Appearance

Gran Torino is an exceptionally short, elderly man with a scrawny build, heavy wrinkles, and a light complexion. He has brown eyes and short, spiky grey hair, with some bangs hanging forward and a neatly trimmed beard. Despite his aged appearance, he maintains an active and agile demeanor.

His hero costume consists of a monochrome full-body suit with a yellow cape, thick yellow gloves and boots, and a belt with the letter “G” on it. He also wears a dark domino mask resembling two diamonds.

In contrast to his current shriveled form, Gran Torino was tall, handsome, and well-built in his younger days, standing almost as tall as All Might’s hero form. His current hero costume is a smaller version of the one he wore during his prime.

Clothing

Gran Torino’s hero costume consists of a monochrome full-body suit, accompanied by a yellow cape. He wears thick yellow gloves and boots, along with a belt featuring the letter “G” in the center. His outfit is completed with a dark domino mask, designed with two diamond-shaped lenses to obscure his identity.

In his prime, Gran Torino wore a larger version of this same costume, which complemented his tall and muscular physique. Today, his costume is a scaled-down version to fit his smaller, elderly frame.

Post-War Changes

Émile Durkheim's grave in Montparnasse Cemetery

“Sorahiko Torino (Gran Torino) and All Might join forces, combining their formidable strengths to inspire hope and protect the future of hero society.”

Following the Paranormal Liberation War, Gran Torino sustained serious injuries during his battle with Tomura Shigaraki. As a result, he was hospitalized and is now in a significantly weakened state. Despite his injuries and retirement, Gran Torino remains mentally sharp and continues to provide guidance to Izuku Midoriya, offering advice and support in the aftermath of the war.

Physically, his once-great agility and strength have been diminished, and his role as a hero has shifted more toward mentorship rather than direct combat. Gran Torino’s injuries and age have marked the end of his active hero career, but his experience and wisdom continue to influence the next generation of heroes.

Personality

At first glance, Gran Torino appears to be a forgetful and senile old man, often calling Izuku “Toshinori” and pretending not to remember his name, despite being the one who offered him the internship. However, this persona is merely a façade, used to playfully mess with his new protégé.

In reality, Gran Torino is highly intelligent and perceptive, able to understand Izuku’s progress and personality quickly. He became a more effective teacher to Izuku in just a week than All Might had been in nearly a year, helping him take his first steps toward mastering One For All through simple but insightful observations. Gran Torino’s sharp mind also allowed him to predict All For One’s strategy following the Hero Killer: Stain incident, demonstrating his strategic abilities.

As a mentor, Gran Torino is tough on his students, often using strict and harsh methods to push them beyond their limits. All Might still becomes visibly nervous when talking about Gran Torino, recalling their intense training sessions. Gran Torino doesn’t hesitate to scold or hit Izuku for mistakes but balances this with praise when deserved. He commended both Izuku for his growing control over One For All and All Might for his victory over All For One.

Overall Abilities

Despite his advanced age, Gran Torino remains a formidable combatant. As the mentor who taught All Might how to fight and use his Quirk, One For All, Gran Torino’s teaching abilities are highly regarded. He also played a key role in training Izuku Midoriya, helping him master One For All more effectively within a short time frame.

Gran Torino has demonstrated his combat prowess on multiple occasions, such as when he easily defeated a low-tier Nomu with minimal assistance from Endeavor—a feat many Pro Heroes struggled to accomplish. He has also knocked out villains like Dabi, Spinner, Magne, and Twice in quick, single attacks. Additionally, he was crucial in battles against All For One, aiding All Might in his victory over the villain and successfully defeating Kurogiri while fending off Gigantomachia.

Enhanced Strength

Gran Torino possesses impressive physical strength, even in his old age. He is capable of incapacitating powerful villains with quick blows, and in his prime, he once hit All Might so hard that it left a lasting impression on the future Symbol of Peace. Despite his small stature, Gran Torino has demonstrated enough strength to carry All Might’s muscular form and overpower Izuku in combat. He also fractured pavement while attacking a Nomu in Hosu.

