Rize Kamishiro

Rize Kamishiro(神代 利世, Kamishiro Rize) was a powerful and notorious ghoul, also known as theBinge Eater(大喰い, Ōkui), due to her insatiable appetite. Born into the prestigious Washuu Clan, Rize was the illegitimate daughter of Tsuneyoshi Washuu, the former CCG chairman. At a young age, she managed to escape from her clan and the mysterious organizationV.

Her hunger and reckless feeding habits made her a dangerous presence, feared by both ghouls and humans in Tokyo. Rize’s life took a dramatic turn in the Steel Beam Incident, which was orchestrated to kill her. Although she was presumed dead, her kakuhou was harvested in a surgical procedure that transformed Ken Kaneki into the first artificial one-eyed ghoul.

After her apparent death, Rize was captured by Dr. Akihiro Kanou and became a crucial piece in his experiments, with her kakuhou being used to create more one-eyed ghouls, such as Kurona, Nashiro Yasuhisa, and Souta Washuu-Furuta.

Rize’s existence took a darker turn when she was used as the host forDragon(竜, Ryū), a monstrous being that ravaged Tokyo and caused mass ghoulification. She was eventually freed from her suffering when Ken Kaneki ended her life, bringing her long ordeal to a close.

Appearance

Rize Kamishiro had a striking appearance that matched her manipulative nature. She was slender and of average height, with an hourglass figure that added to her allure. Rize had chest-length purple hair with bangs swept to the left, framing her face, and she possessed vivid purple eyes, thin eyebrows, and full lips, which gave her a captivating presence.

As a ghoul blending into human society, she often wore stylish outfits typical of a young woman, favoring dresses that highlighted her figure. Notably, she wore red-framed glasses, though she had no vision problems, which likely served as a part of her disguise. Her attire, often revealing some cleavage, was part of her method to seduce and lure men, using her beauty to her advantage.

After her transformation into the monstrous entity Dragon, Rize’s appearance changed drastically. Her hair turned long and white, with intricate markings across her pale face, especially around her eyes and forehead, reflecting the loss of her former humanity.

In her younger years, before becoming the “Binge Eater,” she sported shorter hair, giving her a more innocent look compared to the deadly ghoul she would later become.

Rize Kamishiro, a central character in Tokyo Ghoul, transforms into a powerful ghoul, displaying her terrifying strength and predatory instincts.

Personality

Rize Kamishiro was a highly manipulative and voracious ghoul who embodied the archetype of a femme fatale. She was cunning, using her beauty and charm to lure in unsuspecting victims, most of whom did not survive their encounters with her. Despite being surrounded by many acquaintances, she left behind a mysterious and enigmatic impression, rarely revealing much about herself. Her cold, selfish nature was apparent in her insatiable hunger, as her binge-eating habits created hardships for other ghouls, though she cared little for the consequences.

Rize’s lifestyle reflected her lack of ambition; she drifted between wards, feeding indiscriminately and indulging in her desires, mainly out of boredom. She was fiercely independent, and many who encountered her, like Kazuichi Banjou, were drawn to her strength and self-sufficiency, even though she cared little for others’ affections.

However, after being rescued by Renji Yomo from her captivity and experimentation, Rize’s character shifted drastically. The prolonged starvation and torment had left her broken and vulnerable. She was reduced to a near-mindless state, unable to recognize her surroundings, requiring restraints to keep her calm. In this state of helplessness, her tough exterior crumbled, revealing a deeply fearful and fragile side, as she cried out for her foster father, Matasaka Kamishiro, in distress. This side of Rize contrasted sharply with the once dominant and self-assured ghoul she had been.

Rize Kamishiro, in a moment of chilling satisfaction, showcases the aftermath of her ghoul instincts. Her unsettling demeanor reflects the dark nature of her hunger, revealing the stark reality of her existence as a predator in Tokyo Ghoul.

