwhelming might of the sun.

Personality

Escanor’s personality is a stark contrast between day and night:

  • Daytime Personality: Escanor is the embodiment of pride. He becomes incredibly arrogant and confident, considering himself vastly superior to others. At his peak strength during high noon, he becomes unstoppable and often looks down on his enemies. His prideful nature causes him to speak in a condescending tone, but his confidence is well-founded, as he is virtually invincible under the sun. Despite his overwhelming pride, Escanor has a strong sense of duty and remains loyal to his comrades in the Seven Deadly Sins.

  • Nighttime Personality: In contrast, Escanor at night is the complete opposite. He is extremely timid, meek, and self-effacing. He lacks the confidence and assertiveness he shows during the day and is often apologetic and anxious in his interactions with others. He is humble and self-conscious, feeling unworthy of the strength he wields during the day.

Powers and Abilities

Escanor, known as the Lion’s Sin of Pride in The Seven Deadly Sins, is depicted in the manga as a character of immense strength and charisma.

Sunshine

Escanor’s signature ability is Sunshine, which grants him increasing strength as the sun rises. His power gradually builds throughout the day, reaching its peak at high noon, when Escanor becomes an unstoppable force. At noon, Escanor’s body becomes almost god-like, with his strength, speed, and endurance reaching unparalleled levels. However, once the sun sets, his power fades completely, leaving him in a weakened, frail state.

The One

At exactly 12:00 PM, Escanor reaches his most powerful form, known as The One. In this form, Escanor becomes an invincible being for one minute. His physical power and abilities are unmatched, and he can obliterate even the strongest foes effortlessly. At this peak, Escanor is said to embody the power of the sun itself.

Divine Axe Rhitta

Escanor wields the Divine Axe Rhitta, his Sacred Treasure, a massive, one-handed axe that he uses with incredible skill and power during the day. The axe is so heavy that only Escanor in his daytime form can wield it effectively. The axe can also store the heat energy generated by Sunshine, allowing Escanor to unleash devastating attacks.

Legacy

Escanor’s journey in The Seven Deadly Sins is one of inner conflict, as he learns to balance his immense strength with humility. His unwavering pride during the day and his vulnerability at night make him a unique and beloved character. Escanor’s ultimate fate is one of sacrifice, as he gives up his life to protect his friends and the world he cherishes. Despite his immense pride, Escanor’s actions demonstrate his selflessness and loyalty, making him one of the most memorable characters in the series.

Relationships

Merlin

Escanor is deeply in love with Merlin, the Sin of Gluttony, and is often shy around her in his nighttime form. His feelings for her are pure and selfless, and he respects her immensely. Merlin, while not reciprocating his romantic feelings, respects Escanor and values his strength and loyalty. Their bond grows throughout the series, with Escanor willing to sacrifice everything for her.

Meliodas

As the leader of the Seven Deadly Sins, Meliodas recruited Escanor into the group, recognizing his immense potential. Despite Meliodas being incredibly powerful himself, Escanor’s pride often leads him to consider himself superior. However, there is mutual respect between the two, and Meliodas trusts Escanor’s strength in battle.

Ban

Escanor and Ban share a unique relationship, with Ban often teasing Escanor for his nighttime timidness. Despite Ban’s mischievous nature, the two share a bond of camaraderie as members of the Seven Deadly Sins.
