Nezuko Kamado

Nezuko Kamado (竈門 禰豆子, Kamado Nezuko)is the deuteragonist of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. She is a demon and the younger sister of Tanjiro Kamado, as well as one of the last surviving members of the Kamado family. Once human, Nezuko was attacked and transformed into a demon by Muzan Kibutsuji.

Appearance

Nezuko Kamado is a young girl with fair skin, a slender build, and prominent fangs. She has sharp, stiletto-shaped nails that are light pink with an ombre effect fading to a reddish-pink at the tips. Her long, wavy black hair extends below her waist, transitioning to a flame-orange color past her elbows, and is styled into large, straight ridges, sweeping drastically to her left. Her eyes are pale pink with lighter rims around the irises and a Persian pink hue below the pupils. They have a soft appearance but slant downward, framed by long eyelashes. When transforming, her pupils become black slits.

Nezuko’s attire includes a light pink kimono with an asanoha (hemp leaf) pattern, layered over a white yuban. It is secured by a red and white-checkered hanhaba obi, an orange-threaded obijime, and a green obiage. She wears a long, dark brown haori that reaches her calves, zōri sandals with pink straps, and white tabi socks wrapped in black material resembling kyahan. She also has a small pink ribbon on the left side of her head and a bamboo muzzle given to her by Giyu Tomioka, which is tied around her jaw with a strip of red cloth.

In her awakened form, Nezuko’s appearance changes significantly. She becomes taller and more curvaceous, with hair extending to her feet. The bamboo muzzle and footwear are absent, and her kimono sleeves are removed. She grows a short white horn on the right side of her forehead, marked with an irregular crack pattern, and develops vein-like patterns on her forehead and around her left eye. Additionally, a red and green vine-like pattern covers her arms, legs, and chest, accompanied by crack-like marks around her irises.

As a human, Nezuko had a similar appearance but lacked her demon traits. Her hair was fully black, styled into three low buns with pink ribbons, and her eyes were a darker pink. She wore the same kimono, minus the haori, and layered with a white yuban, along with a white onbuhimo cloth to carry her younger brother, Rokuta. After returning to human form, she regained her original features, except for the flame-orange tips in her hair, a characteristic later inherited by her descendant, Toko.

Nezuko’s original appearance as a human.

Before her transformation into a demon, Nezuko was a kind and caring girl who put the needs of others before her own, much like her older brother, Tanjiro. As a responsible elder sister, she often looked after her younger siblings, prioritizing their well-being. Even after regaining her human state, Nezuko displays a willingness to protect her friends from harm, highlighting her selfless and caring nature.

Initially, Nezuko exhibited the typical traits of a demon, displaying a bloodthirsty hunger for human flesh. However, after witnessing Tanjiro’s efforts to protect her from being killed by a Demon Slayer, her demeanor changed drastically, and she became fiercely protective of him. While Nezuko has lost many of her human memories, particularly those not related to her family, she retains a childlike disposition. Influenced by Sakonji Urokodaki during her two-year slumber, she views humans with a familial sense of care and protection. Nezuko also retains some human emotions, such as crying when sad or smiling when happy, but generally, she appears more detached than others around her. She often sees reflections of her siblings in other humans, such as recognizing Rokuta Kamado in Yushiro.

As a demon, Nezuko is brave and unafraid to fight, displaying a strong willpower by refusing to consume human flesh or blood, even in cases of extreme injury or exposure. This resolve is evident when she resists Sanemi Shinazugawa’s attempt to provoke her using his Marechi blood. Her willpower persists even after regaining her human form, as shown when she leaped in front of Inosuke to protect him from her brother, who had transformed into a demon.

Nezuko rarely speaks, often stuttering when she attempts to do so. This may be due to her bamboo muzzle, which she seldom removes, and the years of silence following her transformation. However, after developing resistance to sunlight, she began to interact more frequently with others, leading to noticeable improvement in her speech. She can fully pronounce words if she hears them spoken by others or if they are repeated frequently.

Tamayo later revealed that Nezuko’s missing memories and underdeveloped personality were due to her prioritizing the development of her resistance to sunlight over regaining full consciousness.

    Overall Abilities

Despite not being part of the Twelve Kizuki, Nezuko is an exceptionally powerful demon. Her most notable trait is her extraordinary growth rate, which stems from the large amount of blood she received from Muzan Kibutsuji during her transformation into a demon. This rapid growth is evident in her battles, where she often manages to defeat opponents despite initially being outmatched. Nezuko adapts to challenging situations by enhancing her physical abilities, improving her regeneration, or developing her own Blood Demon Art.