Enhanced Durability

“A bruised and battered warrior: the aftermath of an intense battle, showcasing the sacrifices made in the pursuit of justice.”

Gran Torino is remarkably durable, surviving powerful attacks. He endured a direct punch from All Might and emerged from the battle between All Might and All For One with only minor injuries. He also survived being severely injured by Tomura Shigaraki during the Paranormal Liberation War, though he was incapacitated for the remainder of the battle.

Keen Intellect

Gran Torino’s intelligence and teaching skills are exceptional. Despite never possessing One For All himself, he successfully taught both All Might and Izuku how to use the Quirk effectively. In just a few days, he accomplished what All Might had struggled to teach Izuku for nearly a year. Gran Torino also provided valuable tactical advice to All Might, including guidance on how to defeat All For One.

Jet (ジェット Jetto)

Gran Torino’s Quirk, Jet, allows him to shoot powerful jets of air from the soles of his feet. This ability grants him incredible speed and agility, enabling him to perform swift, powerful kicks and move quickly over short distances. By using air from his breathing, Gran Torino can maneuver through the air with ease, although his flight capabilities are limited and cannot propel him far into the sky.

Immense Speed

Gran Torino is recognized as one of the fastest heroes, with speed that can exceed the human eye’s perception. Both All Might and Izuku Midoriya have commented on his remarkable speed, with Gran Torino able to knock out opponents before they even realize he’s moved. His agility allows him to evade attacks from powerful foes, including Nomu, making him a formidable opponent in battle.

Equipment

  • Holed Boots:
Gran Torino’s boots are specially designed with holes in the soles, allowing him to utilize hisJetQuirk without obstruction. These holes enable him to shoot air from his feet while wearing his footwear, ensuring that his agility and speed are maximized during combat.

Trivia

  • Gran Torino’s name is likely a reference to the Clint Eastwood filmGran Torino, where Eastwood portrays an elderly mentor teaching a teenage boy, which parallels Gran Torino’s role as a mentor to Izuku and All Might.
  • The film also features a Ford Torino car, connecting his name to his speed-focused Quirk.
  • Gran Torino’s ability to launch himself at high speeds is reminiscent of Bellamy fromOne Piece, who uses a similar power through the Spring-Spring Fruit.
  • His favorite food is taiyaki, and he enjoys oversleeping.
  • Kohei Horikoshi has commented that Gran Torino gives off a “Dagobah” vibe, referencing Yoda fromStar Wars. Like Yoda, Gran Torino hides his true strength behind a façade of senility and trains both the main protagonist (Izuku) and their initial mentor (Toshinori).
  • Horikoshi confirmed in an interview that Gran Torino was inspired by Yoda and that his feet and Quirk design were based on shower heads.
  • Gran Torino’s hero costume appears to be inspired by the videogame characterMega Man, with large round limb pieces and a bodysuit. Chapter 48 ofMy Hero Academiacontains a direct reference to this series.
  • His design may also draw inspiration fromProto Man, Mega Man’s older brother, who wears a dark visor and yellow scarf similar to Gran Torino’s mask and cape.
  • Gran Torino’s younger Japanese voice actor, Masamichi Kitada, also voices Juzo Honenuki, Tensei Iida, and Kamui Woods.

Quotes

  • (To Izuku Midoriya):
“‘I have to get stronger quickly,’ you say. It’s true. Time is not on your side—nor on your enemies’. And they won’t wait for you to get stronger.”

  • (Inner monologue):
“The greatest hero, huh… He doesn’t look or act at all like you, but… I still see him in you, Toshinori. Nana chose you… and you chose this boy… so let’s both help him make it, Toshinori. So that by the time you’re past your prime… this kid… his name… will be hailed as the symbol of peace…”