Ghoul Physiology

As a ghoul, Rize had exceptional physical prowess, including enhanced strength, speed, and durability. She possessed a rinkaku kagune, which made her especially powerful even among other ghouls. Her kagune was notable for its regenerative capabilities, allowing her to recover quickly from non-fatal wounds. However, despite her superior healing abilities, Rize was still vulnerable to severe damage, as shown when the steel beam crushed her waist during the “accident” that led to her being used in Ken Kaneki’s transformation.

Rinkaku Kagune

Rize’s rinkaku kagune was one of the most formidable aspects of her abilities. She could produce up to six bright red tentacle-like appendages from her lower back, which were slim but extremely sharp. These claws could slice through both humans and ghouls with ease, making Rize a deadly combatant. The kagune’s regenerative properties were especially advanced, allowing her to recover from injuries that would be lethal to others. However, significant damage to her vital organs could still prove fatal, as demonstrated by the steel beam incident.

Dragon Form

After becoming the core of Dragon, Rize underwent a drastic transformation. Her once-human appearance changed into something monstrous. She had long white hair, a pale face marked with decorative patterns, and her body became attached to the massive entity known as Dragon. In this form, she wielded numerous gigantic tentacles, each resembling a hydra’s head, with sharp teeth and hair-like extensions resembling her original form. The Dragon form was capable of releasing a ghoulification toxin that spread across Tokyo, transforming countless humans into ghouls. This immense power made her one of the most destructive entities in the series.

Relationships

Ken Kaneki

Rize was initially drawn to Ken Kaneki because of his appealing scent and appearance, which made her view him as a potential meal. Despite their shared interests, such as a love for books and intellectual conversations, Rize’s ultimate goal was to lure Kaneki in and devour him. After their date, she attempted to kill him, but her plan was thwarted when a steel beam collapsed on her. This incident led to Kaneki being severely injured and undergoing surgery, where Dr. Akihiro Kanou transplanted Rize’s kakuhou into him, inadvertently turning him into a one-eyed ghoul.

Matasaka Kamishiro (Shachi)

Rize’s relationship with her foster father, Matasaka Kamishiro (also known as Shachi), was once warm, as she admired him during her childhood. However, as she grew older and her infamous binge-eating habit worsened, their relationship became strained. Shachi disapproved of her reckless behavior and her impact on other ghouls, leading to frequent arguments. Despite this, in her vulnerable and starved state, Rize apologized to him, showing that she still harbored some attachment to her foster father. Shachi, on the other hand, continued to care for Rize, viewing her as his daughter despite her actions.

Kichimura Washuu (Souta Furuta)

Rize and Furuta (Kichimura Washuu) were acquainted since childhood. Furuta helped Rize escape from the Washuu Clan, believing he was rescuing her from a life of control. However, Rize did not seem to appreciate his efforts and instead enjoyed her newfound freedom by living a hedonistic lifestyle, which included interacting with other men. Feeling betrayed and angry at her rejection of his help, Furuta orchestrated the steel beam incident that crushed Rize, essentially using her body to further his plans. Their current dynamic remains unclear, as Rize’s later fate was tied to her being the core of Dragon, manipulated by Furuta.

Dr. Akihiro Kanou

Dr. Kanou was obsessed with Rize, specifically her unique kagune, which had extraordinary regenerative abilities. His interest in her led to his pursuit of using her as a key component in his experiments to create artificial one-eyed ghouls. Kanou imprisoned Rize and farmed her kakuhou, treating her inhumanely, which contributed to her suffering. He saw her primarily as a tool for his experiments and showed no concern for her wellbeing. The extent of their relationship beyond these circumstances is largely unknown.

Kazuichi Banjou

Banjou harbored one-sided romantic feelings for Rize, despite her complete lack of interest in him. He admired her strength and independence, but Rize saw him as insignificant and did not reciprocate his affections. After the news of her supposed death, Banjou went to the 20th ward in search of her, unaware of the true extent of her fate. His devotion to Rize was clear, but it was ultimately unrequited.
