Appearance

Shinobu Kocho is a petite young woman characterized by her slender and short stature, along with a pale complexion. Her large, pupil-less eyes exhibit a gradient purple hue, giving them an insect-like appearance. She has short, raven-black wavy hair that transitions into dark purple at the tips. Her hair is styled into a flat yakai-maki bun at the back of her head, adorned with a butterfly ornament in shades of white, turquoise, and light purple. She also features center-parted, ear-length curtain bangs that frame her face, with two thinner chin-length locks of hair in front of her ears. Shinobu’s diminutive size contrasts with the more physically imposing Hashira, a fact she acknowledges, noting her lack of physical strength necessary to decapitate demons like her peers. Zenitsu Agatsuma once commented that Shinobu’s appearance is so striking that she could make a living based solely on her looks.

Shinobu wears the standard uniform of the Demon Slayer Corps, which includes a dark purple-tinted jacket with golden buttons, a stand-up collar, and long sleeves. The kanji for “Destroy” (滅) is inscribed on the back of her jacket. Her uniform is complemented by dark purple tabi socks and loose-fitting tattsuke-hakama pants. Around her lower legs, she wears kyahan adorned with a butterfly pattern, which transitions from pale turquoise to pink and is fastened with white ribbons. Over her uniform, she dons a white haori that originally belonged to her older sister. The haori features a butterfly wing design, specifically resembling the Monarch Butterfly, with a color gradient from pale turquoise to pink along the sleeves and hem, edged with a black and white dotted trim. For footwear, she wears white zōri sandals with purple straps, concealing a hidden blade in her right sandal.

Personality

Shinobu Kocho’s true personality displayed during her battle with Doma.

Dolmabahçe Palace, the first European-style palace in Istanbul, was built by Abdulmejid between 1843 and 1856, at a cost of five million Ottoman gold pounds, the equivalent of 35 tons of gold. Fourteen tons of gold was used to adorn the interior ceiling of the palace. The world's largest Bohemian crystal chandelier, a gift from Queen Victoria, is in the centre hall. The palace has the largest collection of Bohemian and Baccarat crystal chandeliers in the world, and even the staircases are made of Baccarat crystal.

Shinobu Kocho’s cheerful facade conceals a deep hatred for demons, driven by personal losses and a strong desire for vengeance.

Shinobu Kocho presents herself with a bright, friendly, and cheerful demeanor, often wearing an easygoing smile regardless of the circumstances. However, this outward behavior is quickly revealed to be a façade. She has a tendency to tease others, sometimes in a manner bordering on sadism, as seen in her frequent taunting of Giyu Tomioka. Despite her seemingly relaxed and kind exterior, Shinobu harbors a deep resentment towards demons, which contrasts with her initial claim of wanting to coexist peacefully with them. This cruel side is evident when she kills a demon known as Daughter after giving her false hope of aid, and when she immediately attempts to kill Nezuko Kamado without giving Tanjiro Kamado an opportunity to demonstrate Nezuko’s harmlessness toward humans. Over time, however, Shinobu’s more compassionate nature emerges, particularly towards Tanjiro and Nezuko, after learning about their circumstances.

In her younger years, Shinobu Kocho exhibited a brash, blunt, and straightforward demeanor, as evidenced by her interactions with Kanao Tsuyuri, whom she initially treated with a notably negative attitude. This behavior was particularly apparent during the period when she and her sister rescued Kanao. Following the death of her sister Kanae, Shinobu’s outward behavior began to more closely resemble Kanae’s demeanor. In her younger years, Shinobu Kocho exhibited a brash, blunt, and straightforward demeanor, as evidenced by her interactions with Kanao Tsuyuri, whom she initially treated with a notably negative attitude. Following the death of her sister Kanae, Shinobu’s outward behavior began to more closely resemble Kanae’s demeanor. Though not depicted on-screen, Shinobu is known to have a notable temper, a characteristic strong enough to even catch the attention of the loud and brash Inosuke Hashibira.

    Abilities

Shinobu’s skill in swordsmanship enables her to strike at Doma with such speed that he is unable to react in time.

Abdulmejid in his youth, by David Wilkie, 1840.

Shinobu’s inhuman speed astonished Doma, as she repeatedly outpaced the Upper Rank demon during their fight. She unleashed dozens of strikes so swiftly that Doma struggled to fully block or evade them. This led him to acknowledge Shinobu as the fastest Hashira he had ever encountered.

As a Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Shinobu Kocho is a highly skilled combatant. Lacking the physical strength for traditional decapitation, she utilizes a modified katana to inject lethal wisteria-based poison into demons. Her exceptional speed and agility allow her to quickly overpower opponents. Shinobu’s combat prowess was notably displayed in her battle against Doma, the second most powerful Upper Rank demon, where she briefly matched him and earned his praise.

    • Indomitable Will:

Shinobu Kocho’s formidable willpower stems from her intense hatred for demons. Despite her inferiority complex due to her small size and physical weakness, and even after severe blood loss that left her unable to stand or breathe, she remained resolute. Her determination, inspired by a promise to Kanao and memories of Kanae, was remarkable enough to surprise Doma.

