Vinsmoke Sanjialso known as “Black Leg” Sanji, was born as Vinsmoke Sanji and serves as the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates. He is one of the Senior Officers of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet and a core member of the crew, being the fifth to join and the fourth to do so during the events of the Baratie Arc.
Sanji was born as the third son and fourth child of the Vinsmoke Family, the royal family of the Germa Kingdom, making him a former prince. However, Sanji disowned his lineage not once, but twice—first as a child, when he fled from his family, and again as an adult after being forced to reunite with them. His rejection of the Vinsmokes stems from their harsh treatment and the values they imposed on him, which ran counter to Sanji’s compassionate nature. After his escape, he was taken in by Zeff, the head chef of the floating restaurant Baratie, where he served as sous chef before meeting Monkey D. Luffy, who eventually persuaded him to join the Straw Hat Pirates.
Sanji’s dream is to find the legendary All Blue, a paradise for chefs said to be where the East Blue, West Blue, North Blue, and South Blue meet, bringing together ingredients and wildlife from all four seas. This dream fuels his passion as a chef and adventurer, and he continues to pursue it with unwavering dedication. As one of the Monster Trio, alongside Luffy and Zoro, Sanji is recognized as one of the three strongest fighters in the Straw Hat crew, making him a crucial asset in both combat and culinary expertise.
Sanji’s journey has earned him considerable infamy, with his first bounty of Beli77,000,000 being issued for his involvement in the raid on Enies Lobby. His bounty later increased to Beli177,000,000 after the events of the Dressrosa Arc. During this time, the condition of his bounty was altered to “Only Alive” due to interference from his biological father, Judge Vinsmoke, who sought to reclaim his son for the Vinsmoke Family’s interests. However, after escaping from Big Mom’s territory during the Whole Cake Island Arc, Sanji’s bounty condition was restored to “Dead or Alive”—although his surname, Vinsmoke, remained on the wanted poster despite his continued rejection of his lineage. His bounty further increased to Beli330,000,000 following these events.
After the Raid on Onigashima, Sanji’s reputation and strength grew even further, and his bounty skyrocketed to Beli1,032,000,000, cementing his place as one of the most powerful and influential members of the Straw Hat Pirates and a key figure in the ever-evolving power dynamics of the New World.

Appearance
Sanji is a tall, slim, yet muscular man, known for his notably long legs. His jaw-length blond hair is one of his defining features, which he keeps brushed over one side of his face. Before the timeskip, he wore his hair covering the left side, but after the two-year timeskip, he switched to covering the right. His hairstyle also became less straight and slightly scruffier after the timeskip, giving him a more rugged look.
One of Sanji’s most distinctive traits is the spirals in his eyebrows. His right eyebrow forms a spiral at the outer end, while the left eyebrow spirals inward. This unique feature sets him apart from his Vinsmoke siblings, whose eyebrows curl counterclockwise to the left. Sanji’s eyebrows curl clockwise to the right, further emphasizing his individuality within his family. However, during his battle with Queen, Sanji’s dormant genetic modifications activated, causing his eyebrows to switch directions and match those of his siblings. After a brief unconscious period, his eyebrows reverted to their original shape, though they have been shown to shift direction during particularly intense battles, such as when fighting S-Shark and deflecting Kizaru’s laser with a kick.
While Sanji’s eyes are usually depicted as black, they were shown as grey-blue in the anime during the Thriller Bark Arc. Interestingly, when Trafalgar Law switched Sanji’s consciousness into Nami’s body during the Punk Hazard Arc, her brown eyes temporarily appeared as grey-blue.
Sanji’s typical attire is a sleek black, double-breasted suit with gold buttons and a tie, paired with a long-sleeved, buttoned shirt that varies in color—usually orange, blue, turquoise, or black, sometimes featuring pinstripes. Sanji’s outfit tends to change more frequently than most of the crew, reflecting his attention to style and appearance.
As a child, Sanji wore a yellow shirt with the number “3” printed on it, along with white pants, brown boots, and a light-yellow bandana tied around his neck. His hair was styled in the opposite manner from how it is in the present, hinting at his eventual evolution in both appearance and character as he grew into adulthood.

Sanji readies himself for battle, embodying his fierce determination and skill as a fighter. His focus and agility highlight his commitment to protecting his crew, showcasing the intensity that defines the Straw Hat Pirates’ cook.
Throughout the series, Sanji exhibits a sharp, distinct sense of style, often adapting his attire to match the arc’s environment while retaining his trademark elegance. Here’s a breakdown of his outfits before the timeskip:
-
Baratie Arc:Sanji’s formal side was on full display, as he sported a blue shirt with black pinstripes, staying true to his refined appearance as the sous chef of Baratie.
-
Drum Island Arc:In the snowy climates of Drum Island, Sanji layered up with a brown coat outlined in fur, suited for the harsh, wintry conditions of the arc.
-

-
Sabaody Archipelago Arc:Sanji switched things up with a green shirt paired with a white tie featuring purple horizontal stripes, continuing his trend of stylish, formal attire.
During the Straw Hats’ separation, Sanji was coerced into wearing a typical okama (cross-dresser) outfit while on Momoiro Island. This included a pink dress with puffy sleeves, a long curly blond wig, nail polish, women’s undergarments, heavy makeup, and high heels. Despite his protestations, he embraced the look temporarily before reverting to his usual style later on.
One of Sanji’s most consistent accessories is his black dress shoes, which are integral to his Black Leg Style fighting technique. These shoes are highly durable, enhancing the power of his kicks, though he has proven he can fight without them, as shown during his battle with Kuroobi.
Additionally, Sanji is almost never seen without a cigarette, as he is a chain-smoker. His smoking habit is another aspect of his persona, often accompanying his calm and collected demeanor, especially in high-pressure situations.

Following the two-year timeskip, Sanji’s appearance underwent several changes. He now covers his right eye while leaving his left visible, and his hair has grown slightly longer.