Nezuko has demonstrated significant combat proficiency, overpowering various demons such as the Temple Demon, Swamp Demon, and Susamaru. Her strength continued to grow, allowing her to confront Upper Rank demons like Daki, whom she eventually overpowered despite initially struggling, and Hantengu’s clones, against whom she could hold her own in battle.

Nezuko is the first demon to join the Demon Slayer Corps, and her name means “red bean,” while her surname Kamado refers to a “wood-fueled stove,” alluding to her family’s occupation. Her Japanese voice actress, Akari Kitō, shares the kanji for “Demon” (鬼) in her name, and they are both 5’0″ tall; in the English dub, she is voiced by Abby Trott, who also voices Zenitsu’s sparrow, Ukogi. In popularity polls, she ranked 3rd with 3,319 votes in the first and 11th with 5,000 votes in the second. Nezuko’s hair remains unbound as Tanjiro struggles to style it, though she enjoys having it braided like Mitsuri Kanroji’s. Skilled at rock-paper-scissors, she often beats Tanjiro. Her favorite food is konpeitō, traditional Japanese sugar candies. In the Kimetsu Academy spin-off, she bites baguettes, referencing her bamboo muzzle.

    • Abnormal Demon Physiology:

Nezuko possesses several unique abilities that distinguish her from other demons. Most notably, she can restore her strength without consuming human blood, which is typically essential for demons. Instead, Nezuko recovers through sleep, though she requires extended periods of rest to fully regain her power.

Another key trait is her extraordinary growth rate, enabling her to become stronger without training or consuming humans. This ability often activates in the heat of battle, resulting in significant power boosts. Her rapid growth was first observed during her fight with Susamaru. Initially, Nezuko’s foot was blown off by the Temari Demon’s attack, but after regenerating, she was able to withstand the force of the strikes and ultimately engage the demon in a skirmish, emerging victorious.

    • Advanced Demon Form:

Nezuko can enter a berserk state, transforming into a more demonic, adult version of herself. In this form, she develops vine-like tattoos across her body and a single horn protruding from the right side of her forehead. Her physical abilities are significantly enhanced, allowing her to sever Daki’s limbs with a stomp and kick her across great distances, causing extensive destruction to multiple buildings. Her regenerative abilities in this state are comparable to those of the Upper Ranks of the Twelve Kizuki.

When Nezuko first accessed this form during her battle with Daki, she became frenzied and lost her usual restraint toward human blood, only calming down after Tanjiro sang her a lullaby. Over time, she learned to control this transformation, entering her Advanced Demon Form while maintaining her composure and refraining from attacking or feeding on humans.

    • Sunlight Immunity:

During her battle with Hantengu, Nezuko unexpectedly developed immunity to sunlight, allowing her to remain active regardless of exposure to daylight.

    • Blood Control:

In her Advanced Demon Form, Nezuko has demonstrated the ability to control the viscosity of her own blood. During her fight with Daki, after having her limbs and head severed, she managed to solidify and congeal the blood spraying from her wounds to prevent the streams from dispersing. This allowed her to control her severed limbs, using them to grab and stop Daki’s sashes with enough force to halt them completely. Nezuko then pulled her limbs back together through these blood streams, facilitating rapid regeneration.

    • Immense Regeneration:

As a demon, Nezuko possesses enhanced regenerative abilities that allow her to heal almost instantly. Initially, her regeneration was relatively slow, requiring a few moments to recover from injuries. However, in her awakened state, her regenerative power evolved to match that of the Upper Ranks of the Twelve Kizuki. She became capable of reconnecting her torso and limbs, as well as regrowing her arms and legs in an instant. This rapid healing was so advanced that even Daki remarked on Nezuko’s regeneration surpassing her own.

    • Size Alteration:

Upon being transformed into a demon, Nezuko displayed the basic ability to change and alter her body’s size and height. She was able to shrink herself into the physical size of a small child in order to fit inside a small box or a basket, and she could also enlarge herself into a much bigger form.