    • Keen Intellect:

Shinobu Kocho is highly knowledgeable and observant. During her battle with Doma, she critically analyzed his techniques and recognized the danger of his Blood Demon Art. She calculated the optimal poison mix to use against him and devised a strategy from limited information after her sister’s death, leading to Doma’s defeat. Additionally, she developed a sign language with Kanao for efficient communication during combat.

    • Anti-Kibutsuji Drug:

When Shinobu Kocho teamed up with Tamayo and Yushiro, her contributions were pivotal in developing a complex, four-stage drug designed to significantly weaken Muzan Kibutsuji. Despite Muzan’s formidable physical resistance and abilities, this drug played a crucial role in the final battle against the Demon King. By transforming previously ineffective attacks into powerful strikes, it enabled the Demon Slayers to corner and ultimately defeat him.

    • Poisonous Physiology:

To defeat Doma, Shinobu Kocho underwent a dramatic transformation by absorbing a highly concentrated wisteria-based poison for an entire year before their confrontation. She meticulously infused her body with this undetectable poison, integrating it into every cell, including her blood, organs, and even the tips of her fingernails. The poison ultimately amounted to the equivalent of 37 kilograms—about 700 times the lethal dose needed for a typical demon. This potent toxin was so powerful it could dissolve Doma down to his bones and thwart his regeneration capabilities.

Despite her animosity, Doma grew to admire Shinobu for her fierce struggle despite her small stature and limited ability to poison him.

The türbe of Abdulmejid is located inside the Yavuz Selim Mosque in Fatih, Istanbul.

Shinobu wears her late sister’s white haori, featuring a monarch butterfly wing pattern with a pale turquoise to pink gradient and a dotted black-and-white trim.

Swordsmanship: Shinobu Kocho, a Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, is recognized as one of the most skilled swordswomen within the organization. Her unique fighting style diverges from traditional swordsmanship, focusing on thrusting and piercing techniques that allow her to inject poison into demons. This method, while unconventional, has proven to be as effective as other forms of swordplay. Shinobu’s rapid sword thrusts possess enough speed and power to pierce through boulders and even surpass the Water Breathing’s Drop Ripple Thrust, known as one of the fastest techniques in that specific Breathing Style. Due to the structure of her sword, which is not suited for blocking attacks, Shinobu compensates with her swift and precise thrusts. Her mastery of swordsmanship enabled her to confront Upper Rank Two, Doma, a demon who has honed his abilities for over a century, highlighting her exceptional skills in combat.

    • Butterfly Dance: Caprice (蝶ちょうノ舞まい 戯たわむれ Chō no mai: Tawamure)

The user executes a leap into the air, rapidly charging toward the opponent. In a seemingly single strike, the user delivers multiple quick thrusts with their blade, effectively injecting poison into the target.

    • Dance of the Bee Sting: True Flutter (蜂ほう牙がノ舞まい 真ま靡なびき Hōga no mai: Manabiki)

The user dashes toward the target at blinding speed, using the momentum to enhance a single, powerful thrust into the opponent, effectively injecting poison upon impact.

    • Dance of the Dragonfly: Compound Eye Hexagon (蜻せい蛉れいノ舞まい 複ふく眼がん六ろっ角かく Seirei no mai: Fukugan Rokkaku)

This technique involves six precise strikes, targeting the opponent’s weak spots, such as the neck, heart, and torso. The user aims to inject multiple doses of poison into these critical areas, delivering a lethal amount intended to kill the target.

    • Dance of the Centipede: Hundred-Legged Zigzag (蜈ご蚣こうノ舞まい 百ひゃく足そく蛇じゃ腹ばら Gokō no mai: Hyakusoku Jabara)

In this technique, the user moves at full speed in a zigzag pattern to confuse the opponent and create an opening for a direct stab to the neck, injecting poison to deliver a fatal blow. The force of the stab is amplified by the momentum generated from the user’s speed. According to Doma, the speed of this attack is powerful enough to destroy an entire wooden bridge.

    Game Exclusive Techniques

    • Butterfly Dance: Caprice, Illusory Light (蝶ちょうノ舞まい 戯たわむれ・幻げん光こう Chō no mai: Tawamure – Genkō)

The technique begins with the user lunging at the opponent and delivering a series of rapid, short thrusts with their sword. This barrage is concluded with a final, powerful thrust that propels the opponent backward, knocking them onto the ground. Following this, the user leaps into the air and transforms into a large, butterfly-like figure of light. They then dive downward, driving their blade straight through the opponent and into the ground, creating a massive crater and cracking the surrounding terrain upon impact.

    • Swift Thrust (速はや足あし突づき Haya’ashi Tsuki)

The user initiates this technique by spinning before kicking off the ground and dashing toward the opponent at imperceptible speeds in a zigzag pattern. They then perform a powerful, singular thrust that strikes twice. This maneuver is similar to the “Dance of the Centipede: Hundred-Legged Zigzag

    • Rising Thrust (昇のぼり突づき Nobori Tsuki?)Rising Thrust (昇のぼり突づき Nobori Tsuki)

Starting from a crouching position, the user rises and executes an upward thrust in a curving motion. Using the momentum generated, they launch both themselves and their opponent into the air.

