Appearance
Jinbeis a large, blue whale shark fish-man and the tallest member of theStraw Hat Pirates. He has a stocky, sumo wrestler-like build, with facial features resembling those of Japanese demons, such as theoni. His distinctive yellow eyebrows and sideburns are shaped like those of oni, and he has a bulbous nose and an angular lower lip that points upward. Jinbe also bears a prominent, lightning-shaped scar that runs from his left sideburn over his left eye, which he acquired betweenOtohime’sassassination and his encounter withAce. His tusk-like conical lower fangs add to his fearsome appearance, while the rest of his teeth, though smaller, share a similar shape. He has a severe underbite, making space for his large fangs.
Jinbe’s hair is long and two-toned, with black as the primary color and golden (in the manga) or white (in the anime) streaks running from his forehead to the back of his head. He keeps his hair in a topknot, and a tuft of slightly green-hued hair on his chin. Before joining theSun Pirates, Jinbe’s hair was shorter, and he kept his chin clean-shaven. Over time, his chin hair grew, and his hairstyle became more traditional. Like most fish-men, Jinbe has webbed hands and feet, and his limbs appear thin compared to his massive torso. His gills, pale and pinkish in color, are located between his shoulders and neck.
Jinbe is frequently seen wearing traditional Japanese attire, often kimono or gi, that changes with each arc. Under his pale red coat, Jinbe wears a coral-colored kimono patterned with alternating black and white square designs, tied together with a purpleobiaround his waist. After the two-year timeskip, he switches to a black coat but retains similar traditional garments beneath it.
Over the years, Jinbe’s wardrobe has varied, reflecting his different roles and stages of life. As a member of theSun Pirates, he wore kimonos withkarakusa(scroll) and floral designs. During his debut in theSummit War of Marineford, he wore a kimono with square designs, and later switched to a plain kimono post-war. Four years before, during his battle with Ace, Jinbe wore a black gi with fish designs on the chest and a red sash with a tanto tied to it. Two years after the war, he awaitedLuffyat theSea Forestin a kimono with leaf patterns. InCaribou’scover story, Jinbe donned a kimono with floral patterns, continuing his preference for traditional Japanese clothing.
Jinbe’sSun Piratestattoo is located prominently on the center of his chest, symbolizing his history with the crew. During theWhole Cake Island Arc, he wore a yellow kimono featuring aJolly Rogerdesign arranged in stripes, along with an orange coat. In theWano Country Arc, Jinbe sported a yellow kimono with large orange and white diamond patterns, a red sash, and a coat with a wave design, which was dark purple at the top and progressively lighter toward the sleeves and bottom. Like other Straw Hats participating in theRaid on Onigashima, Jinbe briefly wore aBeasts Piratesdisguise, courtesy ofKin’emon‘s ability.
After leaving Wano, Jinbe’s attire shifted again, this time to a black kimono with white skull patterns and a purple belt. He also wore a pink and green robe adorned with floral patterns.
In theEgghead Arc, Jinbe embraces a more casual look, wearing a hooded pink Hawaiian shirt with orange and yellow floral patterns, a pair of shorts, an earpiece, and orangeDOM Shoes.
In the past, while serving in theNeptune Army, Jinbe wore the army uniform and was often seen smoking a pipe. DuringOtohime’sfuneral, Jinbe appeared in a formal suit, reflecting the solemnity of the occasion.
InSBS Volume 63,Eiichiro Odadrew theSeven Warlords of the Seaas children. Young Jinbe is depicted with light-colored hair, wearing a tatteredgi, and practicingFish-Man Karate. Even as a child, he had already earned a black belt, showcasing his early proficiency in martial arts.

Jinbe enjoying a moment of leisure. The former Warlord of the Sea and helmsman of the Straw Hat Pirates, Jinbe is known for his calm demeanor and formidable strength in battle.
Pride and Honor
Jinbe is known for his strong sense of pride and honor. Referred to as the “pirate-hating pirate” by theWorld Government, his disdain for piracy stems from the actions of pirates who abduct fish-men and merfolk to sell as slaves. However, Jinbe holds great respect forWhitebearddue to the protection Whitebeard provided toFish-Man Island, recognizing the dire consequences his home would face if Whitebeard were to lose a war against theWorld Government. Despite initially hating pirates, Jinbe willingly became one to aid his fellow fish-men and joined theSun PiratesunderFisher Tiger.
Jinbe values honor in his actions, as demonstrated when he declinedLuffy’sinvitation to join theStraw Hat Piratesuntil he had severed ties withBig Mom. He prioritized obtaining the consent of his crew, theSun Pirates, before making any decisions. Despite his honorable intentions, Jinbe realized Big Mom’sRoulettewas rigged to kill him and his crew, leading him to silently revolt against her rather than settle things diplomatically. When he later confronted Big Mom, Jinbe openly declared his departure from her crew in front of her allies, ensuring his defection was official.
Principles over Honor
While Jinbe is deeply honorable, he is willing to put his principles and the greater good above his personal pride. This can be seen when he convincedLuffyto prioritize rescuingAceover seeking revenge againstBlackbeard. Jinbe is also humble, especially in contrast to otherSeven Warlords of the Sea, as he willingly gave up his status to avoid fighting against Whitebeard. He is empathetic towards others, particularly humans, which sets him apart from his former comradeArlong, who despised humans. Jinbe treats humans as equals and values the importance of coexistence, often tearing up when seeing the pain of others, such as whenLuffymourned the loss of Ace.
Humor
Though Jinbe is usually calm and composed, he has a humorous side. He was shocked when he sawShirahoshioutside her room and further surprised to see an injuredHatchan. Jinbe also displayed humor when commenting onLuffy’s inattentiveness during his storytelling or when laughing atJudgefor unintentionally complimentingSanji.
Intelligence and Strategic Mind
Jinbe is a strategic thinker, shaped by his years as a pirate and soldier. His perception of danger and ability to deduce situations were displayed during theImpel Downescape, when he accurately predictedMagellan’sblockade, and when he recognizedBig Mom’sRoulette as a trap. Though he once doubtedOtohime’sideals of peace, Jinbe grew to support them afterFisher Tiger’sspeech about unity. His wisdom has enabled him to guideLuffythrough grief and navigate the complex political landscape ofFish-Man Island.
Kindness and Selflessness
Jinbe has lived his life helping his fellow fish-men and merfolk, earning immense respect from theSun Piratesand the fish-man community. Even when invited to join the Straw Hats, Jinbe sought permission from his crew first, prioritizing their feelings over his own. He refused to spin Big Mom’s Roulette not just for his safety, but because it would endanger his crewmates. Despite having the opportunity to escapeTotto Land, Jinbe stayed behind to ensure his former crew could leave safely, demonstrating his unwillingness to abandon his comrades.
Willpower
Jinbe has shown remarkable willpower, courage, and determination in moments of intense pressure. His resolve was evident when he resistedBig Mom’sSoul Pocus, declaring that he had no reason to fear her as he intended to serve underLuffy, the future Pirate King. He has also demonstrated the ability to accept difficult sacrifices, such asPedro’sandAtlas’sdeaths, remaining focused on ensuring the survival of his crew.
Jinbe’s personality, shaped by his life experiences as an orphan, soldier, and pirate, has made him a wise, selfless, and highly respected figure among the Straw Hats and the wider pirate world. His ultimate dream is to achieve harmony between humans and fish-men, a goal that drives many of his actions.