      • Immense Strength:

As a demon, Nezuko possesses naturally enhanced physical strength. Shortly after her transformation and with minimal rest, she was able to decapitate the Temple Demon with a single kick. She has demonstrated enough power to punch the Swamp Demon so forcefully that it caused him to cough up blood, easily overwhelming him with a barrage of punches and kicks. With no formal combat training, Nezuko relies on her brute strength, using her legs as her primary weapon for delivering fast and powerful kicks. She has shown the ability to adapt and increase her strength in critical situations, such as reinforcing her legs to kick back Susamaru’s handballs, even after her legs were previously torn off by them.

In her Advanced Demon Form, Nezuko’s strength reaches new heights, allowing her to pierce through Daki’s durable body with a single kick and hold down Daki’s obi using only her limbs. These obi were previously shown to cause massive destruction across a city. During her battle with Upper Rank Four, Hantengu, Nezuko fought his clones on equal footing, managing to partially sever Karaku’s head with a kick, grapple with Aizetsu, and leap high enough into the air to save Tanjiro Kamado from Zohakuten’s giant dragons.

        Game Exclusive Techniques

        • Skilled Hand-to-hand Combat:

Despite having no formal combat training before her transformation, Nezuko has become a highly skilled hand-to-hand fighter. Her fighting style primarily revolves around using her enhanced leg strength to deliver powerful and devastating kicks, combined with her sharp nails for additional offensive capability. This natural combat proficiency emerged after she became a demon, allowing her to adapt quickly in various battles. Since her transformation, Nezuko has been a key contributor to Tanjiro’s fights, frequently stepping in to assist when he is overpowered by stronger opponents. Her instinctive fighting abilities and unwavering determination have made her an invaluable ally in their encounters with demons.

        • Blood Demon Art

Combustible Blood:Nezuko’s Blood Demon Art enables her to ignite her blood into pink flames at will. These flames possess a unique property that makes them harmful exclusively to demons, their possessions, and their Blood Demon Arts, while remaining harmless to humans and other objects. Her flames can hinder a demon’s regeneration, as seen when Daki’s burns took significantly longer to heal than typical injuries. Additionally, Nezuko’s Blood Demon Art was capable of neutralizing Gyutaro’s poison, thereby saving Inosuke Hashibira and Tengen Uzui from death. Her flames can also temporarily turn Nichirin Swords bright red, enhancing the power of attacks delivered with them. However, a drawback of this ability is that excessive use can cause Nezuko to fall asleep.

          Fighting Style

          • Heel Bash (かかと落おとし Kakato Otoshi)— Nezuko flips into the air and uses the momentum to deliver a powerful downward axe kick. The force of this kick is strong enough to create a small crater in the ground upon impact.

          • Exploding Blood Heel Bash (爆血かかと落とし, Bakketsu Kakato Otoshi):— This is an enhanced version of Nezuko’s Heel Bash. In this move, she seemingly “teleports” into the air and delivers a powerful downward axe kick. Upon impact, it generates a surge of crimson-pink flames that erupt from the point of contact with the terrain.

          • Crazy Scratching (乱みだれ裂ざき Midarezaki)— Nezuko unleashes a flurry of overlapping slashes using her nails, which are coated in the crimson-pink flames of her Blood Demon Art. The attack culminates in a larger X-shaped slash executed with both arms.

          • Flying Kick (飛とびかかり蹴げり Tobikakari Geri)— Nezuko leaps into the air and swiftly dashes toward her enemy. As she approaches, she performs a backflip, using the gained momentum to deliver a powerful kick that sends her opponent high into the air.

          • Nails of Fury (切きり裂さく爪つめ Kirisaku Tsume)— Nezuko executes a powerful uppercut slash with her nails, leaving trails of pink flames in its wake.

          • Exploding Blood Strike (爆ばっ血けつ突づき Bakketsu Tsuki?)— Nezuko lunges forward and delivers a knife-hand thrust, leaving a trail of pink flames in its path.

          • Drop Kick (蹴げりおろし Keri Oroshi)— Nezuko dashes forward at blinding speed, appearing to teleport, and delivers a powerful drop kick with one leg.

          • Spin Kick (廻まわし蹴げり Mawashi Geri)— Nezuko charges forward and performs a lateral spinning vertical kick, slamming her opponent to the ground and creating a large explosion of crimson-pink flames upon impact.

          • Exploding Blood, Rupture (爆血・猛擊, Bakketsu – Mōgeki):— Nezuko performs a drop kick, dragging the opponent before unleashing fiery scratches. She finishes with a powerful axe kick, engulfing the area in crimson-pink flames.