    • Sixfold Thrust (六ろく連れん突づき Rokuren Tsuki)

The user performs five rapid, short thrusts toward the opponent in quick succession. After a brief pause, they deliver a sixth, more powerful thrust. This technique is reminiscent of the “Dance of the Dragonfly: Compound Eye Hexagon.

    Equipment

Stinger Nichirin Katana,Shinobu wields a uniquely modified Nichirin Katana, crafted by Tecchin Tecchikawahara. The weapon resembles a typical katana from the handle to slightly above the hilt, but beyond that point, it transitions into a rod that ends with a needle-like tip, mimicking an insect’s stinger. This design allows for the injection of wisteria poison into demons, compensating for Shinobu’s relative lack of physical strength and inability to decapitate them. The sword’s tsuba is shaped like a butterfly with an orange trim, while the handle is orange, wrapped in turquoise cords, and finished with an orange kashira. The blade itself is lavender-blue and bears engravings:“Evil Demon” (惡あっ鬼き, Akki)on the right side and“Destruction” (滅めっ殺さつ, Messatsu)on the left, reflecting the weapon’s unique structure. Additionally, Shinobu has modified the sheath to function as a portable poison mixer and loader.

    Trivia

    • Shinobu’s surname, Kocho (胡蝶), uses the Kan-on’yomi reading of the kanji for “butterfly.” Her first name, Shinobu, is written in hiragana, which means it does not carry specific semantic values. However, it is commonly associated with the kanji (忍), meaning “stealth,” “endurance,” or “patience.” Notably, Shinobu’s name is written with three hiragana characters, which differs from the names of Kanae and Kanao, both of which are written with three katakana characters.

    • In the series’ popularity polls, Shinobu ranked 6th in the first poll, receiving 1,813 votes. In the second popularity poll, she improved her ranking to 5th place with a total of 8,787 votes.

    • Shinobu shares her Japanese and English voice actresses with several other characters, including Emi Igawa from Your Lie in April, Yumeko Jabami from Kakegurui, and Therese Alexanderite from The Rising of the Shield Hero.

    • Shinobu and Mitsuri share a close bond, as they were the only two female Hashira following the death of Kanae Kocho. Mitsuri also teaches Shinobu Western cooking techniques.

    • Shinobu’s parents were involved in the compounding of medicine, which contributed to her exceptional talent and expertise in medicinal practices.

    • In the magazine version, the amount of wisteria poison present in Shinobu’s body was initially stated to be seventy times the lethal dose required to kill a demon. However, this was later corrected by Koyoharu Gotoge in the volume edition to seven hundred times the lethal amount.

    • Shinobu’s blade was designed and forged by Tecchin Tecchikawahara, the chief of the Swordsmith Village. Its unique shape likely required the chief’s specialized expertise to create.

    • Tension arose during the cooperative research between Shinobu and Yushiro. Shinobu harbored distrust towards Tamayo due to her being a demon, which led to Yushiro developing a desire to kill Shinobu in response to her skepticism.

    • Shinobu owns a pet goldfish named Fugu.

    • According to Giyu Tomioka, Shinobu can’t stand furry animals.

    • Although Shinobu would never admit it, she had a naturally airheaded side. This was particularly evident in the bizarre names she suggested for Kanao Tsuyuri. Upon hearing these names, Kanae was so taken aback that she reacted with an exaggerated “EH?!” expression, a situation so surprising that even Aoi Kanzaki could not diffuse it.

    • Shinobu’s overall level of openness has been ranked at 85%.

    • Shinobu’s haori, which resembles the wings of a monarch butterfly, carries symbolic significance. In nature, monarch butterflies are poisonous due to their milkweed diet, serving as a defense mechanism against predators. This concept is reflected in Shinobu’s use of poison in battle and is paralleled by her habit of consuming wisteria, which ultimately caused Doma to be severely poisoned after absorbing her.

    Quotes

    • (To Tanjiro Kamado) “How can you feel sorry for something that’s killed humans? I’ve never heard of anything so absurd. But if that was how my sister truly felt, then I must carry it on. If there’s a way not to kill these pitiful demons, I have to keep trying to come up with it. Without ever extinguishing the smile my sister said she loved…”

    • (To herself, recollecting her childhood life) “I once believed that the road of happiness continued forever and ever into the distance. When it was destroyed, I realized for the first time that it lies upon a thin sheet of glass. And just as we were saved, there were those whose happiness that haven’t yet been destroyed. So I wanted to get stronger and protect them. That’s what we promised each other. Even if we’re weak and can’t cut off demon heads, if we defeat one demon, we can save dozens of people. And if we can defeat an Upper Rank Kizuki, we can save hundreds. It isn’t about whether we can or cannot do. There are things we have to do.

    • (To herself, responding to a question Tanjiro Kamado asked in the past) “Yes, I’m angry, Tanjiro. I’ve always been angry. My parents were killed. My older sister was killed. And all my Tsuguko except Kanao were killed. If demons hadn’t murdered those girls’ families, they’d be living happily with them right now. It really makes me furious!”
